Most learners believe they need a teacher to help them speak English. But why? The truth is, the system of learning most people use creates constant doubt, making you feel like you can’t improve without help.
In this video, I’ll explain why this happens using the metaphor of the game Battleship, and I’ll walk you through the 5 stages learners go through when they try to speak with doubt:
Begin with Uncertainty: You might not understand everything you hear and wonder if you sound natural.
Guess What to Say: You think, organize sentences, and sometimes translate.
Try to Communicate: You speak, hoping you don’t say something wrong.
Get Feedback: You wait for corrections, which may come immediately or not at all.
Try to Remember: You attempt to recall corrections for next time. But if doubts persist, you’ll likely repeat mistakes.
This cycle keeps you dependent on someone else for fluency. But what if you could erase your doubts about English before you speak?
I’ll show you how to stop relying on teachers, feel certain when you begin conversations, and take control of your fluency journey. :)

Now, my English listening skills are okay because I can understand you without using subtitles, but the only problem that I struggle with is my confidence and ability to speak without hesitation and translation. I don't know maybe it's because I live in a french-speaking county and it's hard to get out and find friends to practice speaking with all day.

You have trained your listening ability so now it is time to train speaking ability. You spent so many hours listen to teacher, so i think now it is time to spend other many hours repeating every word he says. It's little be difficult compared to listening but yes believe me it works. I think teacher can help us to understand that better maybe in the future videos. Thank you

The battleship is a very popular game in Russia, and actually in the childhood we played it on the paper by painting ships on the paper sheets.

Hi Drew, it’s me again. Could you please confirm what I've learned from your free lessons? As a non-native English speaker, what I need is to get as much comprehensible input as possible. I need to watch different content on a particular topic so that I'll be consuming and acquiring words and phrases naturally, right? I don’t need to learn them on purpose, do I? What about speaking? Shouldn’t I speak until I can fully understand English? When should I start speaking? How many percents of videos do I need to understand? Thanks!

This is simple: erase doubt. The point is not to get as much random “input” as possible, but to systematically get examples that erase your doubts as quickly as possible. Then you feel confident speaking. Click on the link in this video’s description to see how this works in Fluent For Life. :)

Great, but what does listening do then? What would you recommend me to do, if my listening skills are not enough good? And comprehensible input, during Naturally Varied Review is essential? How to erase the doubts in particular words or phrases? Thanks!

@@Fact_know_01by listening, you learn, and erase doubt. :) Watch our recent live videos to see how this works. It’s not complicated. The point is to spend time learning until you know things without a doubt. Then you speak.

Hi. Please explain, what’s the difference between 2 sentences:
    1. It took me quite a while to work out where, and indeed who, I was.
    2. It took me quite a while to recognize where, and indeed who, I was.
