As a German petrolhead, I have to say one thing about the channel: it's not really about cars, but about love and dedication for a subject. I am always impressed by what you can forgive a car if it has history and character. I grew up more with questions of build quality, with top engineering and performance, you see the cars more as a kind of being. Thumbs up and thank you for a different way of looking at things.
..........more than the sum of it's parts...
Just glad you're okay Ian. Shout out to Eddy, the hero of this whole endeavour. Get some proper quality rubber on her, asap! If there's one thing I've learned from thousands of mechanic videos over the years is never, ever cheap out on tyres.
New old stock tires are usually a great deal. Cheap and properly stored, you can get high end tires for the price of Chinese. Caveat: 4 yrs old or newer, but I rather have 4yr old brand new Pirellis, Nittos, Bridgestones, etc than made in 2021 nankings, triangles, lions lol
Thank goodness for friends like Eddie, who I'm sure has provided emotional support as well as the practical. Glad you didn't try to drive home straight away - shock can be a strange beast and isn't always immediate.
The important thing is A: You're ok, B: Nobody else in the Family was involved, C: Betty will clearly live to see another day.. I saw the tweet and I feared after all this effort to get her over here it would end just like this.. Clearly she is a tough gal so glad she survived most of it.. Even then, Cars can be replaced, Human lives can't.. Glad all is ok in the end.
I’ve had several falcon rear end losses over the years- some through hoonery and some through wet and greasy road conditions. Luckily Betty hasn’t lost any of her beauty!
This is the traditional way to christen your falcon! Happy to help you find parts for betty here in Australia for you
AU’s getting sideways isn’t unusual lol
Kudos to you for handling this so well. You really do seem to be a pretty splendid person, and I'm happy you're unhurt. It's a right bummer, this accident, but I'm glad to see that Betty is in safe hands, that she'll be back on the road, and that this didn't end any worse.
Agree, your response is admirable. A role model to others as to how to handle unfortunate road incident and it's aftermath.
Bad luck mate. From experience, a good set of tyres transforms the ride + control of the AUs. I upgraded Chinese tyres to a set of a set of Bridgestone Turanzas and it was far quieter with loads more grip. Spending the extra is worth it!
I used to run Potenzas on my WH Statesman. Drove it everywhere, including in Ballarat when it was snowing on those tyres. I used to run recaps before I'd touch cheap Chinese tyres.
The Bridgestones on my BA Ute work well. Given its weight and horsepower I wouldn't like to drive it with cheap tyres.
And new shock absorbers, of course! They are as important as good tires!
@@zoomosis I run Goodyears on my BA Ute. Tad noisy, but do provide decent grip. I also refuse to drive mine with cheap tyres on it.
Any tyre gives half-decent grip in dry conditions. Wet, not so much. I've always been happy with even basic Bridgestone RE92s on my Magna (Diamante). I have also experienced Continentals on a Magna - same grip but less progressive transition from slip to grip and back again and more noise.
That road surface looked smooth and shiny in the video, even the white line on the shoulder has worn away. How very economical of Lincoln council to put that nice sign up instead of resurfacing what is obviously a worn out stretch of road. Glad you're okay though and I hope the car's easily fixable.
This is common over here in the states too. 'Rough Road Ahead' permanent sign. Just fix the bloody road!
If that road is an A road, it's the responsibility of Highways England, not Lincolnshire CC surely?
@@cambridgemart2075 If it's a TRUNK Road it's the responsibility of HE. Most A roads are County roads. Google Lincs Highways and they will have a map (or list) of resurfacing schemes in the area. If that road is planned to be resurfaced it will be on there. I'm a big fan of Hubnut but giiven how busy the roads are, and the fact cars aren't falling off the road on a daily basis, I would say it's likely to be 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. It could be diesel (very common on the exit of roundabouts, esp if trucks have had their fuel caps pinched by nomadic types), could be mud, could be terrible/old tyres.
It's times like this that you realise how many friends you have who are prepared to change their plans to help you out 👍
I can hear the emotion in your voice Ian, glad you are OK and the damage to Betty is not as bad as expected. I had visions of the entire offside being damaged
The main thing is you're ok and the car can be repaired. So in my book that's a win!
My Land Rover Series III was the same when I bought it. A previous owner fitted some Trayal T-70's on it which were lethal when wet. If you went around a roundabout at more than 15mph, you'd be facing the other direction, and it wasn't even an off-road tyre. I since fitted some Avon Rangemaster's as fitted as OE back in the day and even 5 years and 28,000 miles later they're still like glue in the wet. Lesson learned, always fit premium tyres no matter how old or how few miles you do, you never know when they'll repay you.
Well tested/reviewed tyres really. Some mid-'budget' tyres are actually good, they just might not have much life in them, no claimed '50'000 miles' like some, but wet grip can still be good for a summer tyre. Tyre reviews is a channel on UA-cam that I think is a good one to look up for a variety of different tyres. You don't need to be forking out £150+ per tyre to get a good tyre for our climate.
@@markwright3161 I paid way less than £150 each for the MICHELIN CrossClimate+ tires I put on my new (used)
Volvo XC70 two years ago.
Yep, that could have been a lot worse. The number of times we pass those skid warning signs (when we see them), I always find myself thinking "why don't they do something about it?". Clearly that is an accident blackspot with potentially very nasty consequences judging by that drop which would occur just when you've spun parallel to the road. Glad you are ok, and that it appears Betty can be fixed, but really it's only the first bit of that sentence that ultimately matters. Take it easy, rest up.
I work in the recovery industry and have the same conversation at almost every accident site.... "I was only going slow" the road was really slippery " "there was a dog" "I've no idea what happened " "it was the wind " "this is why I never drive on Tuesday "......😂😂😂

