  • I made a video on Viking City Builder a few days back, and it showed a new, solo developed medieval game that seemed to copy the trailer from Manor Lords. But lets look deeper into Play way games, a company that has some dodgy marketing tactics but most importantly find out if its a Scam or just Sketchy?

Again huge thank you for the support Resonant. This whole situation did sting a little. I think it would really benefit the industry to popularize the term 'concept trailer' - the developers and publishers could still do market research but without being dishonest.

@@ThePlayWay I am attributing to the games you have announced without having concluded weather you should develop the game or not thus far and do not have a demo.
In the case of a demo being launched on steam I have no query nor objection to, however as the title of this video implies it brings a company to question when a game is announced and is it shut down before any form of release.
I would not have risked losing potential players on the grounds of distrust and miscommunication and we wouldn't be discussing this otherwise if this wasn't the case. Nevertheless, I believe giving people a voice to express their wishes and ideas is a splendid idea and my solution would have been to form a dedicated centre for people do so for games without a demo and that is my answer to your question on "how to do it better".
I understand making these announcements on steam may attract larger number of people yet with the lack of clarity and communication on your steam pages on the account of searching for confirmation from interested players on weather to proceed with the formation of the game, it would only brew further distrust and conjecture, a good example being "Roman Empire Wars".

Steam should force these developers to label it as “Concept Art” or something to show it is just an idea and not a game yet.
Honestly it’s a good idea but pretending it’s a game that’s coming out then completely dismantling the game if not enough people like it sucks for those who wanted the game.

Doing these "Concept trailers" might actually be pretty good overall when implemented honestly, testing the waters to see what people are interested in and pursuing those projects can only be a good thing for all involved, but only when done honestly. As it stands now however I cannot in good conscience support their methods of blatantly lying about their projects at the expense of other Devs

  • @TheWillage93
    @TheWillage93 3 роки тому +9

The kicker is that their method is actually rather sound when it comes to business. In actuality, they make nothing. They find out what topic is popular and cling on to it. I thing the " X City Builder" series is the perfect example: Egypt was teased and it saw massive praise. So much so that they hop on the bandwagon and just start churning out tried and true settings for the same concept.
We see that with Viking CB too: Not only is it building off of the hype of Manor Lords, but it's also building off of the recent resurgence of the Viking theme in the video game scene (Valheim, AC Valhalla, Norsegard, etc.)
After your Viking CB video I went back and took a look at them on steam and was surprised to see they were behind a lot of the popular "Simulator" Games (most notable/popular being car mechanic simulator.) And that follows the same formula: they had one well received format that was released when the genre was popular and they proceeded to clone as many as possible as quick as possible to maximize profits.
I mean if we're being honest they're doing the same thing titles like AC or CoD do, just on a smaller, quicker scale. Also, this is why I follow stuff (especially EA titles) before I Wishlist them.

First time I saw Roman Empire Wars on Steam I was shocked at just how awesome and ambitious this project was, and was really hyped. The lack of trailers, the sheer scope of the promises and, well, the pretty generic title, however did make me look up the developer on Steam to see if this was indeed something for real. I saw there were another 2 or 3 games with exactly the same shit going on for them, just changing the setting, so I doubted a little. Have had some weird experiences with backwater chineese developers and their games, but I decidided to give them a follow in case they had any news. Now, seeing your video, I just realized the sheer scope of this company, and how, unknowingly to me, many of the actual games I have were published by them. I really thank you for posting this video. It does affect negatively the solo and small team of indie developers. Publishing thousands of low-quality mockup games on social media ads causes demoralization to those who are working so hard to make an idea possible. Steam and other platforms should prevent companies to publish not more than 2 or 3 games at a time and using that threshold to finish at least 1 out of your 3 games on purchased licence to allow yourself/them to buy another one.
This is what has been put in discussion in the US regarding Facebook as well, We can't allow other companies on becoming the monopoly of their own market and giving no chance to future competition.
I don't think Hollywood wants to distribute a movie trailer knowing that their audience will never watch that movie, or worse, making it look like it's cool and ready, but in the end showing up buggy with developers that don't know how to take care of their clients and community.
Here again, I am going to quote Ready Player One "They are hated by gunters because they have seemingly endless funding to cheat to get the egg. The Sixers' main goal is to find the egg for IOI so that IOI can take control of the Oasis"

I have worked in the gaming industry for nearly 20 years and worked for and on some of biggest in industry and practice some of these new companies do is mind boggling to me i have noticed what playway are doing and stay clear of games they push now. Builders of egypt is a frustrating one over 2 years of development and still not finished, the demo they released this week has game breaking bugs and for time spent on it has made me think its not worth the wait, hell Pharaoh remake has even beat them to the punch and i loved the original game so many years ago. Quite a few developers are taking too long to make games that once they are out the buzz around that type like vikings etc has moved on and the game is quite dated. X Simulator games are just getting too much now and some are just rinse and repeat and once released are not built upon with dlc or extra content. Manor Lords is a game i have been looking forward to alot and seeing the progress on that game along with the updates has kept me interested still and i believe it will be an awesome game to play.

