I started in 4th grade on flute, and was no good at it. By seventh grade I had moved to another school, and decided to try again after hearing the symphonic band play. After another move and a couple years on flute, I heard about "pit" for marching band. So when I moved up to the high school in tenth grade (my high school is a 10-12 high school), I was given the opportunity to play in pit for the marching season. I've loved being in pit, and I still play flute. I've had a ton of fun playing music and it's been getting me through my school days with something to look forward to.

lol how i came to like music? very long story. very, very long story. but music has been a part of my life since before i can remember, and i didnt believe in my talents because i was bullied a lot. when i finally got the chance to be in band, i jumped four instruments because i had so much difficulty with them and no motivation to play. then my band director put me on the trombone, the one instrument that i did not want to play, and i ended up liking it because my section really helped me and made me feel welcome
my section leader is my role model :)

My dad made me play percussion when I was in fourth grade, but I went in kicking and screaming. Then after doing it, I started really liking it. When I was in seventh grade, I fell in love with percussion and began really practicing and dedicating time to the art. Now in high school, I love drum line more than anything, and of course I love concert and marching percussion of course! I like playing in the pit for musicals as well. I really want to go try out for a drum corp and an independent line next year. Thanks, Dad!

I got started with the piano in 3rd grade because my older brother had started playing clarinet the same year. What inspires me is seeing the little kids in the crowd, seeing them in awe, in wonder, and hearing them say they want to be just like that girl on stage.

My mom saw my musical instincts at a young age so she made me do things like sing at church and take piano lessons. I joined chorus in elementary school and never quit since. I had no interest in band at all til 7th grade where my friends saw I could play piano and they dragged me to talking to the band director to taking jazz band as a piano player. I got started my 8th grade year and after a semester I realized how fun band was, so the band director put me in an actual band class and got me started on mallets in percussion. Band changed my life..but in high school it was a struggle because my lack of experience caused people to not like me as much since I wasn't that good. I've even got comments like in the video been said to me. I have made so much progress as a percussionist since 8th grade but I still have a long way. My middle school director and my high school band, chorus, and percussion directors are what strive me to keep going forward as a musician. Michael Crawford is an inspiration for me with my singing.

Freshman year, I took a beginning band class, going from trumpet to trombone and then to marimba in the first couple months. I'm now going into my senior year, 2nd chair percussionist, learning tenor sax and (since earlier today) trombone. I plan to go to school for music education, despite my shortcomings as a musician that are a result of my late start, and march open class corps this upcoming season. If it were not for my amazing band director pushing me to do my best, I may not be where I am now. Your videos, though I've only just found them recently, have inspired me to at least try to march, even if I don't make it the first time. Thank you so much.

I started when I was in sixth grade, I started off with flute, (I was the only guy flutist), then in 8th grade I switched to tenor sax, then in 9th grade, I auditioned for Winter drumline and made a spot. Marched my first show, performed my first time for a statewide festival, and now I'm looking for ways to pay off DCI fees, And in no way did I have the best equipment, I had a 20 year old tenor sax in 8th grade that almost fell apart every time I touched it.

I started tapping around on a drumset when i was 4. Around late 5 early 6, it started to click and i just learned beat after beat and started applying things i heard to what i knew to play songs. About 3 or 4 years ago, i really started study theory rudimental drumming, and i have gotten to do some really cool things performance wise. I also write the percussion for my high school marching band and we almost got best percussion the past 2 years! I started tenors 2 years ago and fell in love. I am now preparing for my call back to the Colts!!! It's amazing to see all these great stories about people achieving their goals and just enjoying and expressing themselves with music. My Dad has been a percussionist in our community band for 26 years now, when I was younger I would go to practice with him every week and sit right beside him for 2 hours and admire him playing drum set and from then all I wanted to do was be in band and play the drums. Well when I got to 4th grade I went to band sign ups and first played the drums like I wanted to until the director asked if i wanted to try anything else and not knowing what this instrument was I said randomly "Trumpet" i fell in love with it and I have been playing it for 7 years now. I also auditioned for the Blue Stars Drum And Bugle Corps back in November and got a callback, I will be going back in January.

