That’s crazy - I arrived individually to the conclusion that +5 works just as well as +7 since it’s a circular system with a range of 12 pitches. I’m glad you mentioned it! It’s been so helpful in allowing for more options while maintaining harmonic compatibility.
I literally just bought mixed in key an hour ago, and then I see this upload haha what a coincidence! Keep up the good work Andrew, learning a lot from the course.
Just a little helpful tip to add on to what you said, make Smart Crates that show the key (+ - 2, 5, 7 keys) & Bpm (+ - 10 Bpm). But always try your ears, bc there are always exceptions to every rule.
Another cracking tutorial, simply explained. I've made some mediocre mixes terrible with key mismatches (vinyl mainly), so doing this through the software will not only help with that, but will make my playlist selection a lot easier.. Keep up the great work dude
Great video, helped me wrapped my head around the numerical values. I use a kaosillator to add samples and beats to my mixes and generally stick with the letter values as its easy to find the right key in the Koassilotor to play with.
Another movement on the wheel which works really well is going B->A whilst adding one - e.g. 3B->4A or 7B->8A or doing it the other way round from A->B whilst subtracting one - e.g. 6A->5B or 11A->10B as again, notes in those diagonal major / minor scales work well together. You can't however do the diagonal the other way round though, the outer Major 'B' track always has to be 1 less than the inner Minor 'A' track.
Thanks for sharing this one, I've studied the MIK website a lot years ago and knew of +2, 5 7 I'm not as sure these steps works as well in reverse though? Also when going from Major to minor you can deduct 3 then go to the inner wheel. So 6B to 3A or 2B to 11A.
Thanks again for the great tip +5. So you can -3, -1/ +1, +2, +5, +7. Alsow find changing one numer and a letter forwards works. For example 5a to 6b ore 6a to 7b. I discovered I like songs more in 7a.
First off - I've watched a few of your videos and they are super helpful as Rekordbox is totally new to me! As someone who's coming back to DJing from more than a decade away from it (Mixed in Key just came out at the end of when I left a decade ago), there's no substitute for training your ear (but Mixed in Key is def a hell of a substitute!). I'm doing much more producing and learning to play piano as well as in depth music theory training and what's going on at the end of the day whether it's +2, +5, +7 mixing is whether or not there are dissonant (clashing) notes being played between the tracks you are mixing together. That is, are there notes a half step away from each other causing a dissonant sound to the ear. Here's why a mix that "shouldn't work" actually does sound pleasing... If you're mixing +5 let's say, and you're mixing out of one track and the only harmonic element is a 3 note bassline with the notes C, F, and G and the track you're mixing into has those three notes in the scale, then the mix will sound perfectly harmonically in tune. If the bassline then adds a 4th note of G# which isn't in the next track's scale, that's where dissonance is suddenly introduced. Obviously it's ridiculous to think you can figure this out for every track you're going to play as a DJ which is why, at the end of the day you want to just train your ear so you can pick up on when stuff is fitting together well.
@@ClubReadyDJSchool last night I tried to "tick the master box" to enable that cool feature you showed us. I don't seem to have one to click on in the first place. Is this something I need to enable in preferences? For clarity- Yes, I'm using Rekordbox. Thanks again, mate. You're a legend!
Amazing golden tips. I'll know what to do tomorrow. I am listening music for 6 hours per day straight while I am working. Some days I am not vibing with any tracks and some days I am, adding loads of them to my playlist. It is quite a handful to keep a nice overview and get used to all of the tracks. What is a nice maximum number per folder? I am, having folders (categorized by "what should I play in different scenario's" , meaning sunset vibes, pool party, light funky house, late night tunes to darker techno) with 100+ tracks and I am afraid that some tracks will be forgotten this way. Love to hear some suggestions!
Hey Andrew it’s Michael Thanks for great vid!! Keep up the awesome work! That mixing in Key 🔑 sometimes is a terrible dilemma!! Meaning do I play the banger oh wait can’t it’s not in key haha This is for me the most difficult part of job to balance the keys, and keep the energy, plus bangers, plus requests simultaneously where there are seconds to react… Man talk about multi tasking Greetings from 🇺🇸
I am comparing the camelot wheel to a color wheel. +/- 1 would be the harmonic colors. The colors at the exact opposite of the wheel are the complimentary colors and suit nicely as well. In the carmelot wheel the "complimentary color/in this case key" would be +/- 6. So I am wondering why it's not +/- 6 (instead of 7 or 5)?! Would be curious what you think about it. PS: I absolutely love and enjoy your course :)
Great info Andrew, i also go into Preferences in Rekordbox under CDJ & Device check 'Key' is selected in the Active Sort options so when im searching playlists for the next track, on the display next to the list of tracks the Key will be Green on all harmonically compatible tracks to the one im playing on the Deck , like in Rekordbox environment in the video
I use VDJ 2021 for all of my prep work then the Denon Prime 4 for gigs. I've had MiK for about 12 years but these days I'm trying to shorten my workflow and quash so many of these packages that are multifunction and just taking up space/using time.
i also think +3 (or-3) and going to from A to B (or B to A) also works nicely in techno for instance because you keep the root and only switch from lets say Gminor to Gmajor, which also brings a cool mood change.
in theory when you go +5 or +7 you shift your scale by a semitone which would sound terrible when mixed together. however if you then would go up a semitone (with +5) you would end up in the same scale
Hi, the pioneer cdj3000 has a more advanced harmonic mixing system built in that incorporates more varations, than previous, perhaps you could do a video about that?
I use the +2 or +7 sometimes, or its -7 or -2 counterpart. It can be pulled off if the track you're fading into has a minimal instrumentation (drums / percussion and maybe a simple bassline). I always refer to this technique as "jump" Example: I"m playing a track in 12A and I have a track in 7A that I like and the 7A track has a minimal intro (drum loop, maybe a bassline that comes in by bar 4 or 8). If not, the two track may clash. I refer to that as a "jump 7". The Camelot wheel is nice but for me, it's not the be all, end all. There are times where I go by vibe / feel and that can at times take precedence over the Camelot wheel.
Amazing! How could I compare in parallel the key and bpm analysis of Rekordbox and the key and bpm analysis of Mixed in key in Rekordbox? Is it possible to have the information in separate tags but visible at the same time? ( How did you do for putting the MIK key info in the comment section of Rekordbox ) Thank you for your answers ! Didn't agree with the subscription change especially when I lost some of the effects that I had purchased. I do miss the ability to grid songs out perfectly though as rekordbox does this really well imo especially compared to vdj (which I can't understand how they haven't perfected this after twenty plus years of experience building the software) VDJ and stems have allowed my creativity to really enter a new level and I love the massive amount of options they provide to really dial in everything they way you want. so, why would you buy mixing in key when its free with recordbox?. The only thing i can think of is that it only does the songs in your collection and not your pendrive? am i right?:)
Genuinely curious (not trolling) - why is there all this controversy over Sync, and not about this program? To me, they both take out the need for DJs to learn the musical skills of... being a DJ (?). And it takes out all the fun tbh. Being able to hear all of this by ear, knowing your tracks intimately, hearing what naturally follows musically as the next track, is just as important as being able to stay in time and beat match by ear, if your aim is to be a professional. I'm surprised because Andrew quite rightly says in the course that every DJ should learn beat matching by ear (ie, zero grid, zero BPM display), and I agree. You'd want all the skills to be able to play a set with no screen displays, ultimately. Isn't this software basically the melodic version of hitting a sync button?
Im not to thrilled with the Energy feature. Mixing trance some tracks seem to make a massive drop yet the energy said its high energy. I would just rely on your ear for energy. Sound alone will guide you but dont waste your money just for that feature.

