  • CBTC is the key to better service in the NYC Subway System. Flawless service, without delays can only be achieved if the new CBTC Signaling System is more widely installed across the network.

As a Bronx resident, I think the Concourse, Jerome, Broadway, White Plains, Dyre Branch, and Pelham Lines should get CBTC because:
1: The 4 needs to fix its overnight timing and same being said for all the other lines except for the 6
And 2: Not knowing what time those trains might come, you know it will be a 15-20 min gap. Sometimes you might get lucky and catch a 5 minute train.

Another thing is definitely gonna happen is the Thrid Avenue Elevated line. Maybe they will bring the R62AS on the 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line. 63rd Street (21st Street-Queensbridge to 57th Street-6th Avenue)

Queens Boulevard East (Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike to Jamaica-179th Street/Jamaica Center) - Union Turnpike to 179th Street is slated for 2026 completion
    Future CBTC Projects:

Broadway/7th Avenue (Jackson Avenue to South Ferry/Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center)
Broadway (57th Street-7th Avenue to DeKalb Avenue VIA Bridge/Tunnel)
Fulton Street (Jay Street-MetroTech to Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard)
Rockways (Rockaway Boulevard to Mott Avenue-Far Rockaway/Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street)

IRT will still be messed up until Rogers Junction gets uncluttered. CBTC doesn’t look like it will fix the mess down there. And I think any CBTC on the main line IRT (1,2,3,4,5,6) will require a full wholesale change to R262 for the three borough lines and the 1 and 6 getting the R142 fitted with CBTC, unless it’s too far down the line then it might be more beneficial to retire the R142’s as well with R262’s replacing the entire old fleet.

Why spend money converting a (by that time) 28-30 year old subway car that has a fleet of 1,000+ cars when you can just replace them with new subway cars. The R142A's would be much cheaper to convert since there are 200+ cars that are left that were not converted into R188s and it's much easier since Kawasaki is still around. Bombardier is now a part of Alstom and I doubt they would want to deal with the R142s. The R142s would have to be rebuilt from the ground up since they are their own problem (they are reliable) but it took them almost a decade to get them to work right. A conversion like the R188 would be like putting lipstick on a pig esp if someone like CRRC does the R142 conversion.

How about BMT Broadway 4th ave IND 6th and 8th lines IRT West and Eastside lines. One thing that the MTA can explore is putting CBTC overlaid on ETCS Level 1 this is what Manila LRT Line 1 is using with CAF Elmira Mexico trains. That way there's increased frequency. Here's another thing to consider during the late evening D trains are still running express on 6th ave together with F train with a D train being 15-20 min behind the first one. If CBTC Current Thales/Siemens or the CBTC overlaid on ETCS Level 1 that will actually speed up the D train in the late night service pattern Making the gap being 3-5 minutes from the first train to the 2nd train. The old railcars would need new and modern airbrakes, electric, and electronic components to be installed underneath the car chassis, thus costing the rapid transit owners extra money. Rapid transit or subway cars do not have plumbing. Commuter railroads such as Amtrak, Long Island Rail road (LIRR), and Metro North, have plumbing parts only for the sinks and probably the commodes in the lavatories. I agree with the lines that should get the CBTC equipment next, but what I disagree with is the time it takes to install the system. Literally only working nights and weekends prolongs the work to upgrade, and time is of the essence. If anything, what they should do to minimize construction times and headaches is to close some lines for three months at a time. This gives crews room to rip out the old system, install the new CBTC system, and also do other work to keep the stations and tunnels in shape as well. You could probably shave months off the schedule. Yeah its going to be a full closure, but the system is upgraded sooner and less intensive work will happen in the future.

I think we can only do a full closure on certain lines. Lines like the Crosstown, Fulton, and 63rd St Line can have a full closure, because there are alternatives for travel, and they aren't extremely crowded lines.

The (1), while it does use older cars, wasn't mentioned because I didn't think it needs CBTC at the moment.

Oh, it's only something that's been around all over the world for over a quarter of a century and we're still installing it in nyc, the greatest city in the world. Yeah okay.

Honestly none. It’s too much trouble for what it’s worth. IMHO it’s a waste.

Except that there's NO EXPRESS SERVICE, NO 24/7/365 SERVICE, NO FLAT FARE, and although minor, no FORWARD VIEW which would be of great assistance in helping new riders locate certain landmarks that'll allow them to make determinations as to which stop would be best for them at a particular time. Without the forward view (ESPECIALLY when one can be easily provided), such equipment is closer to being an overglorified freight car....

Of all the mass transits I have taken, the NYC subway is unfortunately the worst I’ve experienced. Dirty, confusing and in some cases dangerous. NYC could do better…

Try riding some damned BUS in Los Angeles; the NYC subway system would be considered PARADISE by comparison!
