    Some more trivia concerning Smith-9th Street.:
    1. Not only is it the highest station, it's the only one where the platform crosses a body of water.
    2. The station, despite it's great height, didn't even get escalators until the mid 1970's!
    3. Though popularly called the Culver Viaduct, it's actually a misnomer. Its proper name is the IND Smith Street viaduct, and the segment of the line from Bergen Street to Church Avenue is the IND Smith Street line. The actual Culver line starts south of Church Avenue, and that segment to Coney Island is the oldest segment of the F line, being completed by the BRT (later BMT) in 1919 to Avenue X, and to Coney Island in 1920.

      I didn't know that it didn't get escalators until the '70s. That's wild. I can't imagine walking up all of those steps.

      @@MysticTransit Growing up there in the 60s, there was not much ADA awareness in general nor was there a sense of "extras". We just dealt with the stairs. It was part of the deal for entering or exiting the station. Back then money was tight, in general, as well. Most times we took the B75 to relatives in Park Slope. Other times the train. And if things were tight, we walked it. If my father wasn't working, it was a car ride. And back then it was all R1-R9 cars.

    I have, like many other people, been to this station. I loved it! It was very scenic. It was pretty cool how we had to use stairs and two sets of escalators to get down. I wonder how many stations are taller than this. Definitely above ground level, but maybe not above sea level

      Fulton Center has been on my list since the beginning of this series. The issue with that is the number of lines that pass through the station, it isn't just the (A/C/J/Z/2/3/4/5), but also the (1/E/R/W) & PATH.
      There's like 15 different stations in one there. That would be a huge project, same goes for some other transit hubs, like Grand Central, Times Square, and Atlantic Avenue.

    Great video! A couple of weeks ago there was a F train stalled on the Culver line and my F train ran express from Jay St to Kings Highway! We passed through this stop and 4th Ave at a pretty decent speed. I'm impressed with all the improvements they've done to this line it's literally one of the fastest. Definitely faster than the B train.

    Wow what a coincidence that you did this video when you did. I live in Flushing Queens even though I've been up here at my mothers in New Hampshire for the last 2 years because of covid. Anyway I was back in New York a month ago just to clean my apartment and take a refresher class for my job through refresher class was postponed today so I figured what can I do considering I have a girlfriend in North Carolina who never saw or has been to New York City I decide to take a couple of pictures of Manhattan for her. Went to Smith and 9th Street and snap several pictures both of Manhattan Brooklyn and even the curve to Carroll Street.
    Sadly this is the only station left on the entire system where one can get a good picture of Manhattan. The upper level of Queensboro Plaza on the 7 and N lines used to be great too but that's all been hemmed in by new high-rise Construction in Long Island City which is starting to look more like a Manhattan neighborhood than a Queen's one.

    You picked a nice day to take the video. Lived near the Avenue P station for two years. Always been in favor of express F service on the four track underground section of the line. Additionally, there should be some express service on the three track above ground section of the Culver Line. It should be similar to 7-Flushing express and local service on that line, as it has three tracks. At least have express trains during rush hours on the three track Culver Line with the express ending at Kings Highway.

This means the Brooklyn Queens Expressway runs from the Verrazano Bridge all the way to the Triboro Bridge used by M60sbs BxM5-11 buses. The correct name for the route is IND Crosstown Line because the BMT built the Culver Line, the section south of Church Ave, connection to B35 bus to 4th Avenue 36th Street. The connecting ramp was a 1950s build. Your idea is going to work. Basically, the F train ends up being Queens Brooklyn Express local Manhattan. @@MysticTransit Please, please explain why any community would easily give up direct train service to Manhattan at 4 minutes between trains, and opt instead for a G-train that does not travel to Manhattan at all, and operates as you admit at 8-9 minutes between trains? What community any where actually chooses slower, less direct, and less frequent service? About half of the F-trains Brooklyn ridership exists from Bergen Street to Church Avenue, now why should the more populated section of the line get the less frequent service? Now go to any community board of a well to do area, and try to explain to them just why you want to give them less frequent, non-direct service. Good luck with that. You do remember how L-train riders almost lost their freaking minds concerning the repairing of the 14th Street Tunnel?

