    In this video, I talk about how to make school more enjoyable by turning it into a flow experience. This is intuitive to some people--making school feel like a game--but can be easily broken down into a strategy for enjoyment.
    This video also discusses how teachers can help their students enjoy school more, and how people, in general, can make their lives better with Flow.

      I really do think, that when it gets very difficult, that is when I personally start to enjoy it more and more.
      Try to think of the hard things as a small challenge that come from time to time and let me tell you the moment you succeed on getting the super hard things done ouh man that feeling is indescribable, Good luck!!

    My main problem with school was not the learning aspect, but rather the fact that I did not have control on what people around me are doing. I enjoy learning and being given work to do! However, I am the type of person that can’t tune people out and I get distracted very easily. This made my school experience less enjoyable because I was not able to get as many things done in a school day because I would either get frustrated or distracted by the people around me. This isn’t to negate the facts that you gave in your video, but is instead to provide another argument for why kids might not have the best experience in school. It was a very nice video and you are very well spoken! You will do very well in the future and I wish you the best of luck in what you want to pursue!

    Thanks for the useful video and book recommendation! To summarize for students:
    1. reject grades as a feedback mechanism
    2. set and listen to your own internal heuristic for whether you are achieving goals
    3. separate school time and personal time (you'll enjoy both better)

      I used to until I came into the last year of high school, and in my country, there's a system of boards where basically students are put under immense pressure to produce really, really good grades (the cutoffs for getting into good colleges are insane) so that they can get into good colleges. The whole thing is so ridiculous that I'm kind of a sceptic now.

    I can't wait for this I'm about to start my freshman year of college and after watching your video about mental health along with you other blogs I realized that my school days need to be more than just killing my self with work and then going insane and doing nothing on the weekends until late Sunday night. I need to find a balance. and your videos have not only helped me to realize this but they are also helping guide me to actually doing so! I used to enjoy school but now I feel like it has become synonymous with the feeling of boredom and I don't want that because learning and knowledge is so important and powerful. So thank you so much!

    I also treat school like a game. I always meditate about stuff like for example why I wasted 3 years playing League of Legends and why it was so addicting. And I tried my best to apply the same mechanism in real life. Im also a computer science student in the top college in my country but idk. I was really good at first , very organised , just like you , but it only lasted 1 semester. After that i became lazy ( because idk , everytime I think Im really good at something I just stop and procastinate because i always have the feeling that if Im in top I'll always be on top no matter what - pretty false but hey xd). It's really easy to be organised and reach goals when you're motivated , but when you're in a bad state maybe because of bullying /break-ups /family member deaths , for me , it is impossible. School is so much more , not only grades and learning. Even tho I had good grades , I was always dissapointed that I pretty much didnt talk to anyone while I was in highschool (the last 2 years , 11th/12th grade) and in the long run that also affected my grades/ motivation.

    Wow that gives studying so much more purpose, its so much better than learning just for grades. I know that this will work because for a while now I have been following your daily planning routine (with the schedule, goals and notes) and have been so much more efficient and enjoy doing it, when drawn parallelism with 'flow' technique for school, it only makes sense that it will work out.

    Very good video, it’s very interesting the way you can control your body-mind just by setting some goals and it’s caused by dopamine and the satisfaction that it brings to you to be in constant progress, achieving objectives, etc. It’s very nice when you split a big goal into smaller tasks you each time you complete one of those “easy” tasks, you are liberating dopamine, which will keep you going all the way through until you finally get to the end. Greetings from Mexico! ✌🏻

    I love this! It's a part of school I feel people don't really talk about. Students are smart, but just get discouraged and demotivated over time then end up achieving less than they are capable of. The answer to doing better in school isn't a new study tip or how to organize your files - it's changing the way you think about school. Thanks John Fish!

    It’s actually easier to implement this if you’re learning in an american, european or any school whose final exams are somewhat recognized abroad. In my home country, which is by the way a post-soviet one, the school system is so depleting and ineffective that it absolutely stresses me. Most of the students who do well in school are focusing primarily on it, without taking any extracurriculars or time to themselves. And then, when you want to send your scores of your finals to universities abroad, they ask you to take another exams that are actually qualified. I am actually applying this flow experience currently at school, even though this summer I need to pass my finals. I am taking German, French, learning more maths and physics for university, reading some really good psychology and philosophy books and going to the gym more often. And it is great! So thank you for this wonderful video. It is really appreciated.

    I way I do to enjoy school is studying in a group with friends. We can share our notes and we can teach each other. It's a very fast way to learn instead of trying to do it by yourself. Obviously, that worked for me because I study a career in engineering and my exams are about solving problems or deal with practical situations.

    I found just getting Ds in highschool made it more fun. You still graduate and you have more time to do what makes you happy. Grades are a terrible thing to measure intelligence anyway. You didn't grade how smart I was, you graded how much I cared, and I didn't at the time. It had no real consiquence.

    • @joshywashy3453
      @joshywashy3453 6 років тому +16

      Jon Spitznagel Good luck finding any good college for your major with those grades, unless you were amazing during SATs and ACTs.

    • @aratookacid
      @aratookacid 6 років тому +16

      Not trying to attack you but, practically no one cares in the real world about sat scores, gpa etc. Honestly college is practically useless unless you're pursuing something that requires a degree, or don't know what you want to do with your life as college is a great time to explore different activities.
