It has been brought to my attention that I made a mistake in the beginning of the video - I said that Jimmy was riding home on his scooter, when in actuality he was going to a local club (which I obviously went onto mention in the video)... Apologies about that guys! I completely missed that when I was editing the video. You'll have to forgive me on that one! 😆

Mod s in the 80 mid decade. After noticing a ace of sorts outside his scooter in a mall with his brother Tommy. As if they needed the gimmick. But I followed none the less. In actuality the shadow of Hollywood. But I comment here because jimmy is already a fk bellboy with his red vest. Either followed to close or I guess actual job. Just a funny note.

I had a parka that was actually used in Quadrophenia. I grew up and left my (birth/mothers) home and bought my own home. One day I went back and went looking for my jacket (it was in a box in the loft). I couldn't find it, so I asked my mother if she knew where the box with the jacket was, "Oh!, that.....I threw it in the rubbish ages ago". That was 25 years ago. I am still salty about to this very day!
Your comment here reminds me of something similar. My mother-in-law was part of Beatlemania. UK Beatlemania, and she knew things like where to hang around so they could spot George Harrison and John Lennon coming out of buildings.
She had signed pictures of the Fab Four from those days, as well. One day she found them missing, and when she asked where they were - of course, all of them had been tossed in the garbage during cleanup. They didn't know just how insanely huge the Beatles were going to be, then!
I was born in 68' and started going to the midnight movies with my older friends to see Zep The Song Remains, sometime around early 1981. In early 1983 when I was a Freshman in HS they added Quadrophenia and took out Kentucky Fried movie from the 4, and the very 1st weekend the zep rockers and the Quad mods brawled in the lot after, and they stopped the midnight movies at that theater altogether. That school year 82/83 is when rocknroll got ousted, and all the popular kids went new wave, rockabilly, mod, etc, and the fact that rock was on the skids at that time made it happen easier. The 70s bands were getting burnt, and the likes of half crap bands like quiet riot and ratt were not going to fill the void.

Actually, the film begins with Jimmy walking away from the cliff that he just sent Ace's scooter off of.
Yeah, I know - I just figured that it’d be hard to explain that in the beginning of the video. Plus for those that haven’t seen the film before, they may not understand without context :)

You needed to live this! As a Scootter boy at the time! Days I don't forget! Remember sitting in the abc cinema in Brighton watching quadraphenia. Thought at the time whys everyone looking at me? Maybe Roger Daltrey sitting next to me!! Never forgotten!

I live in New Zealand and in the 1970s i worked for a Film distribution company. In the film vault we had this movie in 1979 the year of release. I went to the premiere screening of it for free, as that was a perk for working with the company. I also had the film poster.
Good review. We were obsessed with Quadrophenia in '79 and into the 80's. We all had scooters, went on the runs, even had the occasionally fights with local rockers (who were into heavy metal rather than Rock and Roll in the early 80's). I sold my scooters a long time ago, but still collect and listen to soul and blues music to this day.
I grew up in the UK, and not far from Brighton, through this period.
It was all small fry being served as the main course, really.
Fun to look back on, though.
It MATTERED then if one was a mod or a rocker.

Thanks for this. Loved it. I grew up with The Damned and punk, and my American friends AC/DC in the background, so only really got Quadrophenia when I was older. Only discovered the genius of The Who when I was much older. You've captured what I wanted captured and confirmed. Semi-retired, I now work in The Broads eight months a year. I often tell people how visiting The Broads during the quiet, colder months is a little like Jimmy revisiting Brighton after all the summer excitement. Some get it, some don't, and The Broads in winter, to be fair, is never disappointing. But I hope you get my feeling, and the link I personally find. I get your commentary, thank you for taking the time to lay it out.

Great commentary on a very interesting movie @ZombieDoo, thanks, your video and explanation was very well done! Such an interesting cultural time in the UK, I remember the locations well from later years, and the deprivations people had to put up with in the post-war UK era (e.g. weekly baths at the public bathhouses) - it was a tough time for them.

Quadrophenia was recognised by film critic Danny Peary as a classic in his book, Cult Movies, vol. 2.
I remember when this came out. Some good British films were around then. Scum. The Long Good Friday for example. Surprised they never done a film based on the Skinhead books.
Scum and Quadrophenia came out within a month of each other in 1979 with Ray Winston in both. Didn’t think he was particularly good in Quadrophenia. Bit stilted. Much better in Scum.

I came across the movies Quadrophenia and Absolute Beginners in 1988. I was living in Germany and visited London and Brighton around that time but in the winter time so no one was out and about doing scootering there. I was a mod for about 7 years 1985-1992 when I finally put my Vespa in storage. I still have it today and love the mod music of the 60s and 80s. It takes a bit of dedication to be a mod so I consider myself an American mod but not all the time with the music and clothing. BTW, I crashed my scooter like the film but I fixed it up and rode again for the same price I bought the scooter for ironically. Long live the Who. The are like me in that they appreciate the mod movement but are not full on mods.

Great video, I just have one minor nitpick which doesn't take away at all from the video, but the audio is panned all the way to the left, I just want to suggest making sure the audio is centered for future videos. You made a very good video none the less.
Seeing Jim walking by the cliff with the sun shining on the sea behind him brings chills down my spine.

