    I realize this video is 3 years old, but I just bought one of these machines yesterday, when my old "better" machine broke in the midst of sewing gifts for Christmas. You did a great demonstration of the ability of this machine to handle heavy fabrics, and I like how you explained the needles and the entire process, so thank you! Much appreciated.

    You did a great job explaining about the tension discs and how important they are when not only sewing but also threading. One small suggestion: since you are, obviously, instructing beginners, show and remind them to have some material or piece of paper under the needle when taking it out so it doesn't fall down inside the machine; it can get lost.

    Thank you for making the denim sewing review that you promised to do (in your first video). It was nice to see it so soon during this hectic season. Double thank you for explaining about upper threading with the presser foot up. It was explained well.

    I’m about to buy the brother machine. From what you’ve shown, it looks like a lot of the bad reviews are user problems. The info about the discs in the first threading slot is so important. Also, I’m sure a lot of people don’t know about putting the needle in and dropping the presser foot before beginning to sew.
    I also would bet they put the bobbin in with the thread going in the wrong direction.
    It’s a lot of little things, but they make all the difference. Thanks for all your info. 😎❤️

    I'm liking your video on this machine, I'm researching it before I buy it. As an aside, I watched another youtuber sew 8 layers of denim with the needle that was already in the machine, and it was like a knife through butter. I was wondering if you could make a video explaining the different threads. I had no idea that there was thread other than cotton and nylon. *Who knew?*

    I do have a question, how do you stabilize the back end of the sewing machine? Mine jumps & move & I find that very frustrating. Thank you. Mary

    • @Sewintoitlessons
      @Sewintoitlessons  5 років тому

      Hi, Mary! Hmm, I’m not sure of ways to hold it down.
      There are some things that I know will cause a machine to move around. 1) if you’ve had it for a while, it may need to be serviced. Machines can run rough when it needs a tune up and cleaning. 2) you may need to sew on a more sturdy surface. I’ve had a folding utility table for a sewing table and my machine would make the whole table vibrate. I’ve used a portable folding craft table and that would vibrate whenever I sewed fast. Now, I sew on a table that is solid heavy wood, so I don’t have those issues anymore. I hope that helps.

    • @hummingbirdlady11
      @hummingbirdlady11 5 років тому

      Laree is on target about a good solid sewing table which is a priority so need that first. 2nd is a sewing mat. I got mine online from Walmart. www.walmart.com/ip/Sewing-Machine-Mat-15-5-x-18-25/41291395

    I am having trouble with the upper thread not bringing up thru the hole the lower bobbin thread. I can't sew anything is there a special way? I looked through the instruction booklet but I can't seem to find what I am doing wrong.

    • @Sewintoitlessons
      @Sewintoitlessons  5 років тому +1

      Hi Gracie! I got on my machine and tried a few things to see if there is anything I could do to keep the bobbin shuttle from rotating (the rotating allows the upper thread to catch the bottom thread). The only thing I found is that turning the handwheel away from me instead of toward me will keep it from rotating. The other thing that can keep the shuttle from turning is a build up of lint or thread in the bobbin case. I hope that helps!

      @@Sewintoitlessons TY, I will try that. It's a new machine given to me as a secret santa for Christmas. I don't have the receipt she doesn't either. • @hummingbirdlady11
      @hummingbirdlady11 5 років тому +3

      The LX3817 has the very nice Quick-Set bobbin feature (page 16 in the manual). When the thread is drawn through the slit on the left of the bobbin then trimmed with the cutter inset at the end of the slit the bobbin thread is NOT to be drawn up through the needle hole. The bobbin thread is ready to go so just start sewing. This is a nice feature on such an inexpensive model. Trouble is a lot of people don't understand it.

    Wonderful video!!!I never used a regular sewing machine so far,just a mini one which only has 2 stiches with no reverse. Now I started being interested in doing some projects for my 3 kids,and I am thinking of buying the Brother LX3817G,which has slightly better reviews than LX3817.Honestly,I never knew there are different sizes of sewing needles.Now,looking at this video,I am getting a bit scared.I definitely do not want a fancier machine,as I hate everything with a million buttons, touch screen and so on.
    Does anyone know anything about Singer M1000 Mend and Sew machine?
    Trying to decide between the Brother LX3817G and the Singer one.Looking into a non sophisticated machine with a few stiches and a reverse button that will last a few good years.
    Thank you.

      Hi! I'm so glad you are leveling up your sewing, but don't get overwhelmed! 😊
      Just FYI, one of my sewing students made a blanket from t-shirts on a mini sewing machine. She thought it was broken, however, until we changed the needle.
      If you are on Instagram, find me at @sewintoitlesons. I have some charts that list what needle to use for which fabrics to make it easy. You can save them, screenshot them, or follow the tagged accounts to Pinterest.
      I have not tried the Singer machines you listed here, but one major difference between the Brother LX3817 and the G seems to be the automatic needle threader. But, the most important thing will be to choose the one you will feel comfortable with.
      Lastly, you may find this playlist helpful!

    Hi I'm getting into sewing, I am working on a project with my daughter and nieces to make Abayas we will be working with jersey fabric. My question is do you recommend this sewing machine for beginners? Also we are on a budget and need 2 machines please and thank you.

    • @Sewintoitlessons
      @Sewintoitlessons  5 років тому

      Bren Sanchez hi!
      I think this is a good machine for beginners. Since you plan to sew knits, I would suggest using stretchable thread and sewing with a straight stitch on this machine. You can use a zigzag stitch, but I have found that it can make my seams look wavy or puckered. Using stretchable thread, a straight stitch, and a jersey knit needle is a good combination for straight, flat seams on this machine.
      About machine prices, you can get a refurbished machine for a really good price. I’ll leave links to some here. I’ll leave a link to the thread as well. I’ve also left links to information explaining the different kinds of sewing machine needles in the description of this video.
      Have a great time sewing with your family!

      Vanesa Williams, hi!
      So, you are sewing a square on top of another piece of fabric?
      The pivot method really helps when sewing corners. In my latest video I showed my little student how to pivot while sewing. You can check it out here 👉🏾 ua-cam.com/video/mCF8bYC5nqw/v-deo.html
      I showed her how to use it on a curved edge, but the technique applies to anything your are sewing and you want to change direction without taking the fabric off of the machine. Let me know if this is helpful!
