connors my favorite character because of how long it took him to become a deviant. Everyone else had no trouble yet he was so troubled, mostly BECAUSE he was afraid to turn deviant and he never recognised that he was the entire time and i love that the story does that. Also connor and hanks father son dynamic is just to adorable for words
I wouldnt really say that is the case. . You must not forget that Connor is an incredibly advanced Android. He is installed with a Social Relations program, wich in a nutshell means his a walking shrink . He has a very good understanding of the human mind, charachter traits, habits and flaws of personality and he will adapt his own personality, approach to a situation in order to accomplish his mission. He is after all deployed to resolve a hostage situation, task with dealing with a highly emotional unstable human/android. He becomes deviant, when he is faced to either accomplish his mission or ignore it, that is his entire reason for existence.
Dunno what 'theundertaker' user was talking about - Connor was afraid of deviancy because he knew he would get "killed" for it (see Kamski test for example) so him feeling that shows how he was already deviating. Even better, he has likes near the beginning too - "I like dogs" - the interesting thing with Connor (why he's my favourite) is because he was built to be deviant until Amanda no longer needed him to be.
Kate Anderson I agree with everything you said, but I don't think he was "afraid" to go deviant. I think he was on a neutral balance between "deviant" and "machine." He's a tough guy who looks to know what he's doing, but in reality, he's constantly struggling towards who he wants to be, and whichever he becomes in the end is the route he goes. Same thing with Markus. He is the leader of Jericho who also has a "tough guy" exterior with a hint of confidence that makes him seem he knows what he's doing, but he has difficulty deciding on what kind of leader he wishes to be and depending on his pick, will either allow him and his people to rise and succeed or fall and falter. But Connor's is the most powerful to me, because it takes him a while to adapt to his emotions, he goes from cold, stern and calculating to becoming "more human" slowly throughout the whole game. The other two character's transitioned too fast for me, Markus is my favorite but not his story, it would've been my favorite had he had more slower characterization like Connor, Kara is mostly centered around Alice, I felt she didn't really have much of a personality or free will besides "protect the child as the caretaker android you are." Connor is the most human of the three and you can certainly thank Hank for helping him on his journey to discover who he was as a person. His was a true "Coming-of-Age" story. The other two were more like "Let's look back at these other two characters and see what they're up to, then we'll go back to the fully fleshed-out one" to me. We see only glimpses of their story, which is only like little chunks in comparison to Connor's.
There's no fear - it's Connor posing more questions against deviancy than Markus or Kara due to being a more advanced model. He is more resistant by default as evidenced multiple times during the game. If you do not choose during certain choice-moments, Connor always defaults to the 'machine' decision. He was not afraid at all. Connor's choice is simply the more significant of the three, plus he can choose to ignore it and remain a machine despite it. As a more advanced model than the rest, even with instability he can choose to remain a machine. Without instability you won't even get the choice to become deviant. All three android journey's represent one story -- Markus the revolutionary, setting the stage for all other androids. The androids in general, with Kara serving as an example of the JoeSoap droid who has to live within the world Markus will invariably strive for. And Connor, the corporate face who can choose to stick to the job and oppose the uprising, or throw away those chains and be his own man(droid). Back to the topic of 'fear', Connor acting strange is coming to terms with the fact that he is so hell bent on accomplishing his mission, yet he clearly realizes he is just as capable of becoming 'like them' (the androids he's been sent to capture). All main-star androids also have one human character in their journey to represent the lighter side of humanity - Rose, Carl and Hank. Hank is all for the revolution, hence he warms to you the more you show signs of deviancy. You show humanity - empathy, compassion etc, not just some machine going off a rational checklist of logical instructions -- all while Hank comes to terms with his own past hatred, realizing it was misplaced. That isn't fear you're seeing. It's Connor's conflict with his own programming. Instructions vs personal decision. He 'should' just be doing whatever is necessary (the requirement of Machine Connor).
i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs i like dogs *WHAT'S YOUR DOG'S NAME*
hank has a dog that doesn't attack intruders that literally break his windows. he sees his owner getting slapped so hard by the intruder and still did nothing
I actually love that about Sumo. The majority of real dogs would act exactly as Sumo in that situation because they rarely feel threatened. That scene feels weirdly real to me. It's exactly as those youtube videos where dog owners try to see if their pet will go crazy if they faint or get attacked and the dog doesn't give a shit XD