Hey Andrew thank you very much for this upload! Never knew about +5 but I am also curious what you and other people think about minus 2 (or +10 same thing) ? I tried -2 which personally for me seems to work and I think that would be logical since if you go say from 7A to 9A and it should work the other way around.
While in playlist, right click on the bar where it’s written “title”, “song name” “time”, etc. and check “key” also (and / or whatever else you want to be visible)
4:29 Let's talk like normal musicians and you are in Dm, then of course Am and Gm are next to it and F is the equivalent major. The latter is just something every musician should know. I don't understand why you couldn't minus 7 if you can plus 7? If steps are the same then why would it matter which way you're going? Also, it pays to realize Rekordbox' analysis of keys is markedly worse than Mixed In Key. Even though it can now display the keys in the same way MIK does, its accuracy leaves to be desired and if you want to be sure, buy the software. Unless this has recently changed, but as far as I'm aware they have been arguing for years figuring out a royalty deal so I don't expect MIK to be fully integrated into RB like it is in Serato
you can always try. you're totally right, that, if the steps are the same, it has to work both ways. and harmonically (music-theoretically) it does. but you will often notice that the tracks are transporting another mood or energy, which make them sound odd together
@@kdp.official Yeah I've been doing this ever since I got the program, of course the mood might chance but musically it's never really sounded wrong to my ears

Anyone find that mixed in key cant analyze some tracks?
Yes I have experienced that, you'd have to ask Mixed In Key if you wanted to know why, I am not sure :/
Hi
Sup Andrew! i'm having trouble getting my actual tracks, i've been streaming off soundcloud but there's so much latency and i also need GOOD wifi, so there's that.. What do you recommend for getting tunes and building a library?
Thanks!
Perhaps check out some DJ pools and download your tracks instead of renting them (streaming)
Mixed in key is more accurate than rekordbox

Also check out my indepth key analysis comparison (and why Mixed In Key is better than rekordbox or any other app out there):

Bonus! MIK 10 vs 8.5 compared = www.reddit.com/r/DJs/comments/n5byah/key_detection_comparison_mixed_in_key_10_vs_85/
What do you do when the mixed in key result is different than what rekordbox analyzed the key to be?
Use your ears.
