I played an instrument like this back in the 90's when I was a teenager. In my opinion it plays better than the 2 valve dynasty that replaced it. My best years as a contra player was behind this instrument. Do you still have it?
Is the purpose of the half step slide to get it to play a G flat? And is it possible to play a C below the staff? I'm just curious, our old school bugle corp here in ND uses all 2 valve bugles and contras as well. So they've purposely written out all Gflats and low Cs.
I can play a C below the staff and a Gb just fine. Are you talking about concert pitch or Drum Corps pitch? The slide's purpose is so you can play 2-3 valve combinations (as I don't have a third valve). No 1-3 combos, though...
I've just about got the horn understood. My biggest mistake was playing it basically like a Bb flat tuba, since all I ever played were Bb tubas. Like playing an F on the contra does not give me the same sound as I play an F on the Bb. Now when I play the contra, I usually play the Eb scale, helps me focus my pitch better. On anther note, I am currently in Slidell, LA on spring break, you wouldn't by chance have that horn still for sale or that K-90?
@@jomarluke Oh lol, so permanent residency in Macedonia I guess, are you ever thinking of selling the K-90? Or is it just locked away in some storage unit?
@@grg-mpgmusic7247 jein... There's a guy interested in this one, but he's not in AZ, where is located, and I can't ask for it to be shipped. If you're in AZ or can get there, let me know.
+jomarluke I sadly don't have the money to buy it right now as a poor High Schooler but I'm incredibly interested in G bugles (Drum Corps obsession). If its on sale still in a year so (for your sake I hope not) I would probably be able to have saved enough to pay for it. I know the general price for this type of instrument, but could perhaps just give an estimate?
+jomarluke The only concern is distance-- I know that long distance Craigslist deals are really not desirable and this would take a lot to ship. Probably eBay would be a better place for this; since it would be pretty difficult to ship I'd be willing to pay for the shipping cost. A question on the bugle-- could you tell me what year it was manufactured? It seems like it's in great condition. Unfortunately, at this exact moment I'm not going to be purchasing the instrument because I'll be out of town for over a month. However, once that's all done I think I'll be ready to go through with this if you're alright with the distance. thanks for the cooperation!
Really? That's insane. Alas I am but a simple percussionist. Love listening to brass though, especially the old G bugles. The contras had much more low end and growl than today's horns. Not that a concert-esque tuba sound is bad, but I much prefer some grit and growl to the bass voice. Bluecoats recently seem to have had a more aggressive tuba sound, though. But you can't ever hear it over a booming bass synth! 😠 😂
@@joshuaportillo4880 G. Imagine taking a BBb tuba, locking the third valve, and that's basically what you've got with notes and all. The slip slide helps a bit, but otherwise, just those notes you can play with the first and second valves. Imagine it being open bugle with the G, though.
Our group still uses all 3 and 4 valve G horns, soprano, mello, bari and contra.

I believe the correct term in drum corps world is "Q". It's the dynamic after "RFL".

Did you ever march anywhere?
Dominic O'Korn Yeah, Troopers 2001. I was a rook-out.
Awesome! Love the Troopers. Had they made the change to Bb yet in '01, or were they one of the few who held out and still used the G horns?
Dominic O'Korn we were marching G bugles. The contra line was using King K-90s.... And I was able to find a K-90 for sale in CA for $50. 😉