I started with the trumpet in 6th grade. I got pretty good but during my senior year my skill level plummeted to an embarrassing level. I was put on euph in concert band to balance the sound out and now I am a freshman in college playing euph because I am just dreadful on trumpet (sadly). I'm no music major, but the dream of being in the Cavaliers keeps me in band and practicing daily.
Would I rather be good at trumpet than be good on euph? Yes. But I'm doing what it takes to get into dci as quick at possible, and through playing euph I've gained an appreciation for the low brass.

It started i the 6th grade when music teachers from a local middle school came to show us musical instruments. I immediately fell in love with music, specifically brass and the euphonium. I joined beginning band the next year but I played flute because I had completely forgotten everything my young mind had learned, but i play almost exclusively brass now (mainly mellophone and french horn). My inspiration is always wanting to become better than I was the day, month, year before today and being able to perform in front of people. I also do it just for the fun of the activity.

Started on piano in second grade, began trombone in sixth, and learned baritone in ninth. The main reason I stay in music is kind of weird but in a concert or marching band setting, I love it when crowds get quiet. It's so cool to me to know that people willingly want to hear you play, they WANT to. That's the coolest thing to me, to know that their not just there cause they have to, but because they want to. And when crowds go quiet, their ready to listen, it's when the really want to hear.

Music was honestly just always there in my life, my dad liked to fool around on the piano and I would always just sit there and listen to him as a kid. He started to teach me a few things, so I learned about notes and chords at a really young age, but I never knew that that stuff mattered until I did music in school. I picked up french horn in 6th grade because I was basically the only one in the class who seemed interested in it and now i have people coming up to me asking if I can teach them how to play! It's seriously the love of my life, don't care how pathetic it may sound to some people :P Music is truly a blessing and I get inspired so often that I couldn't think of my life without it. I'm a senior in high school and hoping to go into music in college, so we'll see how that works out :)

At my school, you couldn't join band until 4th grade, so in 3rd grade, I used to come to school like half an hour early to sit outside the bandroom and just listen. The opportunity to play an instrument and make fantastic music at such a young age astounded me and I tried out asap. I ended up on flute and am damn glad I did. I picked up piccolo in middle school and will probably continue both for the rest of my life, but I've also learned piano and violin. My little sister recently joined band because she was inspired by me and sometimes I borrow her clarinet.

I started 1st grade on bass guitar, then why I went to middle school I went to trumpet. By 9th grade in high school I switched to French horn and now have been in honor band with VCHB on horn. As well have just tried out for SCV on mello. If I don't make it in I hope to march mello in SCV Cadets. I'm 17 and am a senior in high school. Music has been a basis of my whole life and has pushed me to be excellent in all areas. I wouldn't be the person I am today without music. I'm so glad I found it and kept it a part of my life for so long. I started playing trumpet in the 6th grade, mostly cause my sister was in band and I thought it'd be fun. I'd had music classes in elementary so I knew how to read music, hold a horn up, that kind of stuff. So I was doin' that, and in seventh grade I picked the violin. When time came to go to high school, I heard of an alternative public school for art. I draw fairly swell, so I was interested, and then I heard they had an orchestra, and I was like, "hella". So I auditioned for it and was accepted. My freshman year I played exclusively violin at my school, and did all kinds of marching band goodness at my home school, the school I would've been automatically put in, since my school is way too tiny to have marching ensembles. That year I also did pit for winter percussion there, something else that my sister, a saxophonist and percussionist, persuaded me in to. I was on goosh (concert bass and gong). This year, I joined jazz band at school, and did mellophone for fall and absolutely loved it. I auditioned for Oregon Crusaders and got a callback, but I can't do it this year. Not enough time, and especially not enough money, since this year, my winter group is going to Dayton! We're the only school in Oregon that's going and has ever gone, and I'm excited to be on vibe this year. And I just realized you (David) are gonna be there so that was pretty much the only thing that could've made it better!! For the future, I'm gonna keep auditioning for corps, until I reach my ultimate goal of becoming a Bluecoat.

I started playing music in recorder after watching my older brother come home and practice recorder everyday. I wanted to be just like him so I jumped at the chance to play recorder. That later carried over into me becoming a clarinet player. I could go on about what inspires me but it's mainly because of my grandmother, who passed away. She keeps me playing clarinet in honor of her memory and my dreams to one day join Academy helps me get through things when it gets tough in percussion.

