Shang-Chi's behind the scenes origin is extremely fascinating... but it's also a little racist.

I remember getting the Spider-Man issue where he has his big rematch against Black tarantula while the Rose returns in 2001 that actually showed a time-table for what would later be known as the MCU phase 1. They even talked about the castings process, and the most memorable thing was that, before they had decided on RDJ, Tom Cruise was apparently the most likely candidate to become Tony Stark.
I wonder how that would've played out.

Matthew Polly (author of Bruce Lee: a life. The most detailed biography of the man) he details that Ed Spielman created the character of Caine and co wrote the movie with Howard Frielander in 1969 that became the movie and subsequent tv series. It is true that Bruce Lee was considered for the role of Caine and was passed over for various reasons including Hollywood racism im sure. However a Warner Brothers executive didn’t want to lose Lee to Paramount and offered him a deal to make his own tv series with an advance ready to start. That series would have been Ah Sahm later retitled The Warrior. Lee was working on his movie The Big Boss and wanted to see how it performed first before signing the deal. Big Boss was a smash hit and Lee decided to continue a career in movies.
This a common misinterpretation of events that’s gone on for years.

Okay, so I kind of doubted Shang-Chi. Like, A LOT. I felt like the only reason they were using him was because they probably can't use Iron Fist for a bit.
But no, the new Shang-Chi movie isn't just a publicity stunt or a plan to have an Iron Fist like character in the MCU until it's been long enough so they can actually use Iron Fist, it's an attempt to bring back a formerly popular and beloved character and also do something a bit different for the start of the MCU's new era. And frankly? I think that's really cool!
Kind of excited to watch the movie after seeing this. It already looked like a fun time, so, yeah, this helped.

Great insight in this video. I've been a Shang-Chi fan for a while, ever since hearing he was Marvel's premiere martial artist. Little do fans know that he's actually been a huge fixture of the MU for a decades and has crossed paths with many of Marvel's top characters. The issues from the 1970s - 1980s can be problematic especially with the epitome of Yellow Peril as one of the characters. However, rereading those issues, I was surprised at how progressive they could be. Shang is involved in a prominent romantic relationship for instance with Leiko Wu. I was also surprised to hear how he was always in the periphery of Marvel's movie production. I'm glad that after all of this time, he's finally getting recognition both in the comics and especially the MCU.

He's fighting against the British, which is entirely understandable given that the Brits were first in line for the 'bend China over the table' train and they committed atrocities that make the worst of the insidious Doctor's actions look like children playing in the park. Fu Manchu is such a fascination topic to read about. The strangest thing being he’s somehow still copywrited. So many villains are inspired by him: the Mandrin, Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, Ra’s Al Ghul, and most famously Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon. If Taika Waititi’s Flash Gordon movie ever gets made I’m curious how he’ll handle Ming.

As a person of person of Chinese descent, I just want to ask: what's shang-chi's last name? It can't be Shang, because when you translates a Chinese person's Chinese name into English, and you put a hyphen between 2 words, it generally means the 2 words are 2 parts of their first name. Is it Fu? Is it Zu, as Zheng Zu, who, according marvel wiki, is his father? I searched through wikipedia and marvel wiki and couldn't find his last name. Peter Parker has a last name. Tony Stark has a last name. Even Thor has a last name. But Shang-Chi doesn't...just like Black Panther/T'Chaka, who also doesn't have a last name.

You've been taking creative writing lessons from the woman who had She-Hulk, a lawyer, crash a prisoner transport vehicle, possibly injuring if not killing the cops just so the criminal's victim can get revenge, possibly endangering the victim?
That aside, very interesting video. I really wish though we were getting a more grounded Shang film in the vein of gritty 70s martial arts grindhouse instead of what looks like a razzle dazzle of chi, though I'd like to see emphasis on his mastery of it to a respectable extent and a much better costume. Plus a team up film or even better, a TV series with Luke Cage and Iron Fist. But hopefully the movie will at least be fun.

