I love this album, because: 1. It references the previous album and foreshadows the next one in a beautiful way... 2. It's a concept album: a road trip to a really dark place... 3. And it's a badass album with kickass songs!
Here's how I look at QotSA's discography: Imagine someone waking up (Queens of the Stone Age) and getting ready for a night out (Villains). This person enters the car and goes through several weird places (Songs for the Deaf) arrives in the place of the party, lets it loose (Era Vulgaris) until losing control (Lullabies to Paralyze), gets wasted and wakes up the next day without having the slightest idea of what happened (... Like Clockwork). The way the story of what happened at the night (Rated R) is, at least, interesting.
The only other album Dave Grohl is really on is ...Like Clockwork where he plays on roughly half the tracks But if you want a fairly similar stuff with plenty of Dave, try Them Crooked Vultures. They are a 3 piece of Josh Homme (Queens) on Guitar + vocals, Dave on drums and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on Bass Edit: The laughing is actually a reference to a song from their previous album, in which the vocals have the same rhythm
Mosquito song is such a masterpiece, the way they use a 12 string guitar, then slowly bring in the accordion, a piano solo with violin in the background, the ensemble with tuba, trombone, oboe, timpani, the original guitar line under it all, then a beautiful guitar solo over it all followed by the acoustic bass. I can't describe my love for it!
Mosquito Song is a masterpiece in my opinion. One of my favourite songs ever! Like Clockwork is a great choice... my top 3 QOTSA albums would have to be... 1. Like Clockwork 2. Villains 3. Songs for the Deaf But their whole catalogue is honestly amazing!
Lucille Van Pelt U can argue that like clockwork isn’t Queens, but it’s still an amazing album. U didn’t even like Evil Is Landed? Or Feet Don’t Fail Me?
As far as the Guitar tones go, most were played through really cheap shitty solid state amps, with mics across the room. Most of the drive and Fuzz was just from pushing the amps, not pedals. The sound engineer has a video on UA-cam on how they got the tones, it's great.
Mosquito Song is a masterpiece. Its like the perfect postmortem lullaby for the ending. You're basically rotting in the middle of the desert while mosquitos suck whats left of the dried blood in your corpse.
I love these reaction videos. I’m a musician who is heavily influenced by queens of the Stone Age and I love it that you’re a musician as well who can really appreciate the music from that standpoint. Like clockwork is a great album but i know you would like era vulgaris. Hope to see more QOTSA reaction vids.
Saw them live recently, opened with Do it Again and the encore was Song for the Deaf and Song for the Dead, they did a lot from this album, it was awesome :D
Literally every queens album is phenomenal. In my opinion era vulgaris is the most underrated album in their discography, so maybe react to that one next! Great video!
I know reactions is not what you normally do, but i'd love to see you do more of theese, you clearly know about music and your reactions are cool becouse of that! i'd really like to see you react to The Mars Volta's first album if you've never listened to them, that album is produced by Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chilli Pepper's producer), the bass parts are played by Flea, and some guitars by Frusciante!
Great couple of videos! Really enjoyed the experience! I Also love Mosquito Song, probably my 3rd favourite of the album. That clasical guitar solo (and all that instrumental section) gives me goosebumps every time. Hope you do more! (of any albumo not just QOTSA hehe). Cheers from Argentina!
Mosquito Song has always been my favourite song on this album. It's really haunting. I think Another Love Song and The Sky Is Fallin' are 2nd are 3rd. I also like how it namedrops the next album, "Lullabyes to Paralyze".
I haven't listened to any Queens of the Stone Age album yet, but I definitely will, because this sounded cool. I'm into alternative rock for a relatively short time (like 1 year) and keep discovering new bands. Most of my life I listened to film and electronic music, and I still love it, and that's probably why I now like Muse and Radiohead so much, they have a lot of electro and cinematic sounds. I also love Kasabian, you could do a reaction of one of their albums if you don't know them (recommend West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, it's just beautiful). Also, I don't know if you're familiar with post rock, it's mainly instrumental and quite repetitive, but some bands are really awesome, can recommend some albums if you want :) PS I'm quite a new subscriber of yours, keep up your great work! I must listen to some your Nightwalk album because also haven't yet :D Cheers!