I started music as a trumpet player in 5th grade. I stayed on that for a long time. Then at the end of my freshman year, about when I began seriously considering a career in music, one of the other trumpets jokingly suggested I play trombone for jazz band next year. I did. Then I got switched in concert band because I'd made the top jazz band due to a shortage of trombonists. Around this time I began following drum corps. I now play euphonium in concert band, trombone in jazz band, and baritone for marching and pep band. I also tried out for the Colts on baritone. I didn't get in, but it's all for the better, really. It will be better to wait on that until I don't have as much to do for school, including band during the summer.

I'm inspired by my aunt who did color guard and plays bassoon and I also do guard and used to play bass clarinet and I'm also inspired by my uncle who's a band director at a really small high school in the middle of nowhere but it makes him happy and he also did Phantom Regiment which is cool and I'm also inspired by their kids who all say that they want to do band and me and my sister are already predicting what section they'll be in but one of them was able to keep tempo before she was a year old. I'm also inspired by my little sister because I know she's a better musician than me and she won most improved this year at our band banquet so I'm a proud older sister but she still annoys me when she plays her clarinet at 8:00 am on a snow day and I'm trying to sleep.

When i was in fifth grade, a bunch of middle school teachers came over and explaned we needed to take a music class. We had the choice between general music, choir, or band. I had contemplated on choir and band because at the time I thought I could sing, but I also thought I should try something new. And I never really knew what to do. One day, my mom took me to the doctor's office to get a physical and my mother just talked and talked to the doctor. She then explained my conundrum about whether or not I should do band or choir. And my doctor looked at me and and said, "well, if you can already sing, then it'll only be worth wild to try something different. " and I knkw those words don't mean much now, but to a fifth grader, it did. I checked off band and had it ready to send when it was needed to be turned in. I began to think about what instrument I should play because we all know that's crucial. And someday before the due date of my slip, our local high school came by and they brought their jazz band. And I fell in love with it! Jazz seemed so wonderful to play and to listen to and it made me so happy like music had never done before. So when I walked into my middle school on the first day, I decided that it was only natural to go with a jazz type instrument and I went with the saxophone. I continue to play alto sax in both of my schools jazz bands. I play in the marching, the soon to be pep band, and any other band activities I could do. Honestly the best choice I've ever made with my life

How I got started with music. My brother started percussion when he was in sixth grade and I was in fourth grade. He'd come home and practice and I loved how he would make cool beats and music. I loved the way it sounded and, when he showed me how to play basic things, I was thrilled and felt like I was transported into another world. My brother taught me what he learned and then my parents got both my brother and I lessons because I had no teacher and the middle school band director actually got fired, so my brother had no teacher either. I started out on snare for about.... half a lesson. I didn't like just beating one drum and I'd seen the high schoolers play on the marimbas and I loved the way they sounded and still made rhythm. I was taught marimba all of fourth, fifth, and then in sixth grade, when I finally got a teacher in middle school band, I stopped lessons. (Skip backwards one year) My brother was invited, as a seventh grader, to be in the high school's marching band. I would hang around all the rehearsals and was just blown away by their dedication, passion, and the music they played. I wanted to do that. (Skip forward a couple years) Then, when my brother was an eighth grader and I was a sixth grader and we were both invited to be in the high school WGI SMA(Percussion Scholastic Marching A) ensemble. I loved the family feel, how passionate everybody was, and just making music. Then, when I was a seventh grader, I was invited to be in the high school's marching band, of course I said yes! The work was really hard, but I loved it. I marched cymbals and was also in the front ensemble on vibraphone. Then 8th grade, I marched bass drum, hated it, and then ninth grade, I was back in the front ensemble on center marimba and also section leader. My sophomore year of high school, I was center marimba and section leader of the front ensemble. Marching band is so addicting and I love it so much.
In 2010, Carolina Crown housed at my school for two days and I watched the front ensemble and knew I wanted to be a part of it. In 2011, I saw my first WGI PIW show and knew I was going to do that. So here I am, a sophomore in high school, addicted to keyboard, never played snare in my life, can't sight read if my life depended on it, and back row vibraphone in a WGI PIW ensemble. I'm considering looking for open spots in DCI, but it's a little late, but I know for certain I will be auditioning for DCI in 2017 and keep going in WGI until I age out. The amount of practice and hard work that goes into this isn't exactly work to me. It's an amazing passion and something I love to do. The practice and passion makes me better and someday I'm going to be center marimba in the best ensembles in the world.