    1) You forgot to mention that _Deadly Hands of Kung Fu_ was a B&W magazine. They had several B&W titles where they could have stories outside the limitations imposed by the Comics Code.
    2) I was reading _Master of Kung Fu_ as it was being published. Paul Gulacy was the artist for many issues, and his style was unique, appealing, and creative.
    3) It never made sense to me that they would license Fu Manchu. Most folks by then didn't know who he was. Culturally, those who did were beginning to view him (correctly) as a racist stereotype. Why spend money to tie one of your heroes to that mostly unknown baggage?
    4) Bruce Lee was up for the part of Caine in the _Kung Fu_ TV series. (He had also proposed _The Warrior_ as a television series about a martial artist in the old west.) Instead, the part went to David Carridine because ABC executives didn't want an Asian man to lead a TV series.

Given Shang Chi's origins as a character that was capitalizing on the popularity of Kung Fu martial arts-wise as well as starting out as a stereotype, I'm kind of surprised Marvel didn't create (as far as I'm aware) a stereotypical ninja character to encounter or team up with Shang Chi once the the 80's rolled around. I say this because if my martial arts movie history is accurate (and it's quite possible that I'm wrong) the 80's had ninjas pick up where Kung Fu movies left off in a manner of speaking.
I could easily see them making a Sho Kosugi look-alike or something to that effect. Would it be worth going down the stereotypical road all over again? Probably not. However, I do think it would be cool to see Shang Chi be the leader of his own hero team comprised entirely of martial artists of various styles from all over the world. (Some Examples: A British or Irish Boxer, a Russian Sambo fighter, a Kenjutsu or Kobudo master, a French Savateur, a Greek Pankration fighter, a Muay Thai or Muay Boran fighter, a Silat master, etc.)
Total side-bar: Speaking of the tv show, "Kung Fu," I've heard some interesting stories about its production that while they are likely only nuggets cranked out by the Hollywood rumor mill, they make for some interesting topics anyway. One that I could see as likely being true is that as the story goes Bruce Lee wrote a script for the pilot of the show, "Kung Fu," and auditioned to star in it. Here's the part with two different claims, one of which seems possible, the other not so much:
So the first version of the story is actually at least possible given the time period we're talking here. Supposedly Bruce Lee was turned down for the role because the general consensus was that American audiences wouldn't be receptive to a lead character who was Chinese or Asian in general for that matter. The second (and truly ridiculous version) was Bruce being turned down because he wasn't seen as being Chinese enough for the part!
I personally think that version of events is just a load of crap considering they cast a white dancer with no actual previous martial arts experience whatsoever, but it's still hilarious to think about. How or why would they turn down Bruce "Considered to be the Greatest Martial Artist of all Time," Lee for David Caradine, who was again, a white dancer with no training. The only martial arts (although not exactly considered martial anymore) experience he legitimately had that I've ever heard about was when he later took up Taijiquan.
Chuck Norris was even sited as having said that, "He (David Caradine) is as much a martial artist as I (Chuck Norris) am an actor." Good on Chuck for not taking himself too seriously in regards to his lack of formal acting chops, and although his comment sounds pretty scathing, as far as I have found it seems he may have been technically correct when questioning Cardine's lack of martial arts legitimacy.
I mean no disrespect to David Caradine, but I still can't help but call into question why anyone would take someone who isn't Chinese or even Asian with no martial arts experience over Bruce Lee to play a Shaolin Kung Fu master, hence why I think that version of the story has almost zero chance of being true. After all, because of Bruce Lee's popularity on the show, "The Green Hornet," they changed the title when it aired in various Asian counties as, "The Kato Show." (Kato being the character Bruce played on the show, "The Green Hornet," for anyone who might not know.)
Yes I recognize that being a popular secondary protagonist is still different from being a leading man, but I still think given what they were looking for in regards to casting the lead for Kung Fu they could've (and should have) taken the chance and put Lee in the role that was not only practically promised to him, but he was already (in my opinion) even overqualified for.
Besides, even though there were likely changes to the script, if the idea really was Bruce Lee's work in the first place then you would think that this would be even more reason to give him the part he wrote for. Regardless of what the truth might've been, the whole situation does admittedly make for an interesting topic of discussion.
