Drove through there yesterday and it was such a beautiful beach in a tight knit neighborhood. Douglas definitely picked a great place to establish a community.
I think it was a great spot too. That community seems to love it. I hope more people get to go through and see the spot. They probably don't hope that!
Thank you for this video! I just finished a book today called Summer on the Bluffs, set in Oak Bluffs. It’s part of a trilogy and one of the books is set here in Highland Beach. The other is set in Sag Harbor. The African-American history is so rich in all 3 places. I’m making it a goal to visit in person!
Me too! I planned to visit Sag Harbor this year but it didn't work out. Hopefully I'll visit soon. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by!
Born and raised in the DMV and I've known about Highland Beach for a little over a year now and would love to live there, in fact I'm reading a book about Highland Beach by Sunny Hostin, I love learning about our history especially when it so close to home.
Summer on Highland Beach! I found that book after visiting and it's on my list to read. Wasn't this an interesting bit of our history? Id never heard of it. I'm happy to share it with those who didn't know the history. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I live in Maryland, have heard of Highland Beach and knew a little about the history, but I have not had the chance to explore it. Definitely a visit there is on my to-do list!!
@@Ziggicam Im thrilled you enjoyed the visit. There is no parking, so a visit maybe just a drive through, but I may be worth it just to see this little known historically significant neighborhood.
Thanks Jamaal! I had no idea. I'm always interested in places like these where we have to create our own spaces to enjoy ourselves. Thanks for sharing this. I have some videos in the future you make enjoy. Hope you stick around and check them out!
Thanks for this. I lived for several years around the corner at Arundel on The Bay community. There is lots of history there and always visited the house. Wonderful area to live in. Maryland has tons of black history.
@@jamaalshelton6793 In this neighborhood, there is. In Ann Arundel county as a whole, I'm not certain about that. I wonder if the census would have that info.
Nice, what a beautiful and historical place ! I’m sure it was very cool to get to take it all in in person. I can see it being a great place to visit, vacation or maybe even having a summer home there. The sound of the waves at the end was Lovely 😍, I love the beach 🏖 Thanks Kenny ☀️👍🏾! R.

I visited there about thirty years ago when we had a retreat and I recently went there twice but was unable to access much let alone walk around. There is no parking as it is all private property. How were you able to access it and where did you park
@@TecumsehButler I parked in front of Frederick Douglass' home for about 20 minutes and also near the pier by the beach. I eventually was gently guided out of the neighborhood by security because of the parking situation, but they were kind enough to give me 10 minutes to finish my filming. I knew they would eventually say something, so I filmed what I could.
Excellent! 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽👍🏽Thank you for this video. I enjoy learning about my people. I'm headed to Baltimore soon and will try to find this area. Hey! I love learning about our people too and this was brand new to me. So glad I got to share it. Make your way down if you get the chance, but know that it's a private neighborhood. @@prettyflytraveler Sounds like you are truly thinking it through for retirement. I retired early, but life had basically sent me back to my birth city, where I had not lived in 33 years.