Dunno if people notice noticed, but if you replay the game from scratch, you can notice how Connor's body language goes from robotic to human as you near the end of the game. In the first mission Connor acts extremely stiff and still, like a real robot awaiting orders (this can really be seen in the "Partners" mission). As you get closer to the end, you notice Connor acting more and more human: a shift in his stance, a tilt of his head, eyes flicking around, etc. Finally, in the last mission (Last Chance Connor), Connor acts *exactly* like a human, he just hops a little and sits on Hank's table (and don't even get me started on his emotional and frustrated response). I think the most prominent display of Connor's growth are his two meetings with Fowler. In the first one, Connor's responses usually consist of some standardised relations protocol bullcrap ("Well then, I won't keep you any longer" or "I am glad to be working with you" etc). In the second meeting, Connor just...blinks and nods his head in a silent apology and leaves. I thought this was a really nice touch :)
Yeah and you can ever see him at certain points react to his own emotions and reactions through his expressions and body language, like when he saves Hank on the roof he looks so confused at why he put Hank over the mission only to immediately straighten his posture and put on a blank expression the second Hank turns around before saying "Nothin'." Like you can see little gestures and expressions that shows him noticing the change in tense situations and trying to correct himself. His growth is subtle in some aspects but mostly obvious if you actually look and he becomes so human and adopts human behaviour but much more naturally than he would simply mimicking it. Especially Hank's mannerisms. Hell, just compare him and the other Connor you face in Cyberlife Tower. That dude is way more robotic and artifical, using his software compared to the real Connor's genuine movements and ticks.
I noticed that too! Even before he officially deviates, you can definitely see a difference in behavior. By the time you get to that CyberLife mission with the other Connor, I thought it was pretty easy to tell which was the real Connor just because poor Connor looked genuinely horrified by the situation. The other one had simulated emotions but you could tell the difference between the faked unease and the truly freaked out one. Desperation really starts to drive his actions. Bryan did a lot of awesome work with Connor, I'm so glad they cast him because the game wouldn't be the same without him. I also kind of like that even in the bar, dumping Hank's drink is considered the "machine" option, but when Hank finally leaves, I love the smirk and little shoulder shrug Connor has when he straightens his tie and follows Hank. Genuine, who knows? But Hank sure wasn't there to see it, so it seems more like it was just a spontaneous smug moment. There's a lot to notice and I love that!
Yeah! Although throughout the fight I lost track of who was the real Connor, when they split apart and Hank threatened them, I *instantly* knew who was the real one because of how genuinely scared he seemed! I saw a theory whereby Connor was actually designed to be deviant all along. The justifications were these: 1. Why would an android pick up a hobby (coin tricks) that is unrelated to his purpose/function in the first place? 2. If you remain deviant to the end, Amanda says that Connor going deviant was "planned from the very beginning" 3. If you let clone Connor kill real Connor in the Cyberlife tower, and Hank is also shot, the androids get turned anyway. When this happens, the clone Connor looks at them in panic, turning around and muttering to himself in denial and even hysterically screaming "NO!!", almost as if in...fear of getting deactivated from his failure. Fear is a human emotion ;) Furthermore, there was no one around that needed clone Connor to simulate these emotions as a mask...that means that he actually genuinely felt fear. Perhaps that might even justify the devious little smirk when he spilt Hank's drink (I never noticed that!)
Holy SHIT, I didn't know about the fear of heights one! I went to search it up and depending on whether Connor fell in Hostage, he either reacts normally or startles when he gets close to the edge. That's crazy! How much detail did the developers put in this game?!
I like the touch where if Connor pulls the trigger on Chloe, the other Chloe’s act as if this is normal. They don’t mind. But if Connor doesn’t kill her, the other Chloe’s act uncomfortable.
Because they know Connor is a deviant at this point, he was ordered to kill the Chloe and he simply didn't follow that order. Androids are made to strictly follow orders and that's it.
Detroit: Connor Become Conner: Detroit Human Human: Detroit Connor Connor: Become Connor My name is Detroit, I'm the Cyberlife sent by Connor My name is Android, I'm the Conner sent by human My name is Cyberlife, I'm the Detroit sent by Human
It took me a while to realize that no, I don’t suck at the game, Connor is just. that. damned. BAD at small talk XD. Watching him struggle here is honestly kind of adorable-it’s almost like a baby deer taking its first steps.
aoitennyo I can relate. I've been like that for most of my life, worse toward the beginning and gradually better until I had small talk down to a science...pretty much. I don't especially enjoy small talk unless it leads to greater topics of discussion or a significant level of humor.
I always raged whenever I picked an option that said the equivalent of "friendly" or "compassionate", and then Connor would be like "I see that you have personal issues, Lieutenant. You should consult a professional" and I'm like NO CONNOR THAT'S NOT HOW YOU TALK TO PEOPLE
