The VG Pacer is such a great car handling’s well pulled great and would beat many V8s owned also a white VG Coupe in the 90s which I swapped 2 318 poly Heads for . Did have some damage near the rear tail light . So repair that and repainted it back in factory white with the black vinyl top . It had mint black trim 245 Hemi 2 Barrel with extractors and cager mags .
And, the introduction of XR resulted in Holden being forced into another “catch up” - extending the wheelbase of the HK series to match the XR Falcon… I think it is fair to say that the 1960s was a golden era for Australian cars, with the competition amongst the “Big 3” delivering measurable improvements to all three cars
Great looking cars, not the malaise crap we got in the states on the same platforms. You were lucky. Amazing what just a hint of tasteful styling touches will do for a bread and butter family sedan
It's so sad how many Australian made cars we lost. Interesting at the height of car manufacturing in Australia almost every major brand had a plant in Australia; Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Multiple car plants in Melbourne in particular. I also remember the Simca plant in Moorabbin.
The Simca Vedette must have been assembled there too, I remember seeing a few (and far between) of them around in my childhood ...although the paint and taillights were _always_ discoloured by the aussie sun
I still remember going to our local Chrysler dealer (Commonwealth Motors) to collect our new VG Valiant Regal. I’d watched the 1970 Bathurst 500 with my Dad and hoped we’d get the Pacer! Still it was a great car and we did many thousands of miles in it on memorable family holidays. Thanks for posting the old commercials which I recall and I still have the brochure with Stirling Moss from the dealership😊
@@indyvignale-wu9qk Great. I used to look after Commonwealth Motors when I worked at Mitsubishi. Dealer code N678. Weird how I remember that stuff 35 plus years later. 😀👍
@@markbehr88 I've seen a video on UA-cam about Norm Beechey , when he was racing the yellow Monaro, and it seems he owned a Chrysler dealership, and was driving a VG Valiant hardtop road car at that time.
Thanks for the memories Mark. I was selling the VG as a young salesman in my Dad's dealership, Flynn and Collins Motors in Brighton and Moorabbin (Victoria). Cheers, Chris Collins.
@@markbehr88 Oh Yeah. There was a base model with some fancy accessories added (vinyl roof, carpets etc.) called the "Stirling Special"and a colour they named "Stirling Silver". Hahaha,if you've paid for the endorsement, you might as well make the most of it.
Thats a worry as I can remember those adds with Stirling Moss. They done quite a run of glossy magazine adds with him also for the VG.They were a very good engine and a revelation at the time.
They really are good engines. To think of the 245 in Dads old VH being 54 years old now , done about 170,000 miles, and the only mechanical parts it's ever needed was a new set of lifters in 1985 , and that wasn't really necessary, they just got a bit ticky. And I gave it a Rollmaster dual row timing chain, which again, wasn't really necessary.
hi Mark, Good Valiant ads, with Sir Stirling Moss, a big race legend, Thanks for these ads I am a big race fan and a fan of Stirling Moss, they were some great race drivers back in the day Jack Brabham, Bill Mclaren , Graham Hill and many more, Catch you soon, take care
I was pulled over in my VC V8 for speeding and the cop 👮🏻 said are you sterling Moss 🤣. Funny thing on my mums side we are connected to Moss 👌. This just family on the VG story my youngest brother had a mint VG Regal in white with alloys and extractors back in the early 80s 🙀she back in time 🤦🏼. One of my brothers had a base model VG in white . My sister had a VG Ute in white for there mechanic business . Power to weight the VG is a great car . Drop a 265 in one with some modes . And they can really hammer . 👌🇦🇺✌️.
Unfortunately the 3 speed Borg Warner 35 auto gave out well before the engine. Like Holden’s Trimatic, it was originally engineered for fours. A shame they didn’t stick with the Torqueflite. It would have been a great combination.
Yes, the BW35 failed in my VG Pacer Hardtop. And when Dad owned my VH sedan , the same thing happened, he got it fixed and it failed again when I owned it about 10 years later. I remember Dad telling me that a mechanic told him that the automatics fitted to VG's and VH's weren't beefy enough, and that they were improved for the VJ model , or maybe even the later VH's ?. Anyway I got hold of a good used BW35 out of a VJ , and its been trouble free , touch wood. Also, I was talking to an Automatic rebuilder a while back , and he said you can rebuild them very strong using the beefier parts that were used in 1980's Falcon BW 45's ( I think that's what theyre called ?) .
I've just been reading, that VG VIP' s that had the Hemi 6 , had specially cast blocks that accepted the 904 Torqueflite , because better quality was expected in a VIP ??. Which makes me wonder, were there Slant six versions of VE and VF VIP's ? , I've never heard of it .
G'day Mark, Great video for sure they really pushed the Hemi. I have watched the VG video once I finish writing my comment I will contact you to make a comment so it doesn't disappear like all my other comments in the past. Cheers Louis Kats 👍
Thanks Louis. Hopefully you can post a comment like this one or if it is a long comment maybe do it in parts as I know it is frustrating when comments disappear. It has happened to me too. 👍
Thanks Mark. As I have said before the Valiant always seemed a bit more "premium" than a Holden or Ford and the "hemi engine" was very good marketing initiative for Chrysler. Not so sure about "Stirling Moss" though? There was no way we would ever have one in our family, even a basic model as my father was 100% Holden and originally came from the bush!
I think what you said about premium was true up until the introduction of the VH. Then quality dropped off and they were no better than the competition imo. Rust problems were a real issue from VH onwards and the Hemi engine wasn't as reliable, or had the mileage longevity of the slant.
@@erroneouscodeI'm not so sure that the Hemi wouldn't do as big a mileage as a Slant , I suppose I'll have to wait and see , if Ive got enough time ahead of me. One thing that I always liked about the Slant 6 , is that they make way less mechanical noise , and idle super smooth, compared to the Hemi .
The Hemi 6 was conceived in the US as a potential truck engine - it was picked up for development in Australia as a successor to the Slant 6, with potential for larger capacity engines. Meanwhile, in the US, the focus was on the V8. I suspect the right decisions about powerplants were made for each market…. in Australia, both Ford and Chrysler relied on 6 cylinder engines, while Holden’s “small” 253CID V8 never attained the same level of popularity. Indeed, it is arguable the decision to go V8 caused problems for GM-H in the early 1980s, as their 3.3 liter 6 cylinder was no match for the Ford 6 cylinder powered cars.
Compare these with today's arty, farty ads which tell you nothing about the actual car. One ad from a couple of years ago showed closeups of a woman's teeth followed by some mean dance moves........but nothing technical or detailed like fifty years ago. We've truly declined.
