Great video. I’ve installed several of these and I have a solution for you. There is a switched 12v source in the right footwell. This source is activated when you sit in the drivers seat and turn the vehicle on. When you park and exit the vehicle it automatically shuts off the power. You can get your ground from the body of the vehicle. I can send you a photo of the wire you need to tap into. Easy fix, I also use this power source for my radar detector
Please send!!! Got6speed @ gmail thanks !!
@@TommyLGarage sent!
@@TommyLGarage oh yeah a video on that would be great!!! That's something ghat has stopped me as well from getting it
Can you post here or send to me as well? Thanks.
Please send to me also!!
That’s amazing how in the same video you were able to come up with a very creative solution to install these ambient lights (I never saw someone place them in the wood trim… kudos, that was genius) and then right after you went for a RPD ( rapid planned disassembly… ) 🤣
Isn't placing it in the wood trim blocking any airflow? Apart from that, I can imagine it is reflecting a LOT in your windscreen when driving in the dark...
That’s how the instructions put it and others don’t because it ruins airflow.
100% agree. I want ambient light in mine but it has to be integrated. It's too bad tesla hasn't put it in the interior yet.. once they run out if battery innovation, they'll probably turn to the interior. Maybe 2025 models will have it.
Just connect power into the foot well, LEDs. It now will turn on and off automatically, and will brighten with the screen in the day and night.
Good idea !
I have the lights installed in my 3 and I always keep it on. The lights turn off by themselves when the car goes into sleep (15 minutes of inactivity), so they're not on 24/7. The only issue is the car will wake up whenever sentry mode is activated.
Still not perfect. But I’ve got another solution up my sleeve!
@@TommyLGarage Do tell us!
@@TommyLGarage Whats the solution xD we're all wanting to hear :D
Seems like a bit of a waste to just throw it out (someone else might've been fine with manually switching it on/off) but this is the kind of honest review I wish we had more of! Thank you :)
Thanks for the feeeback!
I added a PIR sensor that acts like a switch and is pointed to the driver. it detects movement and will turn on your lights once you're driving. Once you leave the car, ie no movement, it will turn off after 1min - 10min (this can be set). I would recommend the bead LED lights though. These acrylic lights are so weak and you would only see them at night.
Can you share more info?? Brilliant idea
there are new lights that you simply connect to usb and they have a sensor that detects sound inside the car and turns on the lights. when you leave the car, the lights simply turn off when the car goes to sleep. I found them easier and more intuitive that the ones you can only control with a remote control or from an app...these other ones have also the app to control them, just that they have sensors which makes your life easier
Link?

I think you could have attempted to connect the power source to your lighting switch so that when the head lights are on the lights can draw power from that source and light up. I used to have that set up on my Infiniti and it worked great.
Good idea. I may try again
My main complaint with all this kind of aftermarket stuff is they all seem to want to claim the ONE cigarette lighter in the armrest. It gets crowded, there’s too many cables tucked in places that weren’t designed to have cables tucked. And none of them connect to the obd2 to automatically turn on when the car is on.
Agreed
I have the same ones you purchased while it may not be OEM and a hassle it’s definitely nice at night since the car interior is so damn dark! I kept mine although I also hate how I lost a majority of space in the center armrest as well. I don’t mind turning it on and off I got used to it but I don’t think I can drive at night without the ambient lights ! To each their own. I feel you on how it doesn’t feel OEM at all! There’s a company here in LA that hard wires it somehow but i was quoted for $1800 and went with this Amazon version lol.
The glow strips are absolute GARBAGE! I returned these after doing the dash and driving an hour at night. Extremely dim and super cheap looking.
@@TexasTen I got a whole different new setup now wires hidden and everything lights turn off whenever the doors close and lock. It’s great.
I installed the same product on my M3P and loved it, but has anyone else noticed the reflection of the dash led in the windshield when they’re driving at night? It can become really distracting. I removed it and left the center console portion only.
my m3p has tinted windows, would you think i would face the same problem as you if i install the led lights? thanks!
I bought the same set plus another small footwell set that plugs into the original foot lights that are controlled from the screen. The second set is just for the connectors and rest will be thrown but at least this kit will then turn on by itself and even the brightness should be controlled by the OEM ambient lights option
Can you share link?
I was thinking the same thing, can't you piggy back off the factory front footwell for power
Did we figure this out?
You may not be able to say it, but you sure can install it! That's the cleanest ambient light install I've seen👍
Thanks !!
Thanks for the right review. I have seen people wowing all the time and making you buy this, but does not bother to mention this crucial part that it requires manual intervention. I am sure a simple daylight sensor somewhere would have done the trick, but yeah, its 90% there.
