Kia Ora from New Zealand (subbed #237!) Do you have tips on storing and minimising smells in fridge or that's just the fate us kimchi lovers have to put up with? 😬

Hah! What a legit question. The disappointing answer is the obvious one. It is our (smelly) fate.
However, if you're into cleaning and so forth, I will list the top 5 things Korean people will do to try to minimize the odours:
      1. Baking Soda/sliced lemons/dried coffee grounds can be left in the fridge to "eliminate" odours.
      2. Periodically clean the fridge with vinegar (mixed with water), baking soda paste or leftover Soju!
      3. Wrap the entire kimchi container in a thick plastic to keep smells contained.
      4. Other odour-reducing items: Activated charcoal is v popular. You can also try to dupe this effect by burning toast to a crisp, putting it in a bag and poking holes in it. A poor man's diy, if you will.
Other than that, if you find the kimchi container itself to carry too much stink, you may want to give that a good wash before refilling it with a new batch. A raved method is to use sugar (just plain ol' white sugar is fine) to water (1 part sugar to 3 parts water). Put the lid on and swish it around everywhere. Leave for a day and swish periodically. This apparently gets rid of the smell AND the spotty bits. Rinse and dry in sunlight for max effect.
If it makes you feel better, this is a highly searched question for Korean viewers as well, there are even hashtags for it #김치통냄새제거 #김치통냄새없애는법 (how to remove smells from kimchi container etc).
This video's got 1.6 million people who watched how to do that lol ua-cam.com/video/5xHA-2h7qvE/v-deo.html
Welcome Kia Ora! So glad you subbed, hope you enjoy future vids and don't hesitate to ask any other Korean food questions 😁!

@@OppaCooksHere Wow thank you so much I was not expecting such a detailed response (I love the burnt toast tip haha so clever)! I'll try all the tips or just put up with a dedicated sealed container for my kimchi (would you recommend those brown containers?) Personally I don't mind the smell except I don't think my guests appreciate kimchi flavoured milk in their tea 😅

Erm, can't say I *recommend* to go buy dedicated kimchi containers. I mean, they don't make it smell any less or anything. Only reason we got them is because of the DIY kimchi video cos needed the (large) sizes. Still have to seal them up in a bag if you want to keep the smells down. But if you do want to buy them, yes, they come in many sizes and are handy to easily identify as "the kimchi container" lol.
If money is burning a hole in your pocket, introducing The Kimchi Fridge. You probably know it's a thing. Set to keep kimchi at optimal temperatures to keep deliciousness and freshness all year-round- Something like that. Also, keeps the funk away from the dairy products!
Otherwise double-bag that kimchi and deodorize the fridge for tea-times 🤣
