Here's What Liquid Metal Did To A PS4 Pro After 3 Years

  • Just over three years ago I changed out the thermal compound inside the PS4 Pro for liquid metal, which is what Sony used for the PS5. Today I wanted to open it back up and see how the liquid metal is holding up years later.

To clean "dried out" LM you apply a fresh drop of LM and that will liquify it again. Allowing you to remove it easily with cotton, If you use Alcohol it makes a reaction and the LM goes black.

I was here when you originally made the video putting LM in this. I'm pretty sure the copper reacted with the LM, it looks corroded and also like it caused a small reaction and started to fuse the metals. I wouldn't use LM in anything not designed for it, alot of people got excited to start changing their existing TIM when Sony started using LM. LM is not designed for the average user in anyway, and I knew when Sony started using it it would start some ridiculous craze where people ruin their tech. Here we are, luckily he caught this before it got worse...Big mistake and anyone that said they were doing it I would make sure to expressly state it is...

Bro, just because you say it's bad doesn't mean it is. Recommended, no. But if you watched that video and decided to go the same route your not just some novice at taking things apart. I did it on my ps4 pro and it works just fine. I coated the outside of the apu with clear nail polish just in case there was any leakage. Look, I get that there's a chance you can mess it up, but if done correctly it can have a great effect at keeping the chip cool.

Also always use the screw that came from that hole. Even if its 10 identical screws. Put the same ones back from where they came from. But yeah, slightly backwards till you hear, feel it getting into its original thread and then put it in. Also always put in your screws in an X fashion. Don't start going round. Put one in top left, then bottom right. Top right, bottom left and so on. Tighten them a bit but not fully. Then go in the same X, alternation pattern again when tighening them down propperly secure. This goes from putting screws in a playstation to bolts when changing a wheel on your car.

As a materials scientist, I would like everyone to understand that the liquid metal did not "dry out" in the usual sense. It reacted with the metal of the heat sink (primarily, from the look of it. The surface of the chip looks basically ok) and what you see on the chip is a residual solid metal of a new composition. It will not be possible to remove the reacted material from the heat sink, as this is incorporated into the heat sink and is in fact an alloy of the heat sink metal and the liquid metal. It may still be possible to use another type of thermal paste to bridge the air gap. This should not be a problem with the PS5 system as it was designed with compatible materials or coatings to enable the use of a liquid metal for thermal contact.
One concern would be that as this reaction takes place the thermal contact should/could have been greatly reduced. It is a good thing that this PS4 wasn't used that much.

Silly question then - so I should not panic that my de-lidded Intel processor may be “dried out” underneath the IHS?

    • @EvanOfTheDarkness

@@FasuloA Most quality heatsinks are nickel plated, and that should protect the copper from reacting (alloying) with the liquid metal.

    • @infopackrat

So many games have been delayed that games that started development with the ps4/Xbox one in mind are coming out this year, and they’re gonna be on the old and new consoles. It might not be as good on the ps4, but if you want to play some of these games this is probably the easiest way right now. I purchased a used PS4 Pro around December of 2020 for around $320 (ik that's too much but the PS5 costs around $700 where I live).
It's the CUH - 7016b model (stock HDD) and it still works fine. No performance issues, the fan is somewhat quiet and manageable. Ocassionally it's spins up and gets annoyingly loud lol.
Playing early life cycle/previous gen games like Infamous Second Son, UC4, Lost Legacy: the fan doesn't even spin up. Stays at the same speed that it would when your on the homescreen.
Playing mid life cycle games like Horizon Zero Dawn, it gets a little loud but I practically can't hear it due to my TV.
Only a select few late life cycle games stress it's hardware and spin up the fans really loud. Marvel's Spider-Man is an example.
But it's good enough for me and I'll continue using it this year, with games like HFW, GT7, GOW and many 3rd party titles, I'm gonna hold off on getting the PS5 till 2023. Not really interested in a next gen console due to the price and availability.
Edit: sorry if this is too long, you don't have to read it.

In January 2022 my PS4 Pro was immediately in airplane mode (fan at full speed) when I loaded in my save game from Horizon Zero Dawn. I knew my cooling was compromised because normaly it stayed two sound levels lower (stock paste is only one level lower). Disassembled my Playstation 4 Pro and it looked just like yours: dry. It won’t be a problem. Metal can’t “dry”. What you see happening is amalgamation. Just search UA-cam for gallium and aluminum reaction. The primary component in liquid metal thermal paste is gallium, gallium is highly reactive with some metals. It will turn aluminum into dust in a few hours, reacts slowly with bare copper, and won’t react with nickel plating. After a few years the gallium literally seeped into the bare copper and formed a new alloy, thus appearing “dried out”. This won’t happen with nickel plated heat sinks.

and people say liquid metal doesn't dry up I actually used it on my PC for a year then noticed my temps were no longer OK and when I tried to pry off my WaterBlock it was like it's glued to the processor almost damaged it too when trying to force it out it took the processor right out the socket along with it almost fainted after that good thing my 2600X did not loose any pins. I had to put a hammer to my screwdriver in order to get the processor off my Corsair H100i water block and had to use sandpaper to make the block and CPU heat spreader flat again I ended up lapping the processor and the block. I sure ain't buying thermal grizzly anymore because of this.

  • @youjean83
    @youjean83 2 роки тому

Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to clarify. When you first apply liquid metal, then you WANT it to actually react with the copper plate!
When liquid metal reacts with copper, it creates a layer with conducts heat much more efficiently.
When the liquid metal reacts with the copper plate, it seems to “dry-out”. This is because the liquid metal “soaks” into the copper plate.
This layer (coating) is what people often describe as the STAIN. Do not remove it. Do not sandpaper it!
This is why you should re-apply the liquid metal 3 times every 2-3 month in the beginning.
After this period, the coating should fully be formed, providing the most heat conductivity possible.
From here on, if there is Gallium in your copper/heat sink/liquid metal, you can re-paste the liquid metal every 1/2 years.
If there is no Gallium involved, then you won't ever need to re-paste the liquid metal again. I hope this helps.

Had I known what I know now I would not have sold my ps4. I have had a lot of issues with PS4 games on PS5. Sony has done a crappy job with their backwards compatability. One thing you should know is PS5 was designed to use liquid metal the PS4 was not so the heat sink materials are probably different. I think it would be a good idea to check the liquid metal every 2 years to see if it had dried out and replace as necessary. That is a good idea even if your system has thermal paste.
