Wow awesome never thought of using polyclay for such a large project before. Just a tip here; if you are using that much clay you might as well buy the big bricks! They usually only come in neutral colours such as black white and some times terra cotta but if you buy white they colour can be easily changed by adding a dab (or more!) of acrylic paint into the uncured clay and mixing it in until you get your desired colour. Its usually cheaper this way and Micheals carries Craft Smart brand polyclay in large brick that works just fine!
I really like this. A lot of other tutorials I watched after this used glass jars or metal cans as bases for the clay, and they were left in, making the clay more of a decoration than the actual structure. Your method allows for a lighter weight finished piece, which is good as I wanted to make lightweight custom pots for my arthritic mom. Plus, I'm a fan of using the cardboard I have on hand over buying extra supplies. I luckily didn't have any trouble with my molds sticking. I have a few guesses as to why that is: My clay was older and very stiff, so it likely had less plasticizer. I also baked it longer (~60 min), as I've read that longer baketimes can provide additional strength. I used a blend of Premo, Sculpey 3, and Souffle. Finally, I had conditioned the clay a bit with some mineral oil - maybe all those factors contributed?
I like how much control you have over how it turns out as compared to when making them out of concrete. Sometimes with concrete, they crack if I remove from the mold too early or the coloring doesn't turn out right, it doesn't turn out smooth enough, I added too much dye, etc. and it takes so long to cure...
Thank you. That is a really good way to make a pot. Only... I'm trying to think of a good sized cardboard cylinder to use. Hmm. All I can think of is an oatmeal container, if it still comes in a cardboard container. I've been thinking of making planters, too. I was thinking of putting a plastic pot INSIDE a planter so the plant can be removed from the planter whenever I want to change it out. I do a lot of gardening and that's what I usually do with plants so the planters don't get damaged when I want to change the plants. But, this works, too. BTW, do you know why clay pots are popular for planting? Because the unfinished clay draws excess moisture away from the plant so you never have to worry about over watering. Aside from not watering enough, over watering is the leading cause of plants dying.
I’m seriously in love with this!!!😍🥰💖💜 It’s so well thought out and gorgeous! I think I’ll have to make a few! Maybe millennial pink with rose gold stands?😉 I’d love to see a diy for some cute polymer clay coasters too.😉👍🏻🍷
I love this! I ordered some clay last night to make some pits with and this has been the best video so far! I'll be making a video for my channel when I do mine too 😊
This DIY looks SO good! I'd like to try it in a video on my UA-cam channel where I'd be sure to fully give you credit by mentioning your video and also linking it! I did want to ask your permission first though 😊❤️ Mine would not be a tutorial of course, just a video of me trying some plant DIY's I've found on UA-cam so I'd encourage them to follow your tutorial if they're wanting to actually learn to do it!
This is totally cool. I think this would work to make a reservoir to make it a self watering pot as well. you should just make it a bit taller and add a wick. I think that would be cool. I dig that pattern too!
I love love love this idea! I've been wanting to make some custom pots for my plants at home (without the need of a kiln etc) so this is super helpful thank you! :D
Making this TODAY! Thank you for this awesome DIY. Even though the project is a little complicated, you explained everything so clearly and well, and my plants and I are excited to give it a shot. =D
Wondering...how is the polymer clay pot & plant doing since this video had aired? I've always wanted to make plant pots but was concerned with the moisture exposure from the soil.
I am not sure but I guess air dry clay shrinks. So cardboard might crack it. Maybe without cardboard could work but it would be hard to stand it or fit pieces like in this project. But if u try let us know. I wonder 😃