From the 1st had i have to say yes, you are right. It works as following: first someone working there gives an idea of new game, if ppl higher up like it the 'game idea' gets a steam page and trailer. Trailer is made in Unity or similar and takes ~2 weeks to finish, and it goes on steam page. At this point noone has started to work on game itself, and noone will until it generates enough interest. The same goes with their VR versions

U boat is actually not in a very early version its going to realese soon they have released some very good updates but at the same time players sometimes don't change to the new version because when u buy it you have the first draft of the game basically but all they have to do is change it to b128 in the properties this results in players rating the game 1 star because they just don't think

Thanks for the video, I thought I was the only one to realise that 80% of the videos are fake games, or games that will be developed only if they are very well received. I posted it several times on PlayWay's channel but they always delete my comments, that's why you'll only see people commenting good stuff. And lately every time I comment, then my comment doesn't appear, I log in youtube, enter in comments with another account and it's gone, so I think they've already muted my account.

Can there be an update video on playway? I don't know if its just me, but some of their games seem to be games that are also acquired by them and not developed by them "Mr. Prepper" being one of them as it has a Demo on steam then later got another demo called Prologue, then had the game full dropped on steam. Diesel Punk Wars I'm pretty positive was also not initially started by them. Could be wrong on this, but would be interesting if there could be an update on this.

Good job for this video. It's unfortunate that's you alone on the entire UA-cam exposing them. I've been boycotting them for years. Even worse than fake trailers of fake games is when the actually publish a bare bones shit game with the label of early access and when it undersells the devs abandon it with 80% of its features missing.

This explains it. A few weeks ago I was looking at a few games and one of their games caught my interest but when I looked at the publisher and saw that they've got a very similiar game to the one I was interested in I was wondering wether they just reused their game engines and assets all the time to reduce development cost. I was however thinking more along the lines of "they got no game and just try to scam people into buying their almost non existent game". Their vampire game looks just like a reskin of their Yakuza game and vice verse. So their actual plan is to create an engine combine it multiple different skins and see which one gets enough attention to become an actual game and only than start development....
That's really dissapointing since now I think that it's most likely that only one, if any, of those games is going to be actually made...

steam just needs to add a section that is called something like Devtable, where devs can post stuff on this so we as a community can discuss it and give propper feedback if we like it or not , so we dont have fake games and the devs get the info they need. + most gamers are usually verry vocal about things in games they like/dislike so there is a community that is willing to do this stuff , there is just no propper platform.

I think the idea is fine
The problem is filling the store with a bunch of things that won't get made. We already deal with scammers with early access, we don't need more pointless trash filling the store. Regardless if they even make some of these games, there will be numerous that end up on the store and never go anywhere.
At the very least, steam needs to implement a concept section or limit how much a developer/publisher can put on the platform within a given time so they can't just flood it with concepts.

    You need to lookup "leanstartup".
Trying to sell a product before making it is 1000% how to succeed in building a tech product.
While doing so has ethical questions and there have to be some limits, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and it is the correct way to go about building something new.
    It is called validation.
Now --- in the gaming space --- we are an industry defined mostly by passion: the best games are built by gamers who have sought after a specific gameplay for years, and then finally build it.
This is very different than solving a market problem which is where leanstartup comes into play. But it can still work to some degree.
The last question is: even if they validate that XYZ game is the best one to make because they validated the market demand for it --- CAN THEY BUILD IT? Which goes back to the passion issue. Just because they figured out XYZ game is going to be highly demanded, doesnt mean they have the inspiration and gamer background to build the right kind of game that we all want.

Not really fussed to be honest. They've published some decent titles, I'd rather them than certain AAA cash-grabbing publishers out there that I'll not mention. Whilst Playway might be competing with Indie developers, they're also offering alternatives to some long-established titles that have cornered their particular markets.

Even their most popular games ("Crime Scene Cleaner" and "Car Mechanic Sim") dev links go to playway... It feels like they are now the publisher you go to if you want to release some shiddy sim game that probably has ai art and voices.

BTW, this "fake games" producer released in April two games that reach top 1 bestsellers on Steam. One of that games was 5 years in development and was created by a small studio (I estimate 3 people max). You say that "smaller developers" could be impacted by this. Oh, wow, guess what, Playway is a big group of small developers. So I guess that some small developers benefit from that. At least they don't throw years of work for a game that will not be well received.
Steam requires adding playable build before you publish game page. This changed like a half year ago. Playway CEO responded that they did not notice that change because they were already always publishing game pages that had playable build.
Actually, I could go on and on about all the misunderstandings and false statements but everybody likes to just spit hate, so I guess why bother.

I feel part of this definitely falls on Steam and the way they either do or don't filter legitimate games out. I feel like I've seen that Roman game you referenced a few times on Steam, but it might just be one of the several others copy-cat games that exist. I really can't tell. It's gotten a little better over the last few years, but Steam should add a type of filter, like they do with adult content, to prevent "spam titles." No matter what, when Manor Lords comes out on EA, I'm buying that!

At least give PlayWay time until 2023 to release some of the better games and see if they really can come close to all the expectations or if they fail and will be closed 12/2022 (what I do not think so).