Tymek Bal I’m the same, was never keen on Led Zeppelin or anything (which is blasphemy to some) but ...Like Clockwork and Queens in general is some of the best music I’ve heard ever. Really hope you like ...Like Clockwork, it’s definitely my favourite album of theirs
Not proud of this, but I used to love going to a big party in the woods, getting really drunk, and cranking "you think I ain't worth a dollar..." and driving as fast and reckless as I could on the gravel logging roads. No other drivers were ever on the road (smalllll town) but *I* should not be here today.....
I never thought I'd like this but listening to albums with you is so entertaining. It's like you're explaining to me why I enjoy them. Keen to see where you go next. ...Like Clockwork for sure would be intriguing.
I definitely had a very similar reaction to Mosquito Song. I closed my eyes and focused on every new element added to the song, glad it hit you the same way
Epic is a perfect definition for "Song for the Deaf". From the screams to the weird transition, with the laughs over " Feel Good Hit of the Summer" background. It's amazing.
Next: The Black Keys (El Camino) Btw Go With The Flow is the first QOTSA song i've ever heard when i was 8/9 y/o but back in the day i was thinking "oh!, what a fantastic song but i don't know what's the title"
1. Like Clockwork 2. Rated R 3. Self Titled 4. SFTD 5. Era Vulgaris 6. Villains 7. Lullabies Even though I have to have a bottom few, I love all these albums.
I don't get the hype on this comment section about Like Clockwork... I mean, it's not a bad album for sure, but definitely behind all the previous ones (yes, even Lullabies :D)
Mosquito song flows well into “This Lullaby” on Lullabies to Paralyze. It’s a short intro, and unfortunately it’s one of the few great songs off the record.
VERY fun. Thanks for doing this. It brings me back to these albums. AND - if you are into a more ALT rock album, I recommend: "Your Majesty" by The Anniversary (2002). "Thickfreakness" by The Black Keys (2003) "Head Trip in Every Key" by Superdrag (1998)
Fun fact: they made a Spanish version of Another Love Song, so you are right on! Love your reaction, very much like mine when I heard it sixteen years ago. Have been a huge fan ever since.
Wow first and foremost that was a very entertaining 2 part series. Seeing you react to a personal favourite album was absolutely fantastic. This was my first QOTSA album and a solid 8/10 for me. Surprisingly it’s not even my favourite even though it’s 8/10. If you’re looking for a darker album (I mean like scary dark lyrics and some eerie sounding songs) check out my favourite Queens album “Lullabies to Paralyze” for me that album is almost perfect. Fair warning though in my opinion lullabies is more inconsistent than SFTD. Higher highs and lower lows. Seeing your reaction to my favourite QOTSA song of all time (which is on LTP, “Tangled up in Plaid”) would make my year. Sorry for the super long comment, love your videos and am a fan of your original songs as well! Have a great day!!!
@@spa2damax I’d still hold true to that statement although I actually have almost completely changed my “album ranking” since writing this comment 4 years ago. I’d now like most put SFTD at number one. It’s just so solid, I really like everything on there. And the highs are also very high undoubtedly. Hangin Tree, Go With the Flow, Do It Again and so on. But yeah Lullabies definitely has some of my absolute all time favourite QOTSA tracks and that used to influence me more than it does now when it comes to rating albums amongst each other.
Really entertaining video, OK C and this are two of my favourite albums! I think you'd like listening to an English band called Arcane Roots, particularly their album 'Blood and Chemistry'. Heavy but melodic, quite Muse/Biffy Clyro sounding, but definitely original.
The issue with most queens albums is they take 4-5 listens to fully appreciate how good they are, so give each album and song chance if its the first listen. They're my favourite all time band, they're definitely a grower but once they grow fuck me you will be invested.
The reason why you hear bits and pieces of radio interludes between songs, and for some intros of the songs is because the album is a concept album about driving through the desert and what is playing on the radio stations on the drive.
