@@Michael-vf2mw Levi isn’t as good as hikaru but that doesn’t mean he’s on the same level as us, hikaru can lose a game against Levi whilst he could beat on of us with his eyes closed...
@@spoopymug6760 Might have been a bit of mild hyperbole... I have beaten an IM, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime fluke. More accurate would be to say that the difference between Hikaru and Levy is similar to the difference between Levy and a strong amateur, or expert. I'm sure there are some experts in the chat here.
@@spoopymug6760 That would probably depend on the T/C. I'm pretty sure I could give Levy a run for his money in a 5-min game if he were blindfolded. Against Hikaru, not so much. I'm assuming that blindfolding is equivalent to about a 400 point handicap.
WTF?!? This is what GM Hikaru Nakamura's brain is processing when trying to solve complex chess puzzles. He's keeping track of all those arrows. Levy is an IM International Master and he admits he has no idea what's happening anymore. lol

Actually Black is still slightly winning in that line because black has the 2 rooks vs queen and knight imbalance as well as 3 passed pawns over white on the g,f,and e files as well as whites queen being on a1 and their knight on it’s home square. All this going against white and amazingly it’s only about -1.0 in blacks favor, but it’s technically winning for black regardless. As cool as Levi’s line is, it’s wrong. The reason dxc3 doesn’t work in this puzzle is after Bxd8,cxb2, white has the nifty move Bf6, threatening Qxg7# as well as blocking blacks f pawn from advancing, which ,no offense to Levi, is an even sicker line than Rh8+. Whether black checks with their rook first or not, black will be forced to take on f6 with their bishop to stop the mate on g7 (if g6, Rh8# is checkmate), which still blocks their f pawn. Now when white plays Qh3, there is no f5 or f6 for black. So black either must play Rd8+ followed by g6 so their bishop covers the h8 square, allowing white to get both their king and knight off the back rank so Rxa1 is possible after bxa1. This leads to a queen, rook, knight vs rook, rook, bishop and 3 passed pawns imbalance, so white has an extra rook in this case. Or if black doesn’t go for the Rd8+, g6 line, they can instead play Bh4, sacking their bishop in order to free the f pawn. The issue with this is after Qxh4, f5, Qh7+, black now has to always keep their king close to the g7 pawn since there is no bishop defending it. If black tries to run towards the queenside, white will have Qxg7, defending the a1 square after bxa1. Regardless of what line black chooses, white will manage to force a draw. Very cool puzzle to examine.
There is a point when you do chess puzzles where the difficulty goes from basic tactics to complicated lines and it feels impenetrable. For instance, you fail the puzzle because you made a wrong move, you look up what the right move was supposed to be, and that move brings up even more questions and further confusion. You dig even more and find it was best move because arrows all over the board like the clip at the start of this video and decide you should maybe go to the liquor store and see what's on sale.
The fact the Levy can even communicate with Hikaru and understand what he's talking about should be commended! It is awesome how online chess is bringing back again competition around chess puzzles. More than five hundred years ago it was common to have bets on that.
A very large part of being good at chess is realizing how bad lines are and when to stop considering them. This looks very complicated but when you have tens of thousands of hours of practice youre just visualizing the board 3 to 4 moves ahead of what youre imagining it. Then seeing a simplified form of the board 3 to 4 moves later. Even bobby fischer said this. You chase lines mentally then just let them loose when they "feel" bad.