Angel Stars That's the only thing I didn't like about this game. I dislike when the choices would say to be "Understanding" or "Polite" and they ended up sounding more meaner or brash than intended. I remember when Connor's at Hank's house before going to the Eden Club, there was an option to be "understanding" towards him, and Connor shouts, "I suggest you get over your personal problems and stay focused on the mission!" That was NOT at all "understanding." I had the most trouble in this in Markus' story, even his "peaceful" answers sound kind of violent. I remember when he first joins Jericho and the androids there tell him why they're live there and how they ran away to stay with one another, there was an option to be "somber" and I thought it meant for Markus to feel sorry for these poor androids and feel pity for them, but I was certainly taken by surprise when instead of being somber about the androids' story, he instead reflects back on his OWN life with bitterness and says, "When I think about it, I too was a slave. Maybe I was just living for what my master wanted me to be. I wasn't my own person at all." Everyone in the room who was watching was like "What?! What is this dude talking about? Does he NOT remember that Carl was a kind and gentle human and that he treated him like a son, and let's not ALSO forget the fact that he was actually trying to leave Markus up to find his own destiny through painting, how did he feel like a slave with a good life such as his?" It makes no sense, it's like Markus doesn't think good humans exist even though he himself lived with one for a good amount of time before Carl's son messed up everything. I felt Telltale did the dialogue options better, where you're given a complete sentence and it's actually what the character says. In Quantum Dream games they tend to only have one word up there that doesn't even tell you how the tone will sound when the character says it. I messed up a lot in Heavy Rain because of this. It reminds me of the "Glass him" option from Wolf Among Us.
Angel Stars I think this could be explained by Connor’s uhhhh, inexplicably “buggy” social software, which you’d THINK would be more adept at handling people, seeing as his function is to blend in with and adapt to human culture....
The line "Cyberlifes last chance to save humanity is itself a deviant" is a real gut puncher for me. Idk maybe it's just the way Kamskii delivers that line
It hits so hard for me because throughout the whole game Connor has shown clear signs of deviancy and we've seen him evolve from a cold machine to something with a soul and emotions if you play him that way. Connor denies it throughout and neither him or Hank ever says it outright despite it being obvious, the closest thing we get is "how do I know you're no deviant?" from Hank. Kamski is cryptic and manipulating... but he's the first person to actually say it out loud. Connor IS a deviant. He was literally designed to be one. So regardless of what you end up choosing with Markus confronts you, Kamski is still right and he's the only one willing to outright say it after Connor denies it the entire game.
@@lilchaos9212 designed to be Deviants? What part of Kamski's speech or body language gave you that? If he was testing Connor, he should've been proud for him to have passed the ultimate test. Plus, what kind of man would have ones of naked eomen serving him would esnt thrm to be free agents?
They played it well. Deviant meant 2 different things to humans and androids. Humans meant deviant, evil, rebellious, brutal, chaotic. To robots, it meant free, demonized, oppressed, looked down upon. If you understand Deviant like how humans (as opposed to robots) do, it dles sound dark amd ominous.
Not gonna lie, I honestly cared less about Kara and Marcus's storylines. Something about the Cop Buddy story-trope and Connor's instability over time really struck home
Their stories weren't really developed to be as interesting. Marcus had the most important role but he was the least interesting story wise, but I guess its hard to fit stuff in a game like this
@@idek5 nah, they said in an interview they plan to hit different parts of your decision thinking and emotional parts in you with diff stories. Kara with a kid, a mother type of love that she would do anything for her little girl, or Markus with a sensitivr background that connects to the uprising against slavery on detroit. And Connor with Hank losing a son. All of these stories are interesting, its designed to affect you in various ways.
Also (if Simon got left behind) Connor tries to get his memories but Simon kills himself and Connor felt what Simon felt, as if he actually killed himself and the scene is just so heartbreaking and he’s so traumatized.
Actually no Connor doesn't have to go to roof. He can go to kitchen instead after noticing the Android chairs. If he goes to kitchen he'll faced with three identical Androids .But the diveant is on Connor"s left on end go for probe and he looses it. He takes out Connors heart pump whatever you want to call it. And pinns him with knife through his hand. Connor has to free his hands and get the pump back in his chest and then get down the hallway and stop that guy before he starts killing people.it's hard but it's possible you grab the first guy on the right which is a police officer with a gun she usually O on PS4. That makes him grab the gun and shoot the deviant so that he can't hurt anyone and then technically he is a deviant that he(Connor) can ask where Jericho is.also it's keeps him in OKay standing with Amanda so he doesn't get shut down and last chance Connor. Because technically he's doing his job and stopping divants.and as long as you got that and a confession from Carlos Ortiz's Android.. you're goo good to go. At some point Connor can optionally remember the Android said that the answer inside. He somehow realizes the t means inside the statue. You can also alternatively get aAndroid to tell you where Jericho is it usually involves using Marcus's voice or if you have the Tracy's you have to use one Tracy to fool the other .( So no Simon doesn't have to die.)
@@christyshultz6443Nobody says Simon has to die, though. Just that with Simon left behind, if you go to the roof and find him, and if Connor gets to him in time, Connor probes his memory and Simon kills himself with the gun on him. Connor is shocked, and he says something the lines of "I felt it dying... Like I was dying... I was scared..." And he seems traumatized by it

