Brilliant and very handy video just what I needed I have one window to do and I know I can do this by myself the board is cheap enough from Wickes just needed to know how. Learnt so much from UA-cam.
You could do a dry run with cardboard first. Once they are right you could then use them as templates for the real thing. Have a go. You might surprise yourself 😃
I'm actually ripping my uPVC cover off to put down some painted MDF. The PVC looks okay until you put anything on it and all the micro scratches are basically impossible to fill.
Buy a tube of the cheapest, nastiest silicone then splodge and bodge like a proper British builder. In a few months you’ll have black mould growing on the ends and you can just paint over it with trade emulsion, which just falls straight off. That’s how I’d do it anyway. Yeehaw! 🤠
I,ve had a go and done a couple of sills and cut them out but not stuck them down yet , one is spot on with about 1mm out , whilst the other is 1mm out on one side and about 1.5mm to 2mm out on the other side , is this ok or tolerable , will to cover up nicely once sealed with white silicone or should I get a closer fit Thanks
Brilliant video and this convinced me to do our downstairs bathroom. I've cut out the sill and glued it down and it looks great, with your help! One question i do have now is what sealant to use to fill the gap between the sill and the window? I obviously wont be painting it. Thanks again for the very helpful video!
The existing had hardly any overhang, which was one of the reasons for putting a cover on it. The cover was about 5mm thick so that added to the existing gave an ok amount of overhang.
Great video , feeling a bit more confident to have a go myself , got 8 2 metre sills approx and was quoted £500 which I feel is just too much , is it worth buying the boards and end caps etc and having a go myself
Maybe buy enough to do one and do that one, taking your time. Go ahead with the rest afterwards when you're happy. There's no reason why you won't be able to do this, as long as your measurements are right. 😀
@@MrGeoffreySmith that great , given me a bit of confidence to have a go , just wanted to ask will a fine saw do and do I use normal white silicone , thanks
What sort of shops sell this window sill cover? What it is made from and what do I ask for? Is it called fascia? Also please what did you use to stick it down? I need to know what to buy and where from. Thank you so much
I'm in the UK and I bought this from SELCO. I'm sure you could get it from somewhere like B&Q also. Just ask for window sills. To stick it down you could use something like Gripfill or No More Nails.
Mr Geoffrey Smith another quick question- are the blanking end caps used to fill the gap between window and sil cover if the depth isn’t enough? Or is it pure decorative finish? Some of my sils are 280mm, so could I use a 250mm + end cap or would I use a 300mm and cut it down?
@@XO.Clinic My original sills were an odd size, so I bought oversize and cut to fit. I always prefer to do that. Check out what they have at the shops near you.
What is electric saw called? Do I have to use one of those to cut the board or will a saw work? Is what you used to stick it down the same as what you used to seal the edges? So many questions, I hope you reply soon!
Hi. I used a grinder with a diamond blade on it. A saw would be more aggressive, so go easy with it. Around the edges I put normal sealant and to stick it down I used Gripfil.
Hi, do you know if this would work over a tiled window sill? I want to diy our window sills but would rather not start removing tiles as don’t want to get it too wrong! TIA
Hi Ellen. As long as the tiles aren't loose then it should be fine. If some of the tiles are loose, lift them off and stick them down before fixing down your new sill. I hope it works out😀
Hi Geoffrey i need exterior upvc sills to go straight on to brickwork, do you use the same type of sills, the original owners have put ceramic tile stuck to the brickwork and it looks crap cheers Jeff
Hi! Im sure you can get these sills in exterior upvc. You can stick straight onto the tiles using something like No More Nails (as long as it's exterior graded) but make sure the tiles are level first. The tiles would also need to be dry and clean when you do it. Good luck!
Very informative clip, but really made me cringe working with the grinder minus the guard. Setting a VERY BAD example. I work in industry and that would get you sacked instantly ! I am suprised yu still have fingers too!
He applied the caulk and then failed to tun his finger over it to settle it in to the groove and finish it off. That is the point at which I stopped watching and moved on. If you're careful when measuring and cutting, you'll be fine. I hope it goes well 😀
Have a bay window to do like this and no idea if i can just do this x3 but mitre them as diy, alot of pressure to get it right 😂

Looks so much better with the new sills! Nice job Mr. Smith 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Thanks Claire 😀
I need this done in my house. I like the look will the caulk be enough to keep it in place.
The gripfill I put down first sticks it in. The white caulk around the edge is to finish the job.
@@MrGeoffreySmith can you tell the names of the products if possible?
@yepyepyep I used gripfil to stick it down and decorators caulk to finish the edges. Things will have different names in different countries.
@@MrGeoffreySmith thanks for the quick reply mate! I'm in the UK too
Good luck if you're doing this too!
Awesome practical vid. Thank you.
Thanks Shaheen! 😀
You can also use a Stanley knife and straight edge instead of an angle grinder, less mess and neater cut 👍
True, though I was using diamond blade which cut very clean.
I'm actually ripping my uPVC cover off to put down some painted MDF. The PVC looks okay until you put anything on it and all the micro scratches are basically impossible to fill.
A builder did this and it overhangs the original wooden frame by 2cm in some places. It is reasonable to ask them to cut it back and reapply?
I think it is always reasonable to say that a job is not how you want it or expected it. Tell them you're not pleased with the end result.
How do you neaten the end of the bull nose? Just put some sealant in it ?
Hi Lesley. You can buy caps to clip in, but I filled these. Do it neatly and it's fine.
What blade have you got in the angle grinder?
It was a diamond disc, but you can cut it with a normal hand saw.
what is the white glue you are using called?
I used silicone around the edges.
How do you make the outside edges look good (small bit at the front)? Not just left as cut upvc - which isn’t aesthetically pleasing.
Hi. You can get small profile pieces to fit those gaps.

@Beng12952 still waiting for that mould to show up 🤣
@@MrGeoffreySmith Gotta be cheap and nasty though, plenty of fairy liquid behind it too.
What kind of blade is that? Would a multitool be ok for plastic
Sure. Even a hand saw would do.

Well done! A few mm is fine. As you say, the silicone will cover that 😀
@@MrGeoffreySmith that’s great thanks for your help again
You need to scribe your window reveals left and right before you make any cuts for a tighter and neater fit
Where can I buy this stuff? I'm in Canada. Can I put it right on the drywall?
Do you mean the sill?
@@MrGeoffreySmith yes the sill
@@MrGeoffreySmith I'm thinking of using granite instead I see a lot of used vanities and countertops for sale seems like a cheaper option for me
Granite would be great, if you can get it.
Do you need to use gripfill as an adhesive or would a simple unibond no nails adhesive glue work?
Any kind of similar product is fine, no nails etc. I used grip fill because that's what I had. 😀

Do you always use plastic inside? I’ve used plastic on one but wasn’t thinking it was right so I was going to use wood
Not always, but there's nothing wrong with using plastic indoors. It's quite common now.
You should have included levelling the cover
Normally, yes. In this case the old sill was leavel, so I just followed that. Thanks for watching 😀

White silicone will seal the edges no problem. Any saw would do as long as the teeth aren't too aggressive. Fine tooth is better.

Great video but you never said what glue to stick down sill!!!
For this I used Gripfill. Very sticky stuff. Gorilla glue is also good.
what type of disc did you use in the angle grinder to cut the pvc? thanks
I was also tiling the bathroom around the same time so it was probably a stone cutting disc. Any disc would do. It's only plastic.
