Does UA-cam give out Emmy for video excellent? Your video I nominate. the lighting on the subject is very clear. You managed to show the viewer your finger and hand work w/of getting in the way . Editing is spot on audio very good . No music or air compressor background noise over the narration.
I am rebuilding a turbo 400 and watched this video twice through and also while re-assembly. Probably one of the most informative and well made videos on utube to date. A double thumbs up o you thanks again!!!!
Just finishing up my transmission now. I haven't built a transmission in 24 years (since high school) and these videos were the perfect companion to rebuild manuals and other online sources. Sometimes it's hard to put pictures into perspective on putting together different assemblies etc. and you did that very well. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This is hands down the best TH400 rebuild video on UA-cam! This was just like or maybe even better than observing my auto tech college transmission instructor twenty eight years ago :-)
Like I said about the other video “part1” this is a excellent video and I like how precise it was really explains a lot of information I forgot from 1990 in “v” school I’m in the process of rebuilding a 400 turbo now. Thanks again!
Great videos. I'm rebuilding my TH400 out of my truck. This is my first rebuild ever and your videos are a great help. I know how much work goes into filming and editing it's not easy. So thank you.
That was very good! Excellent Job--->I owe you a beer, hell, I owe you a case of beer! That was very informative. RANK: Top 10 most concise and informative video on UA-cam. Thanks!
Wish I could do a double thumbs up cause as the guy before me said, Best Turbo 400 build video ever !!! Thanks You.... Gonna go by me a chevy version core and do one up for myself or my street toy...
You left out all of the wave steels, is this for a racing application? I watched a lot of TH400 videos and they said without the wavy steels it will shift hard into gear! I am currently working on one myself and need to decide on wether or not to put these in or which ones to leave out. Great video, Thanks! B
This is a little trick I learned when installing the direct drum into case, use the forward hub in place of the flat pressure plat as a handle. It makes this job easier, after you have it in place, switch out the pressure plates. Pay attention to those t-bearing when you take it apart, very easy to get them wrong. The gasket on the rear servo can be installed backwards, causing no reverse, pay attention to how it goes on.
Thanks for the video. Well done . Love your home made specialty tools AWESOME! You stated you have not done one for more than 10 years! I assume then you must have done a lot of them at one time. Again well done.
Excelent vídeo. I will repair my TH400 soon and it will be na excelente help. The only diference is that my transmission has the old filter. The rest is similar? Thanks.
wow! never mind my question on your other vid.. it was answered in these 2 videos.. very informative! i will be undertaking this job this coming winter as my 401 is almost complete, and i have the quadratrac trans.. the only thing i didn't like is the lack of speedometer. i need to figure out a way to machine that boss to accept one.
Awesome video! It couldn't have came at a better time. I have my 74 H/O trans out and all apart and ready to be put back together. First time doing this so you have shed a little light on some of the stuff the book I have didn't. On a side note can you use a large C-clamp to press the clutch springs down as long as I have some kind of spacer to not interfere with the center? I don't have a press.
What does removing the spring under the 2-3 accumulator piston accomplish? I thought the wavy plates in the clutches were designed to make the transmission shift more smoothly. Is there an advantage to replacing them with smooth plates? Great video. Bob
with the forward drum not being a "shifting" drum, why wouldn't you put the waffled clutches in the direct drum instead? to me it looks like it would help get the oil out of the way as that clutch engages. just a question, i'm not saying you are wrong.
thanks for the video. I've built 4l60s 4l80s, glides, Lencos, Saginaw, muncies, Bert's and Brinn's, cctvs, t5s was seeing what i was getting into with the th400, doesn't seem that hard.
Love your video and the details. Im attempting to drop the direct clutch assembly through the frictions like you did on 7:59. Is there any other way of telling if its fully engaged? I was under the impression that I installed and all engaged but having problems puting the pump cover back on.
Watched it twice. 2 thumbs up. Still messing with my OLDS 403. The builder is figuring out how to pay me back. Unreal. Noticed on my "Mondello" Turbo 400, a scored input shaft. I'm thinking I ought to have an "expert" look at it before I reinstall. Your thoughts? Thank again.
I see that for the direct drum you kept the steel piston but used an aluminum piston for the forward clutch. Why is this, what's the advantage? Also, are the pistons the same between the two clutch assemblies? Working on rebuilding a 400 for my 69 Buick Special Deluxe 430-BBB. Great video. Thank you. Jake
What did you end up doing for the speedo? I'm going to be doing the same thing, th400 out of a FSJ bolted behind the 360 in my 71 Javelin. Also, how did you compensate for the 4 degree rotation on the th400 with the cross member in the Javelin? did you just shim the trans mount?
I'm first going to say thank you for making this video. I'd normally take my transmission somewhere to be rebuilt, however this time around budget requirements mean I'm doing it myself. I'm going to be using your video as my how to. Do you have a video of how you made your specialty tools?
How about a thumbs up. This may very well be the best self help video I have ever seen on youtube. I think youtue is the only reason for the internet. I see your user name is oldsmob455 leading me to believe somewhere along the line, you are an Olds buy and you are making upgrades to an amc trans. How did we lose you? Again, loved this video and look forward to putting it to use in the next few day. Thanks for taking time out of your life to post this!
Great video, what would cause snap ring on back side of intermediate drum to expand? (Open up from closed position)? I upgraded to a sprial lock, but wondering why it expanded a LOT. THANKS
Hi there have questions if you can answer please I have a Cadillac Coupe Deville 1968 and I want to remove the engine and put 4.3 Jimmy engine 1995 is that can fit or I need to change some stuff to make it fit thank you
Great video thanks, also would be great-full for some further info if possible please RE: >the spool valve closest to the 2-3 accumulator (@20.41min/seconds top left of screen on this video), my valve looks identical to the valve in this video but the workshop manual shows a *second relief value & second spring*?, wasn't sure if i had lost these 2 pieces. (BTW the picture in the workshop manual shows a slightly different looking value, only 2 radial valve surfaces rather than 3 as your video shows). I just don't want to put it together & then have to strip it down again. Be great-full for your consideration. Cheers.
I'm doing basically the same thing by using a AMC case and a caddy th400 for the long tail (deleting the transfer case) and making it 2wd. How did you deal with NO speedo gear hole in the case? I'm old school and don't want a digital speedo in my Cherokee dash. Answer here Please, this email has me locked in and don't use it much.
have an inch n qtr clearance from the forward clutch to the base of the oil pump as u recommended that is should be. but when tightening the bolts on oil pump, tranny locks up. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanx....
Great video thanks. I watched both to try to find the reason behind my problem. I bought a new B&M TH400 for my 40 Stude and just got the engine built. Problem is all forward gears work but if you put in reverse it acts like you are standing on the brake ad no movement. Anyone have Ideas?
Great video! After reading my rebuild book a couple times this was a great video to bring it all "down-to-earth" for me. Question: did you need to have your Center Support machined in order to use the Case Saver Ring?
***** Ah gotchya, that would explain why mine already had one. I thought perhaps the previous owner had already done the modification. Another question: What are you using as a stand to hold the case upright while you drop your parts in? I've thought about trying to use a barrel or large bucket of some sort but haven't come up with anything good. I thought this was pretty clever tinyurl.com/pvpyo7y
@@NoahPorch I use a five gallon plastic bucket, I lay a piece of 1/2 inch plywood over the top of the bucket, take a hole saw and drill a hole larger than the output shaft. Stand the trans upright on the plywood, and the shaft fits into the hole. You can also work on the pump, forward drum, and assemble the gear train.
I have a th400 in a 88 c3500 built by monster anyway it has around 7000 miles on it two weeks ago it shifted funny into 3rd gear after about a 1/4 mile it straighten up and shifted fine (when going into 3rd gear it would feel like it went into neutral like the direct clutch wasn't getting enough pressure) then for two weeks it drove fine always shifted very firm and this morning I went to pay a utility bill and I went to back up and no reverse or third gear how can I air check the direct clutch while its in the truck? can you do a short video I believe I have a bad leak somewhere in the direct clutch circuit please message me if you can give me some pointers thanks

