I don't understand the panic. A milder more virulent version of covid is a good thing. It infecting people will lead to greater resistance and could reduce how well the older strains can grab hold. Usually you don't get 2 virusses at once cause it would make them compete. The more virulent one will likely win. If anything, this new varient us a positive developement. And it will help unvaccinated people more protected.

The fact that is highly transmittable is not a bad thing. It just means it beats the other variants out -- a weaker form of the virus -- because as you said, you cannot contract multiple SARS-CoV-2 viruses

What you don't know is this variant was actually detected on a delegation that is not named that had visited Southern Africa. You are not containing anything by banning flights from Southern Africa because it was actually brought there by some foreigners.
The new variant has already turned up in people in other parts of the world.
Wait until the end of this week and you will see how widespread it is.
I believe its more to slow the spread to other countries to understand it better and maybe prepare differently. We all know its widespread. :)
