  • It can be hard to let go of the past when you're living in a home that holds so many memories. Sofie is here to help as she prepares many family homes for a great sale.
Want to watch more mega marathons on our channel? Watch them here: bit.ly/3GskYjv
The Unsellables - From Season 1 Episode 19 "Catherine": In spite of its great location, fair price, and more than seventy showings, Catherine’s spacious family home has been languishing on the market for three whole months. Catherine is stumped… But Sofie isn’t. She says the property looks as though it was last decorated when shoulder pads and leg warmers were in style. The retro 80s décor has got to go, she says.
From Season 1 Episode 20 "Adam and Christina": Not your average suburban couple, Adam and Christina’s edgy and spacious three-bedroom back-split has been on the market for four months… And in spite of the fair price and eight open houses, they haven’t received a single offer. Sofie says the ultra-modern décor and funky furnishings are at odds with buyers’ expectations. And since the market is softening, they’ll have to pull out all the stops.
From Season 1 Episode 21 "Kristina": House poor with more space than she needs, Kristina listed her three-storey, three-bedroom detached home three months ago. And although the interiors are immaculate, she hasn’t received a single offer since. Kristina is perplexed… But Sofie says the property’s ramshackle exterior, rusty fixtures, and overgrown hedge are the problem.
The Unsellables - After tracking down the most unsightly and ‘unsellable’ listings on the market, The Unsellables team attempts to transform real estate lemons into lemonade. Can the fearless crew get these desperate homeowners to get smart, let go of the past, and prepare for a sale?"

What Anthony didn’t mention: When you remove wall to wall carpet, there is usually a space between the bottom of the baseboards and the floor. This space is usually concealed with quarter round that bridges this gap and hides any uneven cuts where the hardwood flooring meets the bottom of the wall. It also slows down drafts at the floor. Adding quarter round is not terribly difficult, but it does require patience to measure, cut and fit the joints, corners and open ends.

Honestly buyers need to start looking over the furniture. The furniture is not theirs and it's for the color they can always repaint. They need to look at the bones of the house the structure. I can understand painting, especially in this case and maybe take some furniture out and put it in storage.

Having worked on 0roperty management for 25 years, I can tell you that most people lack creative visualization skills. They can't visualize their furniture placement etc even in vacant units. You have to really help them. That's why realtors tell you to depersonalize your home as .much as possible

All the houses look amazing after however I find it difficult every time solid wood gets painted, especially house 2 on it's exterior, the wooden details on the outside reminded me of Europe and I would love a house with features like that on the outside.

This is actually one of the better Refreshes that I've seen here!
In regards to Catherine's home :
Well done , considering what it looked like on the " Before ", I just think the Master Bedroom needed a sitting chair , to help it feel cozy.
The mirror across from the dining table, great Feng Shui on that .
The outside of her home was so lovely, the curb appeal certainly made a difference!

As immaculately kept as the place was, I wouldn’t be surprised if she isn’t already living with him. These shows like to add drama. I just watched another one where the (previous) owner wrote in the comment that at the time of the show (12 years ago), she & her husband (at the time) had been separated for 6 months, but the show producers had them on as if they were still a couple & getting ready to travel the world together. In reality, they divorced soon after.

2nd house was so cold looking with all that grey before. They should have painted the dining room a soft cream or beige as leaving it grey looks cold & bad. In the kitchen Anthony should have moved the refrigerator over & put the lower cabinets back to where the were probable originally were. Then he could have still had the breakfast bar in the corner with floating shelves above. Leaving the refrigerator where it’s at make the kitchen boxy & small. On the porch they should have put a colorful planter of flowers between the chairs to add color outside

That house was uncluttered, clean and neat. This show portrays house shoppers as so limited in imagination, they can't see beyond
paint colors, furniture that is out of scale or just not decorated to their liking.
    edit: remarks for 1st house
    2nd house basically the same..
v clean, neat but again, not the norm in decor

So far I’m on house #1. I came to comments b-c I couldn’t understand why it didn’t sell. It’s a lovely, clean home. No clutter anywhere. I wouldn’t like the paint colors for me, but goodness, that wouldn’t keep me from choosing that house. I haven’t seen the transformation, yet. I’m sure it’s lovely, but I really didn’t see anything wrong with it before. Kitchen cabinets maybe “dated,” but they looked to be in immaculate condition. At least from the first look. I’m only at the beginning of the show.

I actually love the color in the bedroom, but I will admit that it's a very personal color and needs to be a neutral color to sell. I would adore that color in my bedroom now and use fabric in Boho print and some old gold decor here and there. I realize this was many years ago (2008?) and it's now 2023, so it's interesting to see how styles have changed since then.

I dont understand how the furniture/appliances are supposed to affect the buyer's decision. Unless the sale is all-in ( includes furnitures, fixtures and appliances), the buyer should just look at the structure from top to bottom, make sure the roof and ceiling are in good condition, the walls and floors are stable. Remain blind to the color. Repainting is easy. Interior designing is the buyer's prerogative.

It is a nice house. It needs updated, but it is a nice house, people should’ve bought it anyway. They probably would’ve excepted a low offer.

    • @catlady9123

That's what we looked for when we bought a house. Something that hadn't been updated because the purchase price would be lower. Our house was verrrry 70's when we moved in in 2014, but due to lack of cosmetic updates and such (important things like siding, roof, water heater, etc were replaced as needed), the pricing was insanely low.
The first year we did a lot of purely cosmetic work like repainting, changing light fixtures, flooring (ourselves), a few windows, bedroom/bathroom doors. We did whatever we could paying cash and ourselves so saving interest and contractor fees.
We saved a ton vs paying $100+k more for a turn key ready house with interest over 30 years (honestly the only other house that interested us that was on the market at the time was $320k more, that's a HUGE difference in mortgage payments). The way we saw it, is we could put $2000 more a month x 360 on a mortgage payment for a "pretty house" or we could put that $2000 a month in investments and other wants and reno when needed.

the interior looks old fashion boring and cheap. Maybe thats the reason. Do the buyers buy the furniture? In Germany all market houses free of furnitures.
My house was total empty, because I liked my furnitures and they were extra biological. Most people dont estimate that.
my house was sold emitatly and for my price.

    People are clowns.
If you did not bought the house just because of basic paintwork, furniture arrangement and color then you are not very smart. Most houses are partially renovated after being sold, so...
What matters is the size of the house, the location, the layout, windows and doors, good state of the roof and the state preservation of the floor.
The wall colors and furniture is irrelevant.

Where should she be rude? She only did her job. I guess here in Germany we are used more to such kind of advises, but I think she wasn't rude at all?
I wonder how she should tell the homeowners what needs to be done, if simply telling is meant to be rude? How would you tell someone who called you for helping, if advises are rude? I'm really confused what you feel is rude? 🤔
