  • So the most important factors in my use case:
8 PCIe slots as I use 8 PCIe cards after merging two systems to one. This is what made hunting for an equivalent so difficult.
5U Footprint. Takes significantly less space, energy, peripherals and cables than before. Simplify!
Tons of ram: 384GB or more - futureproofed for large samples sets with up to 1.5TB of ram.
Triple 4K. Need to watch all the cat videos on the internetz.
SILENCE. This is an audio & music production environment. No Computer Noise. Period.
macOS. This is the ecosystem I use for the foreseeable future as I use specific Apple-only apps & need to be compatible with all my clients in the production pipeline.

You make the best point in one phrase "I don't have time to tinker". In my case I have purchased a Mac Pro specifically to prevent myself from wasting time working on the computer itself. And honestly a close second to that is that the Mac Pro is near silent. It's practically impossible to find a computer of this power that is this quiet.

When they do come out with a Apple AXXX Mac Pro the chipset will have been running macOS / Unix for some time. After all Apple has run IOS / Unix, iPadOS / Unix for years on AXXX chipsets. The thing about the Mac Pro is that it's become just a straight-up status symbol in our nerdy tech world. It's like "I can afford this super expensive machine, therefor I am successful, and you all are just lowly bottom feeders", which really brings out the ego-based (and more likely jealousy-based) argumentation on social media. I got mine for exactly the same reason you did... being able to harness a million little pieces into a single unit that just works and allows me to get through the day without a lot of grief. I never showed it off on social media (except for in one very specific professional tech-based group, as part of a larger discussion about how adept the mac mini is for mixing large film projects) because I didn't want to attract scrutiny or people chastising me for spending my money this way. You did it like a champ however, and in the process helped a lot of folks make sense of it, like me! Kudos to you, good sir.

So madi is wider digital pipeline - you can think of it like adat optical, but 64ch vs 8 (@48k) and you can also span insane lengths (like a mile or more!).
I use it to route logic into the MTRX (192ch total) and also to get all my analog synths into the system from dedicated converters. Also use it coming from the computer to feed the same converters to get automation control back to the synthesizers.
I will do a deep dive on this stuff - I’ve just been slammed lately.

What is the isolation index of your fridge? and power per degree ratio? have you tried replacing the compresor so that food cools 20% faster? Do you even care? What would you do if your fridge, stopped working randomly once every so often and you had to throw away food. It's a little bit like that for mac users, you might not have the perfect fridge but as long as it does it's job it fine. When you have more budget, you just buy a better fridge or the newer model of your current fridge

@@ignacymat Sure, there are many appliances in the house. My guess is that hackintosh is a bit like an oven. A place to experiment and try new recipes, but need to look after. Pc in this analogy would probably like a Tv, a dime a dozen and can build up to be huge entertainment systems. The analogy is actually the time and effort you put into these appliances vs the acceptable tolerance level. All appliances can have problems. But failing sometimes, or having to keep an eye on it is less acceptable for a fridge. Fridges we just expect them to be plugged and run. But I understand you

Just to chime in about threaripper for audio:
Low latency performance with threadripper is crippled. Culprit may be because it's more than one die. You actually lose performance when you use threaripper with low buffer sizes, which in return is crucial for scoring work if you play things by yourself. This same occurence can be seen on dual cpu systems.
There is also magical number of 32. If you go over 32 Threads kontakt can't balance the load properly anymore for some reason. This also causes odd performance issues, and kontakt is basically must have for work that Neil does. I can't comment how EW Play handles stuff, but I know it's slow and poorly optimized so I don't have high hopes it performing better.

I assume you do backups and the like, but how quickly could you recover from the loss of your Mac? Let's say one of the surrounding pieces of kit caught fire and destroyed it and the other components of the rack. Or perhaps a mouse got inside and pissed all over the mainboard. How quickly could Apple and the suppliers of your add-in cards supply you with replacements? If your work is time-critical and you can afford it, it might be a good idea to have a whole Mac Pro plus cards as a spare sitting at home. The loss of your studio is another level I hope you've also considered.

That point is idiotic. Are there some who just have a hateboner for Apple? Yes, you find that in every community, but a great deal of the criticism isn't just "I hate this just because". It's far more substantial. Such as the reparability point, Apple fails pretty hard when it comes to repair. When I'm looking into a computer system, one the first things I look at is reparability. You'd be surprised how many issues can be resolved simply by swapping out the RAM. The main reason why the new Mac Pro is so much better than the trash can is just the flexibility afforded by making damn near everything use standard ports and slots.
When I saw that "trash can" mac pro, my thoughts were "oh, look at this poser" but when I see this new cheesegrater, I have more respect for the people who buy it.

No one would say your setup does not work but a lot PCs can have 8 PCIe slots as seen in the video link below. There is nothing significant about a 5 RU rackmount case. Most PC are 4 RU or less. Wouldn't dual Xeons be a good spec to have? One spec I would have preferred to see on the Mac Pro is the RAM, CPU and PCIe slot be on the same side of the motherboard. Having them on the opposite sides makes your Mac Pro bigger than it needs to be. .

