  • Idella Johnson was raised by a mother with paranoid schizophrenia and a father with substance abuse. Growing up, she lived with high functioning depression. When she discovered acting, she found solace and comfort in escaping her life to play a character but continued to struggle with her mental health. Before acting on her suicidal ideations, Idella reached out to her best friend for help. After three months in an inpatient outpatient program, Idella and her best friend brought their stories about family, friendship, and mental health to the stage. Through creative expression and theatrical arts, they started a conversation around mental health that made a big impact in their community. Today, Idella continues to advocate and use creative expression for mental health by providing support, resources, and hope for others so they don’t feel alone.
