From what I understood in the bts of the video, Josh and Julia knew the plan all along because they’ve discussed it with Moira and Jason. They said yes not because they wanted to do their closure, it just so happened that the song is quite close to what they are going through at that time and maybe they wanted the opportunity of working together and have some time to maybe talk about what happened to them while they are together during the process of making this music video. The part where they talk to each other, I think is not originally in the script, but during taping they we’re already thinking about the last scene and maybe the director or moira or jason or whoever it is suggested that what if they just talk to each other, without a script. They actually agreed on it, but as it is being taped, the crew was kind enough to give them some privacy as they start their conversation and only the director and the cameraman was left inside the church. So it is not a song written for their closure, it was just an opportunity for them to face each other and say what they want to say. I believe they agreed to do this because first, it is work and they are professional actors. Second, despite what happened between them, they still continue to respect and care for each other so turning down the role because it might be awkward just doesn’t make sense.The whole point of the song is to choose to forgive and be happy even if it means setting someone free.
