I got hit with fungus gnats when I started poles. Even using my own aroid mix I still don’t think it was well draining enough because the excess water from my poles would seep into the pot causing it to never dry out. Since then I am trying leca but if you use a mix go extremely chunky or be careful about how much water you put into the pole. It can get tricky.
I'll tell you why the fungus gnats! I never had a problem with them on or because of my moss poles, but this last time I bought moss, I got some cheaper stuff than the New Zealand moss I had purchased before. I made my new poles with the new moss, and a few days later, I started noticing fungus gnats. I didn't think too much about it since there were only a few. Before long, however, there were dozens! And I'm still seeing them pretty regularly. I actually saw a couple crawing on one of my moss poles, and that's when I put 2 and 2 together. NEVER buy the cheap moss! Not that it's all that cheap either, but it's definitely not worth the little bit of savings. P.S. I only have 8 moss poles.
I only have one moss pole and I got fungus gnats within 2 weeks of having it. Using the same potting medium I’ve been using for a year. I am so discouraged and it makes me not want to keep the pole moist constantly because of it.
I am not sure to be honest, my anecdotal evidence is saying I am getting some fungus gnats, I have not investigated this more, not alot but some, so not sure if it is the new plants I have had hanging about that were in soil or the tree fern fibre, the jury is still out

I rarely see gnats around my plants or moss poles but I keep a few pinguicula around to get rid of the ones that sneak in from outside.

Turns out they only want to live in my moss poles 🤔
They do live in mine too.
Hey Nora 🌹 how attractive is tree fern substrate in moss poles to fungus gnats etc? Any difference?