2:22 I always thought it was so cute how he said that. it was like an oblivious child, and tbh I expected hank to make fun of him but hE DIDN’T. what a good dad.
I think that when Connor is reading Simon's memory before his death is a moment with emotions too. He told "I felt like I was dying. I was scared...", but whoa wait, can androids be scared? Hmm~? No, it's a human emotion, after all.
1:30 I like how even Connor got spooked by his first time hearing heavy metal. Even androids have their moments where they're just like humans, even when they aren't deviant.
Connor: *hears random music* Connors mind: *i like this music* Connor: *goes up to hank* Connor: Do you listen to Knights of the Black Death?? Connor: It’s full of energy. Hank: You listen to Heavy Metal?? Connor: ..........
*Weeks later* Connor: I really need replace few of my parts. Seems like few of them are not working properly due to high volume of heavy metal I listened for week.
@@M17bully But he doesn't really show any fear there. He says it would be regrettable. But on the roof of the tower is another level. "I- I was connected to its memory... When it fired, I felt it die- like I was dying... I was scared."
In all interactions with Amanda, Connor never seemed to be affected by the environment. It's in his mind yes, but think, when it was raining, he walked with a closed umbrella to Amanda and then opened it. The last talking with Amanda, there's a blizzard and Connor is genuinely feeling cold. He's hugging himself for warmth and even in his voice you can hear shivers. It's a very keen way to show how Connor started to "feel."
7:34 i have never noticed the post its in Hank’s bathroom before ‘shaving or not’ ‘I’m not grumpy I just don’t like you’ ‘Keep smiling’ And the last i can’t read.....
I think that's his way of attempting at coping (in a healthy way) with his suicidal tendencies from his son's death other than doing the classic "when in doubt, drink the pain out"

