I personally think at least for Pogonomyrmex they cover their food with substrate because they don't want to get stuck in it while walking. Mine also seem to cover it so they can move the honey or sugar water into these little balls for easier access. 👍

Thanks! I believe ants cover the carbohydrate sources for several reasons. I don’t think it’s just one behavior in particular.

Thanks! We used sticky tack to hold the dish in place. We sometimes use it around tubes and nests when they don’t fit as snugly as we’d like.