Alex Gruspier how many little bricks would you guess is in a big brick? Like if I were to make this project, would I only need one big brick?
@@mackenziedavidson4974 You could make about two to three pots with the big bricks.
omg hero!!
This may be a dumb question but is that clay safe for when the plant is watered or would it get soft and maybe fall apart?
@@chels10902 once you bake it it becomes hard and water proof
Honestly, this is probably one of the COOLEST DIYs I've seen! Very clever!
I agree! This was a super cool DIY. Great job, Chezlin!
This is so cute - and I love how simple with supplies! No fancy molds, just a DIY cardboard template!
This is the best, "I'm broke but want nice things" tutorial. I will definitely be trying this.
I can't help but wonder if buying a pot would be cheaper than buying five blocks of clay?
Awesome tutorial. Best one I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Super cute! It turned out looking very professional looking, like something you could buy from a store
This is awesome, I love that you included a plant stand as well
This is a game changer for all my succulent babies this summer!! Whatta great diy 😁
This is such an in-depth vid. Thanks so much! I’m going to do a self watering pot

Hi! How many blocks of clay did you use? 3 packs of (57g) FIMO clay? Or did you use the cheaper polymer clay (20g) that you can buy from Amazon?
Wow superb clay planter...
Absolutly love this idea!!! Great job.

You did a great job. I want to make a whole set of these.

Super cute! I love the texture. Wish I would've used it in my ceramics class.
I already love it.

This is great! I’ll have to give it a try when I’m in a diy mood. Thanks!
I LOVE THIS!
This was so helpful! Thank you! Just one question, did you varnish it afterwards? If so, what did yo use?
U did a great job
I love love love this idea! I've been wanting to make some custom pots for my plants at home (without the need of a kiln etc) so this is super helpful thank you! :D
Amazing job💜💜💜.
Question: is it waterproof? If yes which clay you used ?
Is the fern still alive? I've always wondered how safe polymer clay is as a planter
It should be ok bc polymer clay turns into a sort of hard plastic when baked
Making this TODAY! Thank you for this awesome DIY. Even though the project is a little complicated, you explained everything so clearly and well, and my plants and I are excited to give it a shot. =D
This is super cute! I love how this came out!
It turned out amazing! Did you waterproof the clay?
This is super cool idea.
This was a great idea! Love the drip tray! Thanks for sharing:)
Nice video!
Plastic wrap, love it for clay, nothing sticks, and it works great for moulds
Love love love this!!!!!

This is so gooooooood! thank you!!!
You have talent keep it up
Did you get the 1/4inch square dowels after rolling out the clay and making the pot?
i used this tutortial to make pots! thank you!
Wondering...how is the polymer clay pot & plant doing since this video had aired? I've always wanted to make plant pots but was concerned with the moisture exposure from the soil.
This is awesome
Your beauty startles me to this day 🥰
groovy! I love it.
ok i definitely have to make this!!
Anyone else scream a QUARTER! every time she said 'a fourth'?
Great planter though 😁
Do you not need to coat the finished planter in something to seal it from water? I'm new to this all lol
This is a great diy video. Thank you.
😍 perfect 😍
Nice!
What a beauty!
It’s so cute
Awesome !
this is pretty dang cool! my only concern is wether the polymer clay will be damaged by water or not.
Polymer clay is waterproof. You definitely can't do this with any type of air drying clay, but polymer clay should be just fine! 😊
@@chezlin so you can't use Cold Porcelain clay to make it? what about if you use a sealer of some kind?(like for wood and other type of sealers)
What brand of polymer clay is this
My daughters clay was horrible to use off of Amazon
Omg so cool
Apparently my "PLEASE BE MY FRIEND" button is shaped exactly like this video
Do the pots break if you drop them?
one could also use air dray clay to make the pot and seal it with a layer of resin. and air dry clay aren't that expensive!
I am not sure but I guess air dry clay shrinks. So cardboard might crack it. Maybe without cardboard could work but it would be hard to stand it or fit pieces like in this project.
But if u try let us know. I wonder 😃
Where do you buy the clay from?
Any update on the plant? :D
how durable is it?
If you were not sure of the cooking time how can you tell when it is ready