From the book,"INstall the center support to case retaining ring with its beveled side up, locating the ring gap adjacent to the band anchor pin. Work it into place with a screwdriver and your fingers. Then tap the retaining ring in three places with a hammer and screwdriver, to seat it fully in its case grove." Interpret that how your will. Best TH400 vid on the net! Thanks!!
Many thanks for making this video. I rebuilt my th400 last weekend with your clear step-by-step guidance!

Awesome video. Very helpful in rebuilding my first turbo 400 for my vette!!!! Saved alot of money doing it myself!
Well done. Very detailed. I am sure I could do a high quality rebuild using this video as a reference . Thank you for your time you saved me alot .
Great video. I do admired your wisdom. you must rebuilt my 69 Turbo 400 trans! just a complement! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a ton for the video! I had a chiltons and your video and I rebuilt my buddy's 400 unit. 13 passes on spray and no problems so far!
Great vid! Good to see you show the transmission the respect it deserves. Cleanliness is key.
Thanks. Appreciate it. Giving us mortals the confidence to give this a go.
Thanks for the video. I know I wouldn't have the patience for a task like this. Looks like I'm buying a new trans
Most excellent video, and this helped me out a lot when I rebuilt my turbo 400 . Thankyou!

this is my 3rd or 4th time watching these 2 videos. I just love it. Fantastic job sir. i admire you for this.

Nicely done. Don't know that I have the cajones to tackle my own th400... But I appreciate learning what's involved.
Great video and straightforward info.
Nice job on your forward drum the aluminum piston is it a non checkball? Also what bushing driver kit are you using again nice job thank you jb.
Great video. Thank you so much for making this. It is going to help me tremendously when I deal with mine :)
Thank you very much for the two videos!
excellent videoing skills ! and good technical skills !

Both of those modifications are suggested to make the trans shift quicker and in turn harsher. This trans was used in a performance application.
Exilent video
Thanks from Iceland :)
Good job know can you show how to hook up the kick down on the side of Case

Pistons come in steel and aluminum with no real advantage either way that I'm aware of. I just used what I had.
everyone prefers aluminum pistons for performance builds. i'm not sure why.
25:08 The satisfying sound of a happy TH400.
You forgot to tap or 3/8 cup plug where 2nd ring was taken off the center support?

No but you can buy the tools. I'd advise getting the book I showed in the video.
Super job! But what have you decided to do about the speedometer?
Very concise. Thanks

This trans worked fine when all was done. There were quite a few variations on valve/spring assmblies in these valve bodies.

The late style open kick down solenoid didn't use a gasket.
Do I only need one snap ring in the rear part of the gear or do I need two?

What kind of transmission fluid does the th400 take?
Nice Job.
Great video
I saw that little Switcheroo
What does eliminating the wavy steel do?

So when you install the direct clutch assembly there is no thrust washer there correct?
The center support snap ring, you said bevel out. Is that towards the front or rear?

what is that socket wrench that you use to open the one screw on the side of the oil pan?
