@@semilumi if that is the case then they would have send it to podcastage first because he's a great mic reviewer. Unless he doesn't live close to the studio.
@@HenryTheBoilermaker3rdYear Ok. I don't know the relationships of these people, or if G&H Studios are also friends with Podcastage. I just assumed G&H Studios was the friend Mike is refering to in the video, and also sound engineer on the TV shows mentioned and not affiliated with DPA. I am also assuming the purpose of lending the gear for tests is not commercial interest but proffesional interest or "fun". :)
High end boost might also be useful for if it is inside a blimp with a fuzzy cover on it. Fuzzy covers and blimps filter high frequency so it may primarily be there simply to compensate for blimps and maintain its "ruler flat" frequency response. As a VO artist you probably don't have to concern yourself with blimps since most of your work is done in a booth, but it's something sound engineers have to consider, and a high end boost could save them extra post production work.
In videography, a lot of people shoot in "Flat" settings so they can color the videos the way they like. Love that there are mic's that do the same thing.
DPA got their start making test microphones (they were known as B&K back then). Ruler flat response, and very wide frequency response, and no noise, (literally, their noise floor is only a couple db above the theoretical limit). They have taken that knowledge and are now producing microphones for recording and live production. These are the most accurate mics you can buy, and you pay dearly for that. I like how they work with your voice, But honestly I'm not sure it is worth the cost over the Sennheiser.
DPA is more boomy and muddy, 416 is much more clear. 416 is just a better mic even tho it might seem sibilant, 416 just might seem sibilant at a times but it is never sibilant.
@@distortingjack Yeah that's what I noticed too, but MKH has a presence boost, so it's not necessarily a result of it being lower in quality. DPA does sound better though, it kind of sounds clearer even though it has less presence.
Awesome as always, I like the sound of the DPA, though I couldn’t afford that. :) FYI, E100s is in MassDrop again today. If I wasn’t so worried about their QC issues I’d pick one up.
I'm with you , mate. Everything we change in a microphone, if it's got high pass or low pass it will be heard in the headphones not on UA-cam! It's like describing a beer or wine! Only if you taste it, right!
Greatings from Germany! It is a MKH 416, not MHK ... I'm using a MKH 415. The only difference is the kind of Powering. My 415 is powered by 12V "Tonaderspeisung" and it sounds like in 1961 ...
I use my Audio Technica AT875R shotgun for onsite recording producing my short films. Nowadays, it's also my VO mic, because my AT2020 is out on loan. I'm liking your MHK 416.
Great review. I'm debating between these two mics. The MKH 416 has the sound our ears are used to hearing. But to me the 4018 has more 'definition'. Would've liked to hear more comparisons between the two at a slightly further distance. Thanks for the useful video.
Hey Mike, love your voice and it sounds fantastic on the mkh416 and it sounds like a dream on the 4018. I'm wondering what you thought after hearing your own video. The 4018 sounds clearly more clear and I'm wondering why you're not using it regularly now.... I mean I know it's expensive but this is your profession. I might be likely to sell some of the others and buy this...
The high-end on the 416 has always been unpleasant to me. I think it was ok back when we were recording to tape, and it helped vocals push forward, but with modern recording equipment, it just seems out of date.
It would be extremely helpful to me (and others) to see you review mike stands/booms, and how to best arrange them for reading copy! Do you ever suspend any equipment from the ceiling?
Hmm... I recently watched a video by a production sound mixer where you got mentioned. I bet it's his microphone! ;) I've actually used the sibling to the DPA4018, DPA4017b short shotgun, a bit and it's really nice. It did however have some trouble with one female voice with sharp "S"s. Great video as always! Keep it up!
Simon Nordberg I sent him the mic and I'm a boom operator. The DPA 4017B is my favorite microphone! Amazing reach and off axis rejection for such a light mic. I use it on location work for my UA-cam channel. DPA mics are awesome!

i think the bass is uncomparably tighter, better and clearer for your voice - makes the Senny sound like cheap perfume! Un fortunately watching this damn video gonna cost me a small fortune - if I can find a dealer!
To be honest, there is a slight difference. Then it starts to get bigger and then it even get bigger. DPA 4018 captures sound and voice like a real hooman :)

Hi Mike: Great job as usual. I would be interested to hear what your have to say about the Mojave microphones specifically the MA 50, the MA 201 FET and the MA 200 tube.
We hosted a DPA demo recently. I use Mojave MA 201 FETs for my drum overheads. They put two 4018s over the drums it completely blew away the Mojaves. You could almost mic the entire kit with two 4018s. The Mojaves sounded like AM Radio compared to the 4018s.

Dpa vs neumann please please im fixing to purchase the dpa but really want it compared to the neumann. May have an re320 i would be willing to send you if you needed it for comparisons.
Wow. Great review! That thing is incredible. The 416 is so overrated. If I needed something tiny and couldn't afford a Sphere L22, I'd be seriously looking at the 4018. The DPA addresses everything I don't like about the 416. It has depth and detail that the 416 kills. If you can't hear a MAJOR difference, keep listening! But, since the Sphere can give me a hyper-cardioid pattern with the sound of an M49 or a Telefunken 215, I can't see scraping pennies for this one!
Wish you could test some high end gaming headset mics, like sennheiser Gamer zero, would be interesting to hear the difference in mic quality using your voice.
Btw. If you want to check out some other hi end microphones, go to www.schoeps.de/showroom/. They've got this interactive showroom where you can listen to many of their microphones with different sound sources from different distances.
You need to study your topic (and actually look closely at the frequency response in the spec sheet) before you put up these reviews. Regarding the HF boost switch being a boost above 5kHz? The frequency response actually ramps up gradually by about 5dB from about 2KHz-8kHz where it peaks, then rolls off again. Duh! - you actually supplied us with the graph where this is self-evident. Also, a lot of what you talk about would be 101 for most people watching this kind of overview of a high-end mic. I think we know about the utility of presence boost and bass roll-off. The money, as it were, is in how good is off-axis colouration, side rejection, self-noise and the general timbre of the mic. Such things can be demonstrated, which is what one would hope for in this. Quote: "I don't have a lot of information". Well, we heard your voice through the mic, so that's a plus at least. The rest could be gleaned from inspecting the DPA spec sheet. So I must agree with your self-assessment. Thanks anyway.
