I’m glad that you demonstrated how much is a “little” water. Many tutorials here on UA-cam just say it but do not actually show the amount. Thanks for that. It assures me that I have been going in the right direction when it comes to winter watering. Peace.

My first winter with a lot of cacti and I had to move most of them out to the poly.. I bought a few translucent boxes from Dunnes and keep them in those, in the poly. Thanks for stressing in several of your videos NOT to water while over wintering in the poly. Such a relief to have good info from an expert. Many thanks, Lynn. I did have to cut back my Cylindrica Sanseveria as they were touching the walls of the boxes and rotted. Amazed to see how they recover by closing the top of its stem. When I know its going to freeze, I bring the boxes into my utility room which is unheated at 8°C lowest. Thanks again , Lynn.

Excellent information... I have noticed shrinking too, its mostly my Gymnocalycium which are very prone to shrinking during the winter so I give them a little sip of water, but I do house all my cactus indoors so they dry out a bit more. My room is a similar temperature to your grow room in your video. Great video Lyn, enjoyed! 😁🌵🌵🌵👍🏻

Very good video, Lyn. I also water some of my shriveled cacti during winter because our winter is mild compared to other places and our humidity level is always very low. Thanks Lyn, great video and very helpful. Although you've told us a few times on your channel about holding back watering in winter, this elaboration on the topic taught me another thing or four that I didn't know yet and was really helpful. As someone else commented, it was great to see you demonstrating the amount of water you give too. It's a slow process to learn from experience and a painful process if it means losing plants along the way, so I'm very grateful to be able to learn from the knowledge that you built over the past 2.5 decades!! And super helpful for me that you have the Irish climate... I wish you and Hans and your plants good strong vibes to get through the 'Siberian weather' that they predict for the coming 4 days. @@desertplantsofavalon Yes Lyn, it's kind of a delicate balance. If the arms of the medusoid Plants are shriveled, it's probably best to give a little drink. Just a spot of water. If not , they will lose arms. I lost my Flanaganii to dry rot. Reason unknown. It didn't turn black or brown, just soft like too dry. When I pulled on it , it came out too easy. Cut back the dying tissue. And I am now trying to root the remaining head. Not much success yet. But these are hard to root if cut in the middle of the stem. Easy if cut as a cutting from the main plant. So yes , go ahead and give a little. Just think, just a little longer and spring will spring to life!!! Have a great day Lyn!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🏵🌴🌺🪴🌹🌲🌷🌳😃👍

A small sip of water on a late, sunny winter's day is unlikely to do much harm if it's clear that the cactus is badly shrivelling and losing size. The roots are always efficient at picking up the small amount of moisture given.
Generally, I water my cacti the same way as you do. Bone dry from (November to January), with the first sip in February or March dependent on the recent weather and the visual condition of the plant. Northerlies and easterly winds have kept the temperatures below average here since Christmas with very low spells of sun. So I am not expecting any plants to break out of dormancy at this stage.
In contrast to last year, I had new spines and flower buds on several of my plants becouse it was much sunnier and warmer. I am hoping by late February to begin rolling back dormancy measures if the weather has improved. So far there is little sign of that. Winter in Somerset is still very much in charge. Thanks again!.

Very interesting video Lyn👌😊. I do the same as you do because here in the mediterranean coast my gymnos don't rest very much in winter and although I have them outdoors (under roof), they receive plenty of sun and wind that dry them very much. That makes necessary for me to water once or twice during winter as long as I see that we have mild temperature. But everyone has to consider their circumstances to decide if it's necessary to water their plants. Love from Spain 😘💕🌵☮️🌺

Another point to consider is how much light your plant is getting. If you have your plants in a warm room with low light, which can happen especially for the first few months of winter, you need to be very careful about watering. You want to give them enough to reduce shriveling, but not enough to start them growing. If they start growing under low light, you will get etiolation, that is thin, unhealthy growth. This can be prevented by hanging grow lights above your plants.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому

So very true indeed Emmit :-D etiolation is so common in high heat and low light, grow lights can really help at this time of year with the low light levels, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday today XXXX

Thanks for clarifying about cacti care in winter :) I have two little cacti now, a domino and ferocactus. I guess what I was confused on was whether shriveling (and using up water reserves) meant that the cactus was not really dormant. I have them in my basement that drops down sometimes to about 13 C (57F) at lowest, but to get it any lower Id have to open a window. So I was never sure if my cacti were actually fully dormant. I've only been giving them a little bit of water once a month.

Hey, thank you for the information!
I have my cacti in our yurt. They get some daylight but not much, mostly artificial light. In the winter at night the temperatures get down to about 10°C because we're sleeping and unable to feed the wood stove, but during the day it gets up to 20-25°C when we are able to feed the stove. Although when both of us are away at work, it will stay at 8-10°C during the day and it only warms up in the evening when we get back home.
So given the wild temperature fluctuations, should I give my shriveled cacti some water or wait till late March?

    • @desertplantsofavalon

WOW at 30c thats a heatwave haha :-D but luckily Cacti can adapt to both low and high temps in Winter :-D I would definitely give your Bunny ears a good drink now if its at 30C

How much light do cacti need over winter? It will be my first winter with my small collection of cacti and I am wondering where to overwinter them. I am in Canada if that helps

Hi Nat :-D the good news is cacti can manage with much less light in the Winter months when they are resting, if you have a bright window or location this will be perfect for them, it doesn't have to be a sunny window as long as it is bright, if you are overwintering them inside of a room away from a bright window then you can use a LED plant grow light over the cacti that is left on for around 5-6 hours a day in Winter, if you can overwinter them cool and dry and bright this is the perfect overwintering, thanks so much Nat for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Canada for a wonderful Tuesday XXXX

I recieved a cutting from a ebay seller and its been growing crazy not sure of what it is(succulent) but the tips keep bending over limp. Should I be worried. Should I do something? Its in my bay window 70 degree inside about 20 degree outside.

Hi there, it can be difficult to say because it can depend on the type of succulent it is as there are thousands of different types, and many need different care requirements, but here is a link to a website on the Succulent ID of many of the most popular Succulents: wwwSuccGuide.com XXXXX

Yeah just killed one of my rare ones by accident. Wish I would have watched this vid first. My San Pedro loves water in winter but only 4 5 inch wide ones do from what I can tell