Thanks for the love!
I didn't install this exact one (and I have a 2018 M3), but I think this is a really silly reason to not want it. There's nothing wrong with leaving it always on as during the day you can't even tell there's lights and then at night-- tada.
I think Tesla should have ambient lighting in their next generation of Teslas.
I agree!
2 years later they do!
Highland has it
Great video! But please do not use a screwdriver for any of this, the spudger should be sufficient and does not leave any marks
Thanks for the tip!!
Any way to tap into the actual footwell lighting wires?
Simple fix. I used something very similar for ambient lighting. And I used the parking lights as a power relay. So it comes only once your car powers on the headlights. Very OEM.
Good idea !
@@TommyLGarage Can either of you make a video please? Thank you!
What happens when you use your heat? Doesn’t that melt the plastic insert of the light?
No it wont
Why didn’t you just hardwired in so it’ll come on automatically when you start the car and then go off when you shut it off it’s very easy. There’s a bundle of wires near the passenger foot well and you just have to tap into the red wire and you’re good to go.
I didn’t think of it
Hi there I've got mine and i customize the power source to get his energy from the light under the steering wheel, this not only allow the light to be turn on and of by the ambient light of tesla itself but also remove all the wire in the center box
How did you wire it??
@@TommyLGarage the wire can be use by a simple 12 gage and for each light its nothing else than a positive negative. After doing so you'll be able to bring each wire under the the steering inside the console to hide all wire there plus youll ha e able to unplug the light there and cut the cable that is used for the 12v and simply place easy connector with basic electric understanding if you want contact me on private message ill be able to explain in a better way for you with picture. Ive also already send my concept to the company that make these light but no respond
@@AlexDeg92 Can you please elaborate? 🙏
@@TheDeadRadioKing the under wheels part have already a light that is simply 4 pins. positive, negative, neutral/ground and a controller. the module can be used for a 12V source of light removing the requirement for a 12V car adaptor.
Buy any 12 V cable either solder than to the positive and negative or collide them with an easy clip if solder is too much for you.
this will provide not only the energy for the system that gage the light and the light itself. Bear in mind that to allow the led to turn on a minimum of 20% of light by the tesla display will be required to give the light source enough amp to power the external source.
This will now shift the cable from being in the center console to under the wheel hidden inside the cabinet with all other wire
That's it
Will you lose the light settings each time the lights turn off? If so I wonder what the default or startup light is like?
I believe that the install itself is not perfect because I don’t like to see anything sticking out,
But you can always tap it into the parking lights wire like this it’ll only work at night.
Just connect it with a 12 volt source that is only running 12 volt when night. It’s as simple als that
The dashboard lights look better on top you can barely see them inbetween the wood
Maybe
It would be great if I saw your video prior too purchasing the same kit :))) I removed it for the same reason as you did :)) Even tried to connect the power source of the actual ambient light in the car, and now those don't work anymore :((
Is there any kit out there that can connect to the OBD2 port or some other connection so that when your footwell light is on/off these lights come on/off with it? I’m with you in the switch it feels cheap ans why I haven’t installed or. it seems simple enough to fully integrate with a cable connection. These kits are most $30-80. I’d be willing to spend a little extra for some thing that feels a little more integrated.
Dude, why you buy some cheap Amazon stuff for a 70k car? There are oem level lighting available for 600-700 euros. The oem level ones light up automatically if you open the door.
That’s way too much $$
couldn't you connect the switch with a lightsensor and autocontrol that?
Good afternoon hope and pray that all is well there are some footwell lights that connects to the oem plug and you don't have to worry about turning them on or off it's a better option as for the dash and center console that's different there's nothing for that yet unless modified
Good video and method. The wires take up too much room
Thanks!
If you wire it directly to a fuse upon start it will turn on with the vehicle
No fuse box available
Please tell me there’s a source for this!
Does it void the warranty?
No
You can wire the system to the accessory in the vehicle. Unfortunately, the accessory only activates when you sit down in the driver seat
Then it’s also a no go
couldn't you just hardwire it instead to a fuse that turns off when the car is off and on when the car is on?
Or maybe wiring it to a photoelectric switch? So that it only turns on when it's dark outside.
Can’t hardwire a Tesla
@@TommyLGarage oh
There must be a fuse for some kind of headlights or something thats turned on when its dark🤔
Nope
Doesn’t it reflect in your line of sight?
I tapped into the power from the original ambient light so that it comes on and off with the oem ambient light. Works great that way.
Brilliant !
I'm trying to do this exact same thing. Is theree a video or instruction you followdd or did you wing it?
