  • Win some, loose some as they say but it seems odd that the one that shouldn't have made it did, and the other one that was always 'iffy' is doing fine.

Hi Roger, as I mentioned in an earlier video - the key issue was the removal of all the candles. The sphagnum moss should have been okay. Pines need candle mass to build the roots first. Only once you have a strong root structure can you safely start working the candles etc. i have lost several recovered Scots Pine for the very same reason. Take Anders advice - you may be surprised.

I'll just leave it where it is - and make sure it doesn't go completely dry. Personally, I don't think there is any life there.

@@RogersGardenandBonsai I think you are right but I have had a few surprise resurrections in my time. Not people obviously :)

I made the same mistake with one of my collected Scott's pine. Trying to save it, but not sure it can be. I Left the candles on the other one and it's doing fine.

Maybe your Pine is just pining for the fjords *LOL*, I need to watch that sketch again. Absolutely loving it. As much as your reference made me laugh, it is sad to see that pine so beraft of life. Well, lesson learned for next time. Glad to see the other one is doing okay.

Just too few roots for the size of the tree - and the constant heat hasn't helped.

    Noooooooo
I wish id gotten to consume your upload BEFORE i stripped the needles off of all of mine 🤦‍♀️
I planted a dozen long leaf pines in the yard - watched them ALL turn brown… rationalized that if i took the needles, the energy would be directed towards the roots
    🥺

This could have been a good Bonsai in a few years - but it's often the way with collected material - the shock and root disturbance/loss is too much for them.

Not to fret, it most likely has good karma!

Haha, if i hadn’t nailed it there it would have muscled up to those bars and vroom… did you pull it to look at the roots? I would have though spagnum would have been a good choice…

My brother said to leave my pines for at least two seasons before I do anything to them

That would depend on what happens in the first season and how good the roots were to start with. The other one collected at the same time (earlier this year) has put on good growth and will be styled next year but will stay in the same pot for another year before the roots are disturbed.