I started band in fifth grade playing Trumpet. Over the years, I've also learned guitar and French Horn, I play Mellophone for marching band, I can do some bass guitar, and I've been learning some trombone, ukulele, and piano over time. I can do a little percussion, but I don't have the resources to actually practice and gain experience (unfortunately). Music is a huge thing for me and I love it so much, no matter what it is.

I realize that I'm about a year late to this but I used to play football and I actually had a scholarship to Wisconson University by my junior year but all my friends were in band so I marched senior year... I realized that it was my passion and I dropped the scholarship and decided to pursue a music ed major in college I'm auditioning for the Blue Stars this year and I'm really exited about it.

I got started playing trumpet in fifth grade. I had wanted to play a trumpet since I was a very young kid who played with a plastic toy trumpet. I love what I get to play and I wouldn't trade it for anything, I'm inspired by the music I play that makes me better. I am nowhere close to being fantastic, but that will never stop me.

I started on clarinet in the 6th grade when I got to middle-school, and since then I've picked up lots of different instruments. I don't necessarily play them like anything considered "well" xD, but I fell in love with all the different sounds that different instruments could make. I really wanted to do jazz so I learned sax, I really loved the flute part from Lord of the Rings, so I learned the flute. Now, I march piccolo with my university marching band, and play bassoon for their concert ensemble. It's been an awesome journey and I've met so many people that have inspired me for each instrument. Friends were more than happy to help me if I had a problem. It really wasn't too expensive as it goes as old friends who were no longer pursing music or band would donate or give me a cheap price to buy their old instruments. It's a huge part of my life to make music, and I love every second of it. My biggest inspiration however would have to be my grandma. She started playing piano at the age of 4 for her church, and has been playing the piano for nearly 73 years now. I'm so incredibly humbled and amazed at her skill. She wasn't "classically" trained, and played due to necessity for her small church. She still plays hymns for churches around our community, because it's something she loves to do and she always refuses to be compensated for it. She's an amazing woman, and I draw inspiration from her everyday!

I started percussion in 4th grade when it was offered in elementary school. I loved it in 4th grade, but then my band director retired. My 5th grade band director was terrible. She was a flute player, and knew practically nothing about drums. I failed to get this awesome solo I was supposed to get but they gave it to a rookie instead. My 5th grade band director resigned. In 6th grade, my new band director was even worse than my 5th grade teacher :( I was shoved behind stage during a concert because another percussionist wanted to play bass drum, and afterwards I questioned why I even did percussion. I mean, there were almost 30 percussionists (and only elementary school)! So I switched to mallet percussion, and couldn't read any sheet music, so I wrote out what each note was lol.
I found that I was beginning to enjoy practicing and playing an instrument that no one else played. After 2 months of playing my new instrument, I was invited to join the honors elementary band and successfully auditioned for jazz band, where I had no clue what in the world a vibraphone was.
In middle school, I joined marching band in the pit (and drum line for alternate performances). I also made jazz band and got first chair, beating all the 8th graders. At the end of my 7th grade year, I made drum major ( but only conducted one song) and pit captain. I've had a total of 5 solos, learned flute and am learning trumpet, and am learning how to play using 4 mallets. I am hoping to one day join a drum corps and be a composer and maybe band director. Time will tell, though.

Started piano young but it wasnt really my thing so i dropped it to take hand drum and drum kit lessons for a year. The next year, i started middle school and joined band as a percussionist. Honestly, we didnt learn anything specifically percussion related til high school. Now i am a freshman and finished marching season a few months ago. What inspires me to play is the feeling of playing something really hard and cool sounding correctly.

I started in 5th grade with trumpet, and I still play it now. I did well, but I didn't really get passionate about it until 8th grade, when I learned the difference between sound and music. I wanted to make music, so I've been working to improve ever since. It's really broadened my horizons, and without band, I wouldn't have gotten to know the people currently closest to me.