Nice video! Good editing. I would say this story is essentially a rite of passage theme, with the emphasis on disillusion. It reminds me quite a bit of John Updike's short story The Lucid Eye in Silver City, in terms of themes.

Very nice little video! Concise and compact, this was great. You have a perfect voice and accent for this kind of thing and I hope you do it more in the future. One thing I'd add (which isn't all too important - depending on with whom you're talking) is that the real beginning scene, as opposed to Jimmy riding the streets, is where he's overlooking the cliff face. It has been said a few times over the years by those who worked on the film (and I believe even Pete Townshend himself) that this is in fact the end of the movie - Jimmy didn't actually fall to his death but walked away to continue living his life. Thanks for making this!
P.S. If you've not watched this film on Blu-Ray, I highly recommend it.

1979 and 1978 saw the Mod revival. I wanted to be a part of it but was at school with no money to buy clothes. We did things like jump over the wall at lunchtime to go and buy Strange Town by the Jam on 45 with our lunch money. We went all over London looking for punk 45s , ended up in China Town at a hippy market because we wanted Transmission by Joy Division. Keith Moon had died and it felt right that Kenny Jones joined the Who but when I saw the terrible lp cover of the second lp Kenny was on ? I thought nah . Like the record now though , Face Dances was great . It’s Hard ? Was that the second one ? Keith meant everything to us and still does . We got kicked out of the cinema for being under age when The kids are alright film came out . The Who were like gods . There were some lovely girls around this time at school who were into mod stuff and I salute them
It was set in the 60s when there were plenty of jobs so his aganst about a dead mod scene would i imagine be forgotten because you move on.I remember as a teen in the 80s with no job,that was the first thing that bothered me.At least the star in this film didnt have that worry him.

They put a plaque on Quadrophenia Alley this weekend in Brighton. Jimmy was there but he looked a bit older.
I'm sure the first time I saw this (and I've seen it thousands of times)it didn't start with Jimmy walking back from the cliffs edge!? Or perhaps I was just too fkked up on blues to notice!??😂lol thanks for this..any new quadropheia stuff is good IMHO x

ive watched this film at least 20 times and now my daughters watch it regulary ,i was by no means a mod but was 16 in 79 and identify with so many things in it ,i
was whats become known as a "casual" at the time and loved smart clothing and modern soul music but the main thing i think was a hatred for authority and a desperate need to get away from reality be it drinking or recreational drugs ,the fighting with rockers was replicated for me by fighting with opposing football supporters every saturday and occasionally Mods strangely enough ,sadly ive grown up so will go wathch the film again 🤣
I loved this video, brought back lots of memories I was a mod in Liverpool in the early 80s still wear fred perry and levis now and I've still got a Harrington, i loved Quadrophinia saw it on the pictures loads if times great film and great music, thanks for the memories 🛵 🛵 🛵

What happened to Jimmy ?
As far as I know, it's likely that he abandons the mod lifestyle and moves onto live a more conventional, conformist adult existence in the end

@@JohnSmith-su3ze The opening scene is actually the end of the film. You see Jimmy looking over the edge and then walks away, presumably to go back to reality and live his life.
@@zombiedoo4080 The Who never abandon The Mods, nor I think would Jimmy. Do rockers have to be violent? Do Mods? When I think of the attack on Keith Moon by alleged skinheads were he sadly lost his chauffeur/ mate you see how social groups that may feel great for insiders can lead to pain- if you look sharp we can all mature

How do we know Jimmy had been to see a psychiatrist at the beginning of the film? Seen it a million times and never noticed this.
I love this movie, interesting video, dont see a lot of other people covering it. Only problem is its only playing in one ear and has imbalanced audio.

Seems Epstein changed their looks more modish in their early recording
days to better suit the audience, though some probably felt they sold out.
When they were the Quarrymen, it did seem that they dressed more like rockers. The Beatles in the early days though always looked more like mods to me…

@@tomodonovan5931 Look at the earliest pictures of them and they were dressed head-to-toe in black leather with Elvis hairstyles...The Beatles existed before Mod was even invented.

then mods? I watched Quadrophenia, and rockers wore all the leather, while
the mods wore more preppy type clothes. Rockers came before the mods
I would guess. The Beatles when younger were more rugged with Lennon
being the most aggressive. He and McCartney wore the pants in the beginning
of the group. Lennon took things more seriously, and was more quick tempered
then the more modish behaving McCartney. Perhaps this was one of the reasons
they were bitter at the end of the decade. They only saw eye to eye when making
music. Oh yeah, they were real close, but that can change like any relationship.

The very start of the film shows him walking back up from the cliffs mate...so no he didn't go over... I swear the first version I saw of this didn't have that bit.
I went on a date to this movie in 78 The boy apologized about the bathhouse scene. I was like what?My love for the Who was cemented.

Pete is right. Americans will dig the music, but they completely don't care about the storyline and the movie about some young mod and scooters and all of that crap. Scooters are for little girls. My sister has one.
I know it is considered a sin to say it, worthy of being stoned to death by paedophiles, but I absolutely hate this film and always have. I used to pretend to like it while at school 'just to fit iiiiiiiiiin!!' Utter crap.

This is the worst description of the film I’ve ever seen. You’ve totally missed the whole point of the film. Jimmys suffers from schizophrenia and has 4 split personalities, each one based on a member of the who. You’ve basically just told the story.