    This is one of my favorite NYC subways stations! In fact, I been dreaming on thoughts which should have been done to make the Culver line more interesting. For example, this station should be considered as an express-stop station with two express platforms on the wide flat concrete places. Additionally, between Church Avenue and Avenue X, both local and express service could continue with the elevated line being changed from triple track to quadruple track - and make Avenue X be another stop be converted into an express stop. With all this said, I thought all G trains in both would make all local stops between Bergen Street and not Church Avenue alone, but be extended to Avenue X as the new destination stop, meanwhile all F trains in both directions run express not only between Bergen Street and Church, but also between Church Avenue, 18th Avenue, Kings Highway, and Avenue X with the existing elevated track route be fully quadruple track. And then between from Avenue X and Coney Island, it runs double track.

      While I would love to see this become an Express station, and express service continue down the BMT Culver Line, it would be way too expensive to implement. I think just the simple reopening of Bergen St (LL) would allow us to run Express service properly.
      Also, I'm not really sure if the demand is there for express service on the BMT Culver Line. If you want a faster trip, the Sea Beach Line is relatively close by, and you can always take the train to Coney Island and take the West End, Sea Beach, or Brighton Lines.

    The funny thing is the people in Park Slope in the 1970's had both The F Local (which usually ran with R-1 R-4 & R-9 Subway Cars) & The F Express, (which ran with R-40 Slant Subway Cars) along with the G Crosstown Local to Church Ave, and they still complained with all of that service.

    • @michaelsherrell6389
      @michaelsherrell6389 2 роки тому

      You wonder why the riders complained? By your own statements you note that the local stations (half of the BrooklynF-train's ridership is between Bergen Street and Church Avenue, it has been way for decades) serving the most riders were served by the non-air-conditioned trains, while the fewer riders further down the line get the air-conditioned trains. The G train does not go to Manhattan where the great majority of the riders want to go. There riders would hold the doors on the F-trains so that folks could race down the stairs at Bergen Street delaying trains. The folks in Park Slope were not stupid, and did not like the bad subway service, so they enacted changes. And they had, and still have the wealth and political connections to make sure there needs are met. Some eager Transit Fans for decades have proposed and dreamed about F express trains, and foam at the thought of using every set of express tracks that exist. The tough part is trying to convince a community (a wealthy and politically connected also) that they should accept inferior transit service when they do not have to. Good luck with that.

    • @amazing50000

      @@michaelsherrell6389 So because they got the non-air conditioned trains (R1-9) stopping at their stations they complained? Sounds like jealousy to me. Why did they feel in the 1970's that they needed the air conditioned trains (R 40 Slant) that ran express from & to Coney Island when the people from Coney Island needed them more do to the longer ride than Park Slope residents who were only 7 local stops away from Manhattan? Because there were fewer riders past Church Ave? The non-air conditioned trains (R1-9) went to and from Coney Island or Kings Highway too as locals along with the expresses (R40 slant) to Church Ave. So it is not like they were the only ones dealing with the older rolling stock.

      @@amazing50000 This is not that difficult. What would you as a large well to do community with money, power and influence want - a) old slow not frequent trains that are non air-conditioned that not take you where you want to (Central Manhattan) in the case of the G/GG trains or old slow trains not frequent F-trains of the R1-9 vintage, or B) the newer modern air-conditioned trains that that come every 4 minutes during the highest ridership periods in the high ridership areas. It was not that long ago that L-train riders lost their collective minds at the thought of a service shut-down to repair the 14th Street Tunnel, something that had been discussed for 1-3 years in community boards and forums before hand.

    • @amazing50000
      @amazing50000 2 роки тому

      @@michaelsherrell6389 Listen, The people in Park Slope at the time were not the only ones with high ridership at the time OK. Other communities at the time with high ridership also had to deal with slow, non air conditioned trains, especially on the IRT lines. So once again, yes you are right, the Park Slope community did use their money, power and influence, which is why I said it was out of pure jealousy, because any official with sense at the time knows that you do not put the old slow non-air conditioned trains on a route (F Express) that is going a longer distance when there are newer trains that can run on that route. As far as frequency, that was the MTA fault at the time because like I said the F Local & F Express lines had their own sets of trains at the time.

    I've seen a type of escalator-elevator where an enclosed compartment with a flat floor runs diagonally along an escalator...perhaps this could be installed? It would mean losing an escalator and it would require enough height.

      The #1 train has to travel to the Bronx, which is at a much lower elevation, and the deep stations allow for that passage. The A train which does not travel to the Bronx for this readon was built closer to the street level. Notice that the neighborhood is called Washjngton Heights, and Inwood Heights, that is for a reason.