I started playing in our elementary school's Orff ensemble in 4th and 5th grade. I then eventually played percussion in Middle school and it was really boring until i found out that 8th graders could audition for drumline, Drumline was my favorite part of band in high school and then I made jazz band and our top concert ensemble. Being a senior next year, I definitely look forward to continuing my musical career and maybe even dabble in DCI (SoA)

I started music in 6th grade i started with the French horn but at the end of 7th grade i started with the Baritone and i love it I'm in 9th grade and the baritone section won most improved section compared to last year. I love both Concert and Marching band and i wish i could play in my schools jazz band but I don want to switch over to trombone. My school has 5 baritone players in marching and 4 baritone players in concert(The reason we lost one is because the 5th guy plays Baritone in marching but since the sousaphone was hurting his back he switch to baritone for marching and back to tuba during concert)

I am in agreement with the sentiment behind this video. Simply anyone who plays music is a musician. But if you really want to make a sustainable profession from music there are many things, both musical and otherwise, to consider. And these considerations will change depending on your instrument and style of music you play. If you play music in an orchestral setting, knowing sheet music is an imperative. If you are a session guitarist, there are other skills you require like figuring out harmony, playing by ear, reading chord charts, experimenting with tone, etc. Then you have the non musical factors like networking, being a team player, being proactive, etc. So to sum it up, being passionate and playing your instrument will not suffice if you want a career in music. One has to be clever in thinking how they can serve a particular need in society.

BAck in 4th grade i just start playing the trumpet just to get out of class. Even doe i couldn't afford an instrument. After 4th grade, I got really into music and kept playing for 6 years. Ever since then, I write arrangements, learning new brass instruments, and playing my instrument. I wanted to have a career in music, but my parents want me to forgot about that career and chose a different career. And maybe create a drum corp for kids who couldn't afford it.

I started my freshman year in High school. I had never done anything musical ever, I had watched my sister in the guard and i wanted to do it so bad. I tried out for the drum line (the first one in 7 years fro my school) and some how got the 3rd bass position. It is my drive towards excellence that keeps me going. I watched drum corps and instantly knew that that is the highest caliber for the activity i love doing. I have a goal to march drum corps and I just recently had my first audition, still waiting on results.

I started taking piano lessons when I was in 2nd grade. I loved the music, not so much the practicing... :) In 5th grade I started flute. My freshman year I took up saxophone to play in jazz band. I also added clarinet on the side. My sophomore year, I started piccolo for symphonic band. Before the summer of the year (junior year) I decided from watching DCI videos, attending a DCI show, and watching Jdfuncorps videos that I wanted to audition for a drum corps. Talked to my band director who had marched with the Cadets for a few years, and now I am learning mellophone. It is also a hope of mine to take up violin and join orchestra next year. I also still play piano on the side, as well as some trumpet.
I have also decided to pursue a career in music. Not sure where I'm going to school yet, but I'll either be a music performance or music education major. I'm very excited to take some big steps in the next few years of my life. They are steps that I would not be confident enough to take if it weren't for some fantastic teachers that I've encountered along my way.

I started off 6th grade in gym and art class, but after a week or so I got really bored of art class and a lot of my friends were in band so I decided to do that. Once I got to 8th grade I had pretty much decided I wanted to major in music and hope to one day become a professional musician. I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I play tuba in my school's wind ensemble and march sousaphone in our marching band.

I stated music in 5th grade on trumpet because I had just moved to a new school and first friend at that school also played so I decided why not. The next year I decided that music wasn't really my thing and I wasn't really good so I didn't participate in music until 7th grade where I switched to the French Horn about halfway through the year and I absolutely loved it (I didn't totally suck). I joined my middle school's honor band along with my friend who also switched from trumpet. In 8th grade I learned to play the tenor sax, which I played in jazz band but sadly I could play it in high school. This year I began my freshman year and joined my high school's marching band on Mellophone and it basically turned my life around because I loved it so much and I met so many great people. After the marching band season ended I didn't know what to do because I actually had free time, which I didn't like so I joined winter percussion on cymbals.

Started alto sax in 4th grade. I didn't suck at it so I kept on with it (although now I am on tenor). I was also playing soccer as a kid. As I got older, everyone got faster, and I got slower. I quit soccer and joined marching band in 8th grade, and never looked back. Nowadays, it's my music teacher that keeps me going. He's been nothing but a friend, mentor, advice-giver that taught me dedication is most important. Right now, my student teacher who will be leaving after winter break has taught me that it's not about me. It's about the music, how it makes you feel, and how it connects other people. That's a concept I never really understood until this year. Kind of leads me to like composition/arranging rather than performing.
