  • As a trained political scientist, I am breaking down the FOUR primary subfields of political science in the U.S.: American politics, International relations, Comparative politics, and Political theory. I also go into about 5 other subfields of interest you can consider. Of interest to you UNF students is PublicAdministration. UNF even offers a Master's degree in Public Admin!
    Knowledge is power, so knowing the range of your discipline is important for making the most of your college experience!

    Wow, I just found your channel and feel so lucky. I am a first-generation college student with a BA in political science and one year left in a public admin master's program. It has been my long term goal to get my Ph.D. and study comparative politics and your videos are helping me solidify that is really what I want to do! Thank you for spending the time to create this channel!

    Is studying quantitative method & formal theory is compulsory??

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  3 роки тому +1

      The safest answer I can give is: "It depends on the program." However I would say most U.S. programs are going to have a quant component and a theory component. What that looks like might vary. For example, some programs may require actual math classes specific to the discipline. Others might let you slide with gend ed math but they want you to take some econ classes. Now, if you go for a B.S. in polic sci, you should definitely expect more math. For theory, again it depends. They might have you do early political thought, or an IR theory class, depends on your concentration. Some departments have more theory than others. A lot of departments expect teachers to weave theory into their coursework anyway. I know this isn't super helpful but....it depends!

    Hello doctor this is my first year to attend college and I did change my major from CSCD to Political science. What you think about majoring in political science (Arabic) international relations with women's & gender studies (Minor).

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  3 роки тому

      Ummm, that sounds AMAZING! There will be so much easy overlap with electives that it shouldn't be hard and anything you can do to provide yourself specialization like that beyond just a straight PoliSci major will help you be more marketable moving forward. There are so many scholarships and cool awards for the study of Arabic and Arabic-speaking countries, and there's such a push now in IR for focusing on gener issues whether it's in the security sector, development, economics, etc. I approve!

    Hello Dr. Maiden. How can you integrate political science with psychology. What is the best pathway. Thank you.

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  3 роки тому +1

      There are sooo many ways to do this. There is actually a whole subfield of political science called political psychology. You can get deep into psychology if you're interested in political experiments, voting behavior, international relations, if you like qual methods like interviews and focus groups. There's a lot you can do. Just like I imagine there are who subfields of psychology that would be dealing with political issues or government issues. Imagine how important is is for trained psychologists of all fields to know the ins and outs of government/criminal justice or just how many avenues open to working in the psychology field AND for local government. So many of my friends double majored in these two and have cool interdisciplinary jobs.

    How can comparative politics aid in international relations?

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  Рік тому +1

      CP is a subfield of political science, just like IR. In some cases, like at my university, they combine them into a joint track. So students can do a major with a concentration in CP/IR. That just means they want to take more internaionally oriented classes, rather than prelaw and American politics classes. Comparative politics is its whole on subfield within the disciplie with its own core set of canon, methods, research design. The way we think about questions is unique to our field, the way we explore case studies, etc. IR, similarly, is it's own respected subfield. There can be much overlap. I am a first field comparativist, second field IR. I see more space for the kind of qualitative ethnographic work I do being more acceptable in CP compared to IR, but that would depend on who you ask and your specialization within IR. There are plenty of qual scholars in IR too. Not sure I'm helping, haha!

    I have a BS in Econ and doing a MA in Philosophy of Science, am I "eligible" for a PhD in Poli Sci?

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  2 роки тому +1

      It is always possible to transition into a PhD in political science, its all about your narrative and how you tell the story of your previous experiences to make it clear why political science is the right fit moving forward. Also, it matters what subfields you're trying to pursue and how those build on your current expertise.

    thank you sooo much! you explained this so well, i am planning on majoring in international relations. what would be the best minor for it? and i speak 5 languages! i plan on working for the US government which is involves protecting the country and making peace with other countries

    • @DrEmilyMaiden
      @DrEmilyMaiden  3 роки тому

      They sky is the limit when it comes to minors. You can really pick whatever interests you. If you love economics, get an econ minor. If you like French do a French minor. A lot of people doing an IR focus might try to do a minor in area studies, so like Poli Sci major and Asian Studies minor. But you really can get creative. I've seen people pair Poli Sci with just about everything--anthro, biology, languages, area studies, engineering, education, music.

      Many people consider PA to be it's own distinct field. In fact, in many universities the departments are separate. It has a whole separate track from the BA/BS to PhD level. We have a joint department at UNF of Political Science and PA. It's definitely an important component of a political science education, but it's not always considered as a core subfield of political science. There's certainly debate.
