Western Maryland Scenic 1309 8-21-22

A group of us from the Williams Grove Railroad traveled to ride behind Western Maryland Scenics ex-C&O 2-6-6-2 #1309. We rode the open car and had a fantastic time! On this day she is wearing a New York Central 6 chime passenger whistle.

I was there to witness history being made at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. It was the first time they began using the 6 chime whistle through November. My friend Grant and I chased it from Cumberland to Frostburg. I knew that they were getting their guest whistle prepared for this.
My friend rode in 1309s cab on August 19 and I rode in its cab on August 20.

I grew up along the 21:00 stretch of the journey in the video. It’s been a while since steam hit those rails but you can hear the locomotives from 3 to 4 miles and would alway zoom up up the hill through the woods to the trail and see it go by. Such fascinating marvels of engineering.