@@gonzaloenrique8741 I just tapped the wire in. I don’t have specific instructions and no video that I followed. I bought a female cigarette lighter socket with two wires out and used those two wires to attach to the oem ambient light. Works perfectly.
@@tuantnguyen03 where exactly do you tap in? Any photos you can send as a reference? I want to do this!
@@stupidnick79809 I tapped into the ambient light in the drivers footwell. Just tap into those wires.
Oh cool i have does leds. I don't have a tesla but i finally got a better idea how to install it.
Maybe you can connect a switch that triggers the headlight.
I got the same lights but the app does not seem to connect to the lights . Any ideas what am I missing ? Bluetooth is turned on.
Is the car switched on?
The alien space ship music now fits perfectly with the car :)
Haha thanks !
Any attempt at using that switched 12V source an older comment mentioned? I was looking at this kit and would love to know if that worked!
Not yet but might give it a try and will report back
So glad you posted this bc I was about to install Tesla ambient lights 🙏🏽
next mod: ambient light retrofit in your purse!
Love the slippers but we have the old trim and not the new Model Y trim. Thanks for posting 👍
It's exactly the same reason I didn't buy into this.........although it looks cool, but the hassle of turning on/off just not cutting it.
Love your content! I actually have almost same cars as you - F82 (Yas marina of course) and model Y performance (blue). Your videos have been helping so much for my DYIs. Any chance you will be doing a video on wiring a radar detector for you model Y?
Thanks! Yes I already wired it but will do a video showing how I did it.
Doesn't that block the air flow?
No it doesn’t
I wish I could post pictures here of my install of the same lights from Nestour. I don't mind the light switch in the arm rest, to me I like that I can control the power like a breaker and control the colors with the app through a separate tablet that also I use for gauges on the Tesla scan app. I care about esthetics more than luxury functions... Great video and review. 👍
Why didn't u just use wire taps to connect directly to interior lighting wires or a fuse tap n connect it into the fuse box? Lbvs. That was actually nice.. then u wouldn't have had to flick a switch . The lights would have came on n off as u turned the car on and off.
That’s a good idea actually
What kit did you use?
Linked it in the description
U can just splice it lmaoo I bought a kit like that an made it so every time I turn on the car it turns itself on wasn’t a need to take it off you just needed to hook it up with a cable with power only issue is if I ever wanted it off I needed to go in the app an manually turn it off
Which cable ?
Very sad. I would have just left it on all the time. But you just saved me time and money 💰
Very distracting and not worth it. You also have some light bleed coming out from the corners of the dashboard. Ambient light around the Frunk + Hansshow Power Frunk would have been a cooler project.
Lazy install followed by “I feel like I shouldn’t” because some backwards idea of image. Easier to just hardware it anyways. What a toadstool.
Toadstool? Great use of vocabulary
It looked naff anyway imho but thank you for the video and confirming you have taste 🙂👍
Had mine for 8 months and it automatically turns off and off when I unlock/lock the car haha
Nice !!
can i buy those lights from you ?
Threw them out
@@TommyLGarage no worries
You’re a hero mate
Thanks!
In my opinion Tesla looses a lot in not providing their buyers, without cars without ambient lightning. It’s a whole other level of experience they won’t have❕❗️
I agree !!
Probably could have adapted a photo sensor to the switch
Now that’s an idea !!
You messed up the dash. It’s suppose to illuminate more.
Then it reflects on the windshield
you made mistake. Connect the power to leg lower lamp
Now I know!
No thanks. It will never look OEM
Good video tommy
F80 - 5 exhausts …. Tesla - 30 ambient light kits lol
Haha something like that
How about these door handles instead? Saw this mod a while ago, /watch?v=Efc4aQaPl_A
I think tacky
@@TommyLGarage No it isn't.
If you only knew how easy it was to do what you wanted before you pulled everything.
Cool 👍🏿
I will take it. Send it to me.
Too late. Threw it out
I can't imagine paying for a vehicle with such poor lighting.
get a better one i would of sent that back after opening that box
Got any recommendations?
good decision to remove it...
It was just not good enough
Fajny odcinek i pozdrawiam
Dziękuje jak zwykle!!
You purposefully installed it wrong just to make a video of it.
You purposely commented to make it seem like you figured me out
looks cheap as hell
Agreed
You dork!!! Why did you disassemble it??? Connect it to the ambient light source at the foot well---- Give me a second. Looking for my palm to face emoji-----🤦 There it is. Lol🤣😂 Good video btw. Now go back and make the new video...
Whoooops!
Che giostraro
Si si !
such a lame excuse 😒
Teslas build quality is embarrassing! Almost as bad as the newer Mercedes, intact is definitely worse than the mercs
It’s like a Lada