You're lucky you didn't drop Betty in the creek. In a way it was just as well that there was no barrier there, otherwise you'd have made a mess of the whole right side. Good to see you're in one piece and Betty basically so. Take care!
Rather a mess to the side of the car than tumbling down that slope. Sorting out that road surface is vital and in the interim period a crash barrier.
You can tell you’re a proper UA-camr now, as you’re all about the content, even when things go wrong.
In all seriousness though, we are all really glad you’re okay Ian. That road is obviously a problem. I just hope that it gets sorted and can spare some people from having the same if not worse fate.
Very relieved you are safe, and that Betty is reparable. I skidded once in a Peugeot 205 and went straight into a driveway instead of turning left to follow the road. I was not going fast, but can imagine how it feels to skid out of control! Looking forward to the next video!

The main thing Ian is that you aren’t hurt . You’ll get Betty sorted . Take care mate , looking forward to seeing you at one of the socials. 👍
When I seen the fb post the other day I was gutted for you but glad to see you’re ok and Betty is only slightly scathe. No doubt the hubnut community will rally round and she’ll be back on the road in no time.
The most important thing nobody's hurt , chin up Ian just very unfortunate 😔 👍
Sad to hear the news. At least you are not hurt, physically. And lucky Betty didn't go down that bank. That was close. Good idea not to drive home straight away. Have a chance to calm down from the shock. Wishing you both, Ian and Betty a speedy recovery.
I have been round that roundabout several times and have never noticed that warning either. I will be going round it next week again so i will be sure to be careful. I am just glad you are ok and that Betty is going to be looked after too. You have some good friends.
Oooh, I've done that exit "in a rush" quite a few times over the years, never had an issue but I'll certainly be taking more care from now on, I hadn't noticed the signs. Glad all ok, minor repair and all should be good.
Falcons and Commodores have always been a bit inclined to bite you with cheap tyres. Lots of torque/grunt and rudimentary suspension can a sketchy combination.
Mad max did well
It’s not just “ cheap” tyres, this too has happened to me in a BA Falcon, taking a bend in the wet, and doing 180 turn, facing the traffic. Luckily it was a quiet evening and almost no traffic. A car Stability control fixes this problem...
Every time I get into my vehicle there are two buttons that get pressed, stability control and the rear blind.
Strange thing is that I have put cheap tyres on my Au Fairmont wagon and they are the best compromise between wet and dry handling I have had on it. Mine has LPG so it can't have traction control. Ian doesn't say whether he had it on or not.
Betty has traction control and it was active, but would actually have made things worse here by triggering lift-off oversteer. I don't think traction was the issue though.
I am sorry that you had an accident in Betty, However it is nice to see that it wasn't serious and that you & Betty are in one piece. Here's to making Betty better & safer.
Unfortunatly you can't straighten that axel. They will be cheap here in Aust, but shipping wil be a killer. Great to see an Aussie car in the UK and best of luck with the repairs.
My Ford Capri used to do this party trick on roundabouts after a drop of rain , and that was driving sensible, it’s all part of the fun

@@NitroNuggetTV I couldn't agree more. Those who fail to learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them...
"Didn't notice" the six foot sign warning of slippery road ahead, then blames the council. Shall we add "Driving without due care and attention" to the list?
SMH.
Ah yes an AU Falcon sending it gently into the grass in the wet is a common site in Australia. Good to see she's salvageable and you are ok.
I respectfully disagree. Where i live there are AU Fords everywhere. I have owned my AU for 20 years and never ran off the road (and i travel long distances on the second rate reads in this country). Pity the car is in the UK. In Australia it would be easily fixed by most mechanics and the parts at a give away price. Thats the benefit of owning one in Oz. Bit heavy around town on the gas but fantastic on the highway. And 100% pleasure to drive. A very advanced car for its vintage and pedigree
@@robo9016 In Australia there is a stereotype regarding Falcons and Commodores losing control due to hooning, that's the reference I'm trying to make, as a joke. I have also owned Falcons and Commodores, and I have never lost control of them.
Glad to see its only minor damage sustained and your okay. You've preformed a near miracle just getting Bettty here so this isn't going to hold you back. Just makes her more precious to you and us.
Glad you're OK Ian and Betty lives to fight another day. Having grown up with live axle, large engined Australian RWD cars, they can be very tail happy on slippery road surfaces (which that location is), and those 'Goodride' tyres aren't the last word in grip. Would really like to see you have some better quality rubber on Betty. Looking forward to seeing Betty back soon. All the best.
It’s great that you and Betty haven’t sustained any major damage! Glad she’s gonna live to see another day, and of course more vids 👍
You see those old Ford falcons coming off the road all over Australia, the commodores aren’t much better 🤭
I guess too old to have stability control?
I watch the Dashcam Owners Australia videos and at the slightest hint of rain it's like everyone's tyres are made of nylon. Even the fwd stuff is oversteering off in to the hedge.
@@buggs9950 I was thinking of the same thing. I wondered if a spell of dry dusty weather followed by light rain might make the road particularly treacherous. That could be the case in Australia more than here, hence the dash cam mishaps.
He can fall from a tall building, he can ditch his brand new car, coz he’s the well loved hub nut that made Ian such a star!

