    Jay & Amber, you'll love their "The One I Love" and "Shiny Happy People" !!! That's a mandolin on the intro and throughout the song. The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate" per Michael Stipe. The singer/songwriter has said its about obsession and unrequited love as well.

    Michael Stipe is a lyrical and vocal savant. Few singers bring such pure, raw, and unambiguous vocal quality. There is only one R.E.M.

  • @Shrykespeare
    @Shrykespeare 2 роки тому +326

    Many would call this song the pinnacle of R.E.M.'s long and storied existence, and it would be hard to argue. It went Platinum, was the band's only Top 5 hit on the Hot 100, and had crossover appeal to many who never got into the band previously. This led to a lot more success on commercial radio, including hits like "Everybody Hurts" (which you reacted to last year), "Man on the Moon", "What's the Frequency Kenneth?", "Bang and Blame", and "Bittersweet Me". Everyone has their favorite REM song, but the truth is, you really can't go wrong with anything sung by Michael Stipe. Also - please do more Depeche Mode and U2. Those two bands, and R.E.M., shaped alternative music and influenced everyone who came after them. Of the tens of thousands of songs I've heard in my life, "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode is my all-time favorite (and I'd encourage you to do the live version in Cologne rather than the studio version, it's spectacular).

      I'd say more in the late 80s than the 90s. The 90s didn't really have an established sound, which was why the phrase alternative rock was so broad. You could have a band like Pearl Jam or Nirvana, then have someone like Beck, then Garbage and Radiohead.

      @@loriannrichardson7644 The definitive themes of the early to mid 90s pop music were cynicism and pessimism, starting in ~1991. The late 90s marked a shift away from that. Obviously there were exceptions, but everything from grunge to alternative rock to mainstream pop to folk, etc was saturated with a sudden dark outlook that wasn't reflective of society as a whole, but was eaten up by teens-20somethings as their generation's music identity... and frankly, in my opinion, it was tragic. Not only did it contribute to a notable rise in teen suicides, but revived a dying drug culture among young age groups which exacerbated every perceived societal ill and contributed in creating new ones.

      Given all available context, we might replace "girl" with "person," especially since a good song can be relevant to many people's individual circumstances. The phrase "losing my religion" usually means something along the lines of "losing my composure" or "losing my cool" -- like "yeah, that's me in the corner on the verge of flipping out and starting a scene about this."

    R.E.M.’s sound reminds me so much of being a teenager in the 90s. I have always liked this band, ever since “The One I Love” back in the 80s. Their album Automatic For The People (the one that “Everybody Hurts” is on) came out my freshman year and it’s one of only a few albums to date that I can listen to cover-to-cover (so to speak) and enjoy every song. And I did play that album over and over ad nauseum until Counting Crows came along and then their album also became part of the heavy rotation on my cheap stereo ☺️ I feel like their sound can be an acquired taste, but there’s something about Michael Stipe’s voice and their whole musical persona that I’ve always found very appealing. They’re one of the most musically prolific bands of my generation, yet I feel like most people I know aren’t super familiar with them. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but I really like “Try Not To Breathe,” and “Nightswimming.”
    Edit: I see a lot of comments for “Shiny Happy People,” which I agree-I think you all would like that song. It’s a fun song and the video is fun, but danggggg did it get overplayed on MTV back in the day 😆 I think it’s one of my least favorites of theirs (along with “Man On The Moon”) for that reason, especially because I was NOT a shiny happy people kinda person as a teen (I was kind of goth-adjacent) lmao but it’s still a great song. And lmaoooo the first time someone told me they put their foot in something I laughed my head off. But dang, was it some good food!

    They are just a bunch of Southern boys who done good. :) I still recall the first time I saw them. They had come to a hole in the wall in Charlotte, the big city, and there may have been 10 people in the audience. The venue was a converted 2-story house with a large main room with a stage. I wandered in and out of the room, and thought that the lead singer had a certain charisma that might serve them well. He had a headful of wavy hair. Pre-hat days. Years later I would catch them again in DC at a huge political benefit with everyone in the bidniz.

    Your interpretation of the meaning of the phrase "losing my religion" is exactly right. Their lead singer and lyricist Michael Stipe was from the South, from Georgia, and he was using it in exactly the sense that you heard your grandparents use it, losing your sense of self or your composure or your footing. Stipe wrote this about trying to remain appealing to love interests who were very different from him, always wondering if he'd said too much or not said enough or said the right thing. It's a very relatable song really.
    I also always want to mention when talking about REM that I saw them live in their early years, like 1983-84, when they had kind of a sixties-revival Byrds-ish sound, and at one point during the show, Stipe walked out into the middle by himself and sang that old song "Moon River" a capella. It was beautiful.
