Nice Video- You're right I have not done a video on cleaning the Tormek style CBN wheels we sell. We have quite a few knife sharpening folks using those wheels now. We appreciate your business. - Ken Rizza
Wow and this is unexpected but this Ken and he is the master of all things CBN and as I have said in my other videos without his wheels I don't know how I could keep up with all the work that comes in my shop. Thanks for checking out the video. I have a 400 grit Spartan sitting in my shopping cart now just waiting on a sale hint, hint Just kidding...In all seriousness Ken keeps his wheels very affordable so if you go check out Woodturners Wonders you will be amazed . I also put in a special order CBN for my Twice As Sharp scissor sharpener so I can stop using the messy white aluminum oxide stones they come with for regular scissors I will do a video on that wheel once I get it.
For those of you following me I just want to say thank you I know some of you saw the comment from the guy on my video why I switched to CBN and grinding dry saying the Spartan Wheels are cheap because they are plastic. Just know my 1000 grit has sharpened between 800 and 1200 knives already and is still going strong and I have zero issues with the plastic. That guy sells CBN wheels over seas and I guess he spends his time bashing who he sees as competition. I'm sure he doesn't own one of Ken's wheels but trust me when I say they are very good quality wheels, and very affordable. This is Ken's website for those of you who haven't seen it or are considering a CBN wheel for sharpening knives woodturnerswonders.com/
So all the Spartans are marked unavailable from the manufacture .What happened Ken ? I assume this was a very recent development because it wasn't that way a day ago.I guess I should have pulled the trigger on my 400 grit sooner.
@@ALXSHARPEN Just checked and the listings say, "Expected arrival 9/8/2022." Maybe they're made somewhere in China that's experiencing covid lockdowns?
I was looking at those wheels but ended buying a set (160, 400, 1000) from Schleiff Junkies. What I like about those wheels is that they can be run in water with no corrosion inhibitor. I thought about running dry, but metal dust concerns me.
@@BladeLabMiami The Spartan wheels can be run in water as long as you dry them when done.
I have a vacuum system and hood set up for mine and have runs several test at only 90 RPM the Tormek doesn’t throw dust much at all it’s not very fast. I get far more dust from my Ken Onion and 1x30 and my low speed Jet Grinder Have tested also with strong magnets placed on the Tormek guide rod and have not seen any dust on them. So I think it doesn’t throw it very high.
@@WoodturnersWonders That's awesome only criticism I hear from some people is they are concerned about the dust. Now I have a strong Jet 4" vacuum set up next to mine and a fan blowing to push dust away from me but compaired to other tools in my shop like my a Ken Onion Elite and my 1x30 belt sander and my two grinders and Buffer they all make far more dust than my Tormek spinning at only 90 RPM. I can easily put on a good 3M mask and be fine and I do that sometimes when I don't want to hear the vacuum system. Fortunately I can put mine outside and hear almost nothing. I have actually grown to liking the feeling for dry grinding better than in water the Wonder Slick Stick has just the right amount of lubrication I find water is actually not as smooth and requires more hand pressure to keep the knife jig in place.
Great info, definitely helps, thanks.
Thank you for your video. Worked really good. Thanks again
I sharpen sawmill blades with cbn, my wheel runs in mineral oil spray and has magnets in the oil tray. Great job on the videos!
Very useful information. I use CBN to sharpen saw chain cutters and it is difficult to clean the saw chains thoroughly, thus the wheels get cruddy on occasion. I have been using a soft white rubber art eraser (I guess it is a substitute for art-gum), but your method may work better. WIll give it go.
Tormek T8 coming in today.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have a TORMEK T8. Dressing the stone wheels, constantly adjusting sharpening angle due to wear, and changing the water all the time leads me to getting a CBN wheel. The only concern about CBN wheel is the metal dust from dry sharpening. How do you take care of the dust?

Made a video on it just last week on what I do and some options you have Using CBN
Thanks for your video on cleaning cbn wheels.
I use my Tormek for "hobby" sharpening, would the cost of a cbn wheel be worthwhile? I have 2 cbn wheels on grinders with Woodturning Wonders jig. I haven't sharpened turning tools on the Tormek, yet. Still learning to sharpen knives.
Thanks again😊
Just a couple of questions: What grit do you use most and do you perform the same process for all grits?
I use 400 and 600 the most but about the same 1000!the least I clean all the same but on 400 it’s more blotting because it so abrasive it would just tear up the shop towel so I spray it more and sometimes scrub it with an old tooth brush. It cleans up easily.
Do you like the Spartan wheel more than the Tornado or do you have both? I am thinking the Tornado style would be better on a curved knife blade (concave) curve. I have a Tormek and as you know their wheels are not curved on the sides.
I have some but they are on CBN on a low speed grinder. I like the Spartan best on highly curved blades I tend to use my 1x30
If you use those CBN Wheels in water would you have to clean them wouldn't most of the debris get carried away into the water cuz if it wouldn't wouldn't you have to clean a diamond wheel the same way same way
You can use in water it's just nice that you don't have to diamond has to be used in water CBN does not
