Hi I have a MPA and thinking about getting my PhD in Polisci. Thank you for this video. I didn't know much about PhD programs until this. I'm going to go for the PhD! Wish my luck!
Thank you so much for this video, I love poli-sci and I after getting my Bachelor's in it, I applied straight for the Ph.D to see how far I could go and I got in... While I am happy that I can take this step, I am so scared about all of these elements and feel like I am waaay in over my head, especially getting funding and how to do research.
Thank you Dr. Maiden! This is extremely helpful for me who is currently going through interviews for political science PhD programs! Would love to hear more about your research experiences!
Great! Once the semester is better under control with everything shifting to online, I plan to do a video series all about fieldwork and my experiences! Let me know if there is something specific you would want to know about.
Thank you for sharing this. Listening to you break it down was really beneficial. I just graduated with an MA in 'Diplomacy and International Relations' and was wondering if you could talk about the difference between a PhD in International Relations versus one in Political Science. I have heard that if you want to teach at a university it's better to do the latter. Also, if you could talk a little bit about transferring credits from a Master's program to a PhD program and how that affects the length of a PhD. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you once again!
This is awesome! Rather than give a loooong comment here, I'll make videos with this content coming your way soon! Check back in the next couple weeks and I'll answer these questions for you!
Dr. Emily, this is exactly what I wanted to know and without any assistance or prompt you actually answered a lot on my plate. So thank you for your time explaining. It was educating. However, I have many more questions as I am on the verge of beginning my PHD program this Fall in US. Would it be possible to hear from you more and if so kindly let me know how. Thanks again for educating me on the journey.
Sure! If you've got specific questions you want answered, you could leave them here and if I'm able to make a video about them, I'd be happy to! I'm always willing to craft content that viewers are looking for, so let me know what burning questions you've got and if I can make it into a video I'll do it!
This was very helpful. I’m about halfway through my coursework towards an IR Ph.D. What are your thoughts on pre-doc /ABD fellowships? I’m in the DC national security policy/strategy arena, but want to leave open the option for a career in academia down the road (at least part-time). Thanks!
Thank you, Dr. Maiden! I'm currently a MA student in International Affairs at a small program and I want to get a PhD when I finish. It's obvious how different MA and PhD programs are, but your video helped me gain a better perspective of what I should expect. What advice could you give about the application process?
The personal statement will be key for positioning all your interests and telling the reviewer in a concise way that you are prepared for PhD level work, you've thought strategically about why that program is a good fit, the kind of research you want to do, and which faculty in the department you would most like to work with. You want to come across as organized, professional, and clued in to that specific department and why it's the best fit for you. Good luck!
You might also find this relevant! It's not directly related to your question, but I go into the importance of shaping your narrative and making it all make sense: ua-cam.com/video/wCPLSYU5xSU/v-deo.html
Hello Dr. Maiden, thank you for the very informative video. I would like to know if taking the GRE test is compulsory for PhD in Politics in the U.S.? I am a South Asian. Thank you.
Dr. I so much appreciate u for ur guide towards PhD in pol.science. MSC. In Human security & Counter terrorism studies. Planning for my PhD in same specialisation, but lack financial capability. Any advice? Thanks.
Most PhD programs in the U.S. are paid. There may not be much pay, but it would include tution and a small stipend. What financial assistance do you need otherwise? I've made some videos about finding money in grad school including this one: ua-cam.com/video/2nC-RHSl584/v-deo.html
Ma'am do they consider non regular degrees while PhD admissions in the US ? The syllabus and everything is same and the difference is that we take classes on weekends instead of regular 5-6 day classes.
Hmm, I think that would depend on the type of degree you have. If it's still a BA or an MA, you just completed the coursework over a longer period and only on the weekends, that is still a BA. Most MA programs have night-only options for taking the actual coursework. As long as you have a BA or MA or whatever credential is required by the office of admissions for the university you are applying to, you should be fine. They don't need to know and they don't care when/how you did the classes, as long as you did them from some kind of legitimate/accredited program. Does this answer your question?
Thank you very much for this.its really valuable .love from 🇱🇰.give me some advice for this.I have done 4 year special degree in international studies .please let me know can i apply for phd in usa for political science ?.and what is the procedure ?
There are definitely ways you can make it work, it would be all about how you pitch the narrative when you apply. I've known PhD students in political science who had undergrad degrees in English, Philosophy, Biology, Pre-Med. You can definitely make a case for why that early training is relevant and how it will inform the work you want to do in your PhD program
Aww great Mam 🥰👌 i am pursuing my Master's in political science in India and i am in my final year ..Mam if i join PhD in political science in usa what i have to study in this 4 years and what job opportunities usa provide me after having PhD in political science or M.A political science ...kindly answer Mam 😍🥰
Well, if you have your PhD and are looking at staying in academia, then I would encourage you to join the APSA ejobs portal so you can access job announcements at US institutions. Outside of academia, there would obviously be opportunities in research consortiums, think tanks, possibly government or NGOs. It depends on what your specialization is. Best of luck!
Ma'am how should I start my preparation for PhD in political science for abroad? I am actually in my first year of my masters programme in Delhi university ( India )..and really I dont have any little bit idea about that? Where should I get best colleges for phd? Will you please answer me for these queries?
Most PhD programs in the U.S. are paid programs. So you would not only get your tuition paid for, but yould receive a small stipend as well. Depending on where you go to school, this stiped might be difficult to live on. Imagine, for example, living on the stipend in a major/expensive city like Chicago vs a smaller college town. Even as an international student, you are also allowed to take the funds/tuition. There would be a process of securing your visa and the university you choose would have all those policies in place and help you navigate that process. When it comes to picking the right PhD program for you, that's a much more difficult question to answer. At the level of the PhD, the university matters less than the program. You need to pick the right program that will have your specialities/faculty mentors available. Your dream might be to go to the University of Chicago, but do they have faculty that are experts in the subfield you want to join? You need to pick a program that has the mentors in place doing what you want to do/researching what you want to research. The last thing you want as someone who wants to specialize in International Relations is go to a university where the political science program is known for specializing in American politics. You need to pick a great program with a strong IR track. Does this make sense? Department over university always when it comes to applying for a PhD!
Thank you so much for this! As a first-gen student, videos like these are invaluable to me.
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck to you!