Cheap tyres, rwd, wet roundabout.. glad you’re okay 👍
Great to hear / see that you are ok - what’s that James Bond comment “shaken not stirred” Betty will come right - suspect the road surface is troublesome - there is a need for the falcons / commodores in NZ to have good tyres - our road surface may be different though.

Decades ago, I skidded off a road in my first Hillman Avenger. It finished up on its side. We pushed it back onto its wheels and drove away. But the first time I used the brakes, it was evident that I had bent a half shaft. It got repaired and drove on for many, many years afterwards.

Aww man, the worst luck but you've got a great network of friends and the amazing power of refreshing tea to fall back on. Also the hubnut family! 😃
I rented one of those in New Zealand when it was a current model. I thought then that the front and rear suspension felt like strangers to one another. The front felt fine, the rear enjoyed body roll and oversteer. At that time I owned a Ford Laser, which was very different in every way.
Sounds like very good tyres are a great idea.
I did exactly the same in my V6 Cortina around five years ago, just pulled off of the roundabout and it felt like someone had jacked up the rear and slid the back end around, i think it was a patch of spilt diesel or something, sadly the car got totalled but glad you are ok, definitely a brown trouser moment!

Glad to see you both survived with only minor damage ie she’ll go again
It's all about the tyres mate. Never put cheap tyres on a car, especially on the driving wheels. I exclusively run Goodyears on my BA, Bridgestones on my WH Statesman V8 (was a more modern version of the tyres that were on it when new) and had Dunlops on my XG. Noise sounds like the tyre's rubbing against the inner guard, so maybe something in the rear end is bent.
Really pleased that you and Betty came off mostly unscathed. That island is notorious, I work for a recovery contractor in Nottingham and even we get offered jobs there as it's so chaotic.
Just glad that you didn't collect anyone on the way off and Betty will live again.
Hopefully see you (and a reserve vehicle) at the social.
Hoping you and Mrs Hubnut get over this (mentally) and wishing Betty a speedy recovery.
It's horrific that the council have known about this for some time and not done anything about it.
More than some time, I live there and it's been like it as long as I can remember, it doesn't help that you get diesel on there as well, ok dry, ok wet, it's damp when it is dangerous.
@@johndilloway9762 How many thousands of car's go over that piece of the road every day? How many of them have crashed? Why have they crashed? A new road surface won't prevent diesel spills, nor rubber build up that occurs in the dry and becomes slippery when wet. It's easy to blame the council, but I bet they have had it inspected and it's not actually that bad... if you drive sensibly and your tyres are properly inflated, aren't bald and not cheap, nasty ditch finders.
Glad you're not physically hurt Ian!
Glad you're okay. It was a shock reading the Facebook update. Best of luck to Betty for a fast recovery.
Most important is that you're alright and that nothing worse happened (especially venturing further into that dip!
Really feel for ya, and it's obvious that it wasn't your fault, if only from the scrapyard worth of broken parts below where Betty did manage to call a halt! Many years ago in my youth I had a similar issue at a wet roundabout in Manchester, but I'm the first to admit that speed was the main culprit (actually I was the main culprit), not helped by all four tyres being very close to, if not over the minimum limit, so your call on some new shoes in due course is probably a good one, especially as we race towards Winter - that said, I fully appreciate when you mentioned the speed at which it all happened, as I too was looking back down the road I'd just come up in less than the blink of an eye, and the eye that was blinking might not necessarily have been in my head! - just glad you're safe !
Chin up Betty, and chin up Hub Nut - look on the positive, at least the bent half-shaft straighten/swap will give you some more content, and you could give Maguiers Scratch 2.0 a try on the scratches.
Stay safe!
The main thing is that you are ok and glad to see you have the parts on order to get Betty well again and Eddie is a top man offering to fix it for you.
Defo councils are crash strapped, took a accident 4 years ago that my involved my pregnant wife and young son for them on a accident black spot to change it from a give way to a stop sign even through there was a fatal crash there years earlier!

Hello Ian. Most people don't get to bare their experiences in a way that someone with your profile does. There will always be the waggy finger brigade who seem to think that they could not or would not be in a similar situation as they, in their own minds, cannot get it anything other than perfect. You were today exposed to the laws of physics which apply to us all and despite their condemnation they would have ended up in the same place. The important thing is you are unharmed and the car can be repaired. Look on the positive side, it has provided potentially more content!
