7:30/ Loved that you acknowledged the most commissioned artworks of any station! Just one bug-a-boo.... the mezzanine connecting the N/R Lines to the Times Square Shuttle has the coolest artwork in the whole system. All you had to do was turn the camera up and you'll see a full length Roy Lichtenstein pop art mural! It sits just below the glass tiled sidewalk above you.

That's what destroys me. How in one subway can there be a royal station and the next station a garbage dump that looks like after the apocalypse? This exactly characterizes the contrast of the social state of the country. There are areas like Beverly Hills and a garbage dump nearby that even the police are afraid to enter. Rich people and people in power are so greedy that they only think about how to make more money, instead of thinking about how to take care of the people at whose expense they make this money. A typical situation for a capitalist system that leads to the self-destruction of human society.

Notice the lack of trash cans at the Oculus, but it’s still so clean. I heard it’s to prevent someone from putting nefarious devices in the cans and causing harm. They put in extra work to keep it clean and safe.

There’s no trash cans outside the 9/11 Memorial for the same reason. Sad that you have to think of that, but if we didn’t have to think of that, there wouldn’t be a 9/11 Memorial in the first place.

In the UK all train stations and bus stations don't have bins for this reason.
I was in Oculus a few months ago and was very impressed - less so, though, by the human turd I found in the lift in the station.

Careful some of those doors that say keep out and stuff actually contain homeless camps and some people who seriously want to remain hidden. I think the old knickerbocker door was welded shut sometime ago. I know that a few doors lead to old clubs and things that are forgotten about. One lead to old ballroom from the early 20s while the building was demolished the ballroom was forgotten about underground.

The Spanish-style station house for the East 180th Street Station in The Bronx has the coolest old-school history to it. Before being strictly for the IRT#2/5 trains, this structure also served the long-gone NEW YORK, WESTCHESTER, & BOSTON RAILROAD. Essentially, it was the Metro-North of the early 20th Century. It even has an extra platform with a functional track bed that occasionally holds full 10-car passenger trains on weekends! That extra platform once served the NY,W,&B for nearly 25 years.

These look fantastic! If this were London there'd be ad-boards all over those art installations. The urge to cover a walkway with a huge advertising wraparound is too much to resist on the Underground! The relatively new Elizabeth Line has less advertising in your face but it is probably too minimalist, could do with some colour like this. At least I know where the diagonal lifts came from!

Literary the 72nd st station was the first ever subway station I’ve been to and I was soooo surprised by how deep it is since I’m from Miami, we don’t have those since we’re by sea level and I was tripping on like how far down it goes lol

Let me tell you why most subways stinks. It’s due to a lack of funding in order to clean it up. And by then most mayors didn’t pay particular attention to the rise of homeless, crimes and littering so they often find excuses for these issues when it’s a combination of sheer laziness, lack of motivation and the lack of experience in trying to deal with these issues. Money was always an issue when it comes to spending on a list of certain things of little importance. The misuse of funds on policing is one of the issues with housing, job development, building reinforcement, subway reconstruction, drug and alcohol rehabilitation of the homeless and street people, crime reduction, and the establishment of legitimate healthcare and communities. The past mayors have dealt with health and credibility issues of their own.

They only upgrade/update the stations where gentrification happens and where tourists go like Penn Station..
