    Anything that has more than one step is not an action, it's a project. And you can't 'do' a project, but if you're clear on the next action, then that's what you focus on. This is the factor that differentiates a good to-do list and a bad one. Have a great day!

    I feel like these types of to-do lists are manageable for personal life. At work, where I manage products and have several projects going, I go through a whole different flow. I spend 30 min on Monday setting goals and tasks for the week to achieve my quarterly goals and ultimately yearly goals. I prioritize what must get done this week and then log any new action items from meetings/ requests. Every morning I look through and quickly reprioritize the day if something urgent came up the day before. This has been working for me for years.

    I've adapted a variation on this for my own TTD list; it's not quite the same, but close. And it's already made a difference. Took me a week to start setting it up; after that, I've (re)started on three long-dormant tasks that I've had tucked away for a while - one of them for well over a year. Thanks!

  • @bunbacheso

    Would you consider doing a whole video on automation? Someone below suggested it, too. Idk if this makes sense, but I understand the surface level concept of automation based on what you said in this video, and I've learned about some specific stuff like templates and Notion integrations from your other videos. However, I'm having a hard time connecting my conceptual understanding of automation to my practical understanding of it. This is especially true when it comes to figuring out what to automate and if certain tasks actually aren't worth it due to the time and energy required. Plus, it seems like the 4 Ds you described in this video can apply to either one-time tasks or recurring tasks, while automation can only apply to recurring tasks. That made it a bit of a challenge, for me, to see how it fits into something like processing your to-do list on a weekly basis.

    Hey Thomas, great work!
    Really liked the video! A non-joke commentary, for a change. One addition I would do to the flow chart, that is specifically important for code development, is the cost of automation. I know you already have repeatable tasks in mind, but I really think adding something like "Is this task recurrent enough to automate?" would be neat! Hope you get your 6-digit book deal!

    Ohhh that’s what I’m missing
    The specific time to process my inbox
    I should do that
    Also i need to use templates more
    Other learnings: think about things to do that have net benefit instead of just any small benefit
    If it doesn’t have enough benefit, think about alternatives you could be doing instead
    Edit: I feel like sometimes we get stuck in thinking we could be doing something very important instead of a small errand but doing the small errand is necessary and better than doing nothing

    We just have to accept we are only going to complete a few of them, so they need to be the more important ones. When I was a music student I spent a lot of time in the music library (yes, real books and LP recordings, 1970). I would walk thru the aisles of books ("stacks"), entire sections of just the works of Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, and so on. They had no access to what we call technology. Just paper, pen, and a small keyboard instrument, or just their mind to imagine the sounds. They outperformed anyone living today, yet we have technology. Tchaikovsky is a good example of creativity. When he was a boy his governess (he was from aristocratic background) taught him the discipline of scheduling his day, and keeping to it without exception. So, as he grew up he would compose for a set number of hours each day, take lunch, dinner, and after dinner entertainment with friends. When he completed his Sleeping Beauty ballet he said: "My arms have raised a mountain", referring the months of work sitting at his piano and writing down the notes on its music stand. Without his commitment to discipline it would not have happened.

    I found urgency/importance not great as a metric for planning. I use focus and discipline instead. Tasks that require a high level of focus or/and discipline take priority. For example, I may have 3-5 tasks with a comparable level of urgency, but I will work on them in an order that takes into account that my ability to focus (and exercise discipline) is limited.

    Yes, That is really important to find out what is really important and urgent to do. I try your tips. But The one problem is that Automation. I can't understand how I use that tool to solve problem.
    Do=Find important task.
    Delay= It is excuse not do any important task.
    Delegate= Manage time.
    Automation=🤔 ?.
    Delete= Those work which has no benefit.

    The video was pretty punchy and high energy.. dense but not overwhelming.. I like it..

    You seem to have changed the atmosphere of your video. It's more friendly and interactive and humorous compared to the previous vids last year - too serious and too focused on making the vids more shiny that it forgot about the audiences.
    Anyway, thank you for this DDADD Method. I would definitely try this one with my Overwhelming To Do list. Exactly what i need at the moment... Cheers Frank.

    Thanks for the video! Great, as always. And very close to my personal beliefs. My only concern, which is more about GTD itself rather than the video, is that if you follow GTD idea accurately, you end up being a person who does under-two-minute tasks the whole day. So the very first question I ask myself is 'Will it ever pop up again or has it already?'. If so, I delay for the sake of automation 🙃

    Automation definitely belongs there as a separate category, especially with so much technology available to help us work better.

    Very nice vid, packed with info, well done. Do you have any suggestions for a cross platform (Windows and Android) To Do list application that is a low friction way to get things added and manage?