My CD has "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" as the ending song, and although it's an average song, it kinda ruins the vibe of Mosquito song and it doesn't fit the vibe of an ending song at all
That was the first time I'd heard Mosquito Song too, and oh wow, yeah I completely agree with you. I had to straight away to go and listen to the whole song
many youtubers while reacting are too "yes" type and you need to stay honest and it will be great can't wait for ...Like Clockwork but I was also happy when you liked parts which were so much influencing for Royal Blood. Bless and peace
Top 5 songs from this album (my opinion) 1. Song for the Dead 2. No One Knows 3. Mosquito Song 4. Hanging Tree 5. ... Millionaire A Song For The Deaf, Go With The Flow, and God Is In The Radio are the runners up.
the laughing bit at the end of song for the deaf is all call back to the song feel good hit of the summer off the second album but with laughing instead of the lyrics- " Nicotine valium Vicodin marijuana ecstacy and alcohol c-c-c-c-cocaine" and yes.. those are the only lyrics to that song. Also hearing song for the deaf live is a fucking mindmelter.
Subscribing in the hopes you check out some more of their albums, or maybe even The Mars Volta! I really think their album Deloused in the Comatorium would blow you away.
All these recommendations - All I can say is you can pretty much pick any QOTSA album and be guaranteed a hell of a time so check it all out! Obviously u don't have to do a reaction for each one but if u liked this then u have a great back catalogue to check out
Great job. Prolly should just go in order and do Lullabies to Paralyze next. Looking forward to ...like clockwork with much anticipation as I think it's their best album. 🔥✅🤘🏻
I really suggest Mars Voltas Deloused in the Comatorium and At The Drive Ins last album Relationship of Command (both bands are driven by the same two core members)
If you pursue more QotSA, I recommend the self titled first album, Rated-R, Lullabies to Paralyze, and Era Vulgaris... Also, of you're not familiar, hear the influence of "Spirit in the Sky" in "God is in the Radio"
dude next you should listen to Rated R or the self titled record because those are from the most badass era of Queens, SOFTD obviously being the best but that era from 98 to like 2003 were the best time for the band I think. definitely check out those two records
A song for the deaf is worth worshiping.

And Mosquito Song is meant to be a hidden track. Just for context
And the lyric's 'Lullabies to Paralyze' is the title of their following album, always loved those little things.
Here's how I look at QotSA's discography:
Imagine someone waking up (Queens of the Stone Age) and getting ready for a night out (Villains). The way the story of what happened at the night (Rated R) is, at least, interesting.
Love that description, it fits well lol
The only other album Dave Grohl is really on is ...Like Clockwork where he plays on roughly half the tracks
But if you want a fairly similar stuff with plenty of Dave, try Them Crooked Vultures. They are a 3 piece of Josh Homme (Queens) on Guitar + vocals, Dave on drums and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on Bass
Edit: The laughing is actually a reference to a song from their previous album, in which the vocals have the same rhythm
Jacob Borg TCV are amazing. You want to talk about a supergroup. Everything on the album is crafted with so much talent it's insane.
Yeah, Feel good hit of the summer
Probot is another great Dave album
+1 for Them Crooked Vultures!
He also had a cool project called probot, you should check it out it's really fucking cool.
I love the fact that I'm not the only one that immediately fell in love with mosquito song
FireBreather you're definitely not! What a breathtaking song
The album was good to me when I listened but that song took my breath away

Fun fact about the last song.
On the physical album it’s a “secret song” that you would only hear if you kept the album playing :)
Sahloknir 23 On my physical copy its track 14 . Its not hidden
CitizenErased 17 not all albums, apparently. It’s track 14 on mine, but not labelled.
Mine is hidden. I guess there are different versions.
It's hidden as well as the real song for the deaf (it's a track 0 song)
in the back cover it is actually listed as "hidden track", so it's not so hidden after all lol
that tasteful guitar solo on "im gonna leave you" was by the legendary Dean Ween.

Go with the Flow is in my top favorite Qotsa songs. So simple and straight forward but the melody is so addictive.
The guy singing I'm Gonna Leave You is the bassist too. Same guy who screams in other songs. All 3 are in Songs for the Deaf
The mosquito song is such a beautifully dark song. If you like that song listen to lullabies to paralyze. Its such beautiful, dark and romantic album.