Even better, he has likes near the beginning too - "I like dogs" - the interesting thing with Connor (why he's my favourite) is because he was built to be deviant until Amanda no longer needed him to be.
Agreed. His slow character arc is definitely one of the reasons why he's my favorite character.
I smile every single time Connor says “I like dogs! :D”

Finally, connor became human (in a way)
Kara good connor god
Yeah and you can ever see him at certain points react to his own emotions and reactions through his expressions and body language, like when he saves Hank on the roof he looks so confused at why he put Hank over the mission only to immediately straighten his posture and put on a blank expression the second Hank turns around before saying "Nothin'."
Like you can see little gestures and expressions that shows him noticing the change in tense situations and trying to correct himself.
Cheryl Chan I think all the credit has to go to Bryan, he is too good
I noticed that too!
The justifications were these:
1. Why would an android pick up a hobby (coin tricks) that is unrelated to his purpose/function in the first place?
2. If you remain deviant to the end, Amanda says that Connor going deviant was "planned from the very beginning"

Why do they do that?
Because they know Connor is a deviant at this point, he was ordered to kill the Chloe and he simply didn't follow that order. Androids are made to strictly follow orders and that's it.

It took me a while to realize that no, I don’t suck at the game, Connor is just. that. damned. BAD at small talk XD. Watching him struggle here is honestly kind of adorable-it’s almost like a baby deer taking its first steps.
aoitennyo if real life baby’s where like baby deers my good baby shoe prices will go up
aoitennyo
I can relate. I've been like that for most of my life, worse toward the beginning and gradually better until I had small talk down to a science...pretty much. I don't especially enjoy small talk unless it leads to greater topics of discussion or a significant level of humor.
I always raged whenever I picked an option that said the equivalent of "friendly" or "compassionate", and then Connor would be like
"I see that you have personal issues, Lieutenant. You should consult a professional"
and I'm like NO CONNOR THAT'S NOT HOW YOU TALK TO PEOPLE
Angel Stars That's the only thing I didn't like about this game.

Connor: OH SHI-
The line "Cyberlifes last chance to save humanity is itself a deviant" is a real gut puncher for me. Idk maybe it's just the way Kamskii delivers that line
Same, it's quite a powerful quote, I love hearing it, especially the first time
And the conviction on Connor's face as he says it- *chef's kiss* amazing

I feel you, it's the dad-bond.
All of these stories are interesting, its designed to affect you in various ways.
same! everytime i had to play as markus or kara i like wanted to skip it and only play as connor
I think its a matter of preference, but personally, I like Connor's storyline the most.
Also (if Simon got left behind) Connor tries to get his memories but Simon kills himself and Connor felt what Simon felt, as if he actually killed himself and the scene is just so heartbreaking and he’s so traumatized.
I was actually hoping someone would mention this. I don't know why but that scene broke my heart.
His face tho:
@@christyshultz6443Nobody says Simon has to die, though. Just that with Simon left behind, if you go to the roof and find him, and if Connor gets to him in time, Connor probes his memory and Simon kills himself with the gun on him. if kamksi left an escape propgram in all his androids, that means he purposely let androids become deviants
Kamski you absolute douchebag of a god
Chaotic Neutral at its best.
U. S. S. R. He wants to use androids to extend human life?

Notice how Markus looked at the camera. As if talking to the player.
He was looking at Connor
@@pinywood3077 They could've angled differently if showing Markus looking at Connor had been the only intention... It was probably no coincidence.

Me in my petsmart interview
Me: okay I am done with falling gor fictional characters.
