Why did scarlet fever used to be such a dangerous disease, and why (although the burden of disease is far less than in years past) do outbreaks continue to occur, even after the development of penicillin?

I got it at 19 in junior college. Had a swollen lymph node for like a month, nasty rash but penicillin was the ticket. The school nurse diagnosed it, was listening to my heart. I didnt have health insurance of course. And I dont think I even had the money for the penicillin but she hooked it up lol.

Punitive prescribing laws. Identification is not simple at the early stages. Parents must demand a strep test.