The reason why PC and Mac users talk together like that is because you and your working case is so far removed from the usual points of contention than PC and Mac users cause to clash than what they've previously known. :) The other thing is, the average PC or Mac user is not going to watch your videos because it's not related to their own use case.
For your specific scenario, the new MacPro fits like a glove but only because of the mac-specific programs you use. So in reality, the hardware was never being challenged due to software requirements. The fact that you had to wait that long for a proper machine to show up, and that you were more or less forced to use the inconveniences that came with trashcan Mac in itself is testament to how little Apple understood the industrial needs back then. They just did their "true and tried approach" of "style first, substance later" which they got so used to over the years. As a former Mac user, I find this saddening.
I am glad that they finally picked up the gauntlet again and conjured up a machine that is worthy of the name "MacPro" again and I'm glad that professionals like you get the correct tool for the job again. We can only hope that you are not going to miss out in the future because of all the Apple Silicon ruckus and the requirement for dual-support (x86 and ARM). Apple had at least the understanding to still provide MacOS support for the old Macpros prior to the Trashcan too, because those were (and still are) in use.
So again, the challenge you put out was never about hardware, it was about software :) The only reason to get a new Macpro is to venture on with the Apple-speciifc software and proper performance. And for that, the new MacPro is worth it (also because you as a user are smart enough to make the upgrades yourself and basically only buy the baseline model. That saves you a lot of money too and due to the choice of the upgrades you get more performance out of it too). Outside of Apple specific software, the Macpro is not worth it's money as you can even achieve similar levels of stability and ease of use with Windows 10. Just like the MacPro is not intended for the ordinary user, a properly configured Windows10 workhorse is also not maintained by the ordinary user :) And I say that despite greatly disliking Windows 10.
What I really want in the future is working software that is it's own bootloading operating systems. Basically no need to run an OS around it, only the main requirements for the program to run. This will greatly improve performance and the OS becomes irrelevant. I still think we're not going to see that for 10 years to come though... which is sad. Someone should start kicking in that door.
I very much appreciate the content that you put out about the Macpro, but your grounded attitude towards the entire hodgepodge around it, and the insights you provide into the actual working mechanisms of certain industries was MUCH more worth it. I am glad youtube recommended me your channel because of the Macpro. Because I found something and someone much more valuable than just another MacPro walk-and-talk :) I found a relatable person with reasonable requirements. Keep on rocking, Mr. Parfitt :)

Only if you’re not in the music tech scape:
Also we do see dedicated software a ton in the audio landscape - embedded systems that only do what they’re designed to do, don’t crash and boot in seconds - it’s in everything from synthesizers, mixers, processing equipment etc. this is also why I can turn on a digital synth from 1986 and it still works. And thankfully, communication standards are still completely supported so they can be used! Unlike,.. pretty much any software and computer older than 10 years, and even then, only if those online license activation servers still even exist. Ughhh.

@@NeilParfittMusic My bad, I should've clarified that I meant DAWs specifically :) Or just any edit/work intensive software like video editing / 3d animation / 3d sculpting / basically everything CAD / and so on. The digital synths, multieffect pocessors, modular audio world and such are more the likes of firmware specifically tailored to the cause.
That is why in terms of performance you have ASIC > FPGA > ARM > x86 when it comes to doing one specific thing because you exactly know that one thing it needs to do and craft the firmware an software around it. The broader you get (up to x86) the more horsepower you need to compensate for the many hoops you have to jump through, but it has the advantage that it "runs everything". As for communication standards, I am desperately looking forward to midi 2.0 ... and you? :)
I am personally looking at XMOS chips for creating a hardware solution for a prototype that I want to make for showcasing a proof of concept to get funds to get it into proper FPGA / ASIC manufacturing.
And yes that constant online need is getting out of hand quickly. Especially with all the subscription based stuff where you do not even have the OPTION to be offline. I'm all for piracy protection and the like, so I'm all for hardware dongles that serve that purpose just fine. Which is another thing the MacPro thought about with that internal USB slot. Too bad that one dongle isn't enough :D
Same goes for unfinished software that is being pushed out. The gaming industry is by far not the only area where this happens all the time.
      "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"
I can only hope that people are continued to be fed up and require a better product that they spend their money on. I'm curiously following the ongoing development of the Reaper DAW which already has a Linux native client too. It's slim, lightweight and gets more and more upgrades. In time, when it's midi capabilities are good enough, I might even switch from Cubase. One-time purchase model. Same thing I like with Davinci Resolve. Buy once, keep forever.
But it doesn't help with small working individuals. They don't have the necessary impact. It's people like you who have the necessary curriculum and acumen to be a representative voice, backed up by many individuals to push for a change. I understand that certain programs are just industry standard, like AVID carved out for example. The problem is that they stopped pushing the envelope and stopped trying to be the best software solution to justify the pricetag. They intentionally stagnate for customer dependancy. This is the reason Adobe is slipping, intel got their butt handed to them by AMD and Avid is more and more often regarded as a necessary kludge that you just have to live with.
In any event, thanks for a random piece of inspiration on your Westworld scoring competition video. I haven't listened to the tracks, only your opinion on it, and how uniqueness sells because playing it safe is a trend that ceases to be commercially viable. Drafting a mystical, spooky but fun piece of score. Thanks man :)
