Allergies and atopic disease are on the rise. Especially food allergies in kids. A HUGE new study has looked at how changes to the microbiome can lead to allergies.

"All the Parts of You That Aren't You" sounds like some sort of John Green novel.
As a scientist in neurobiology I can confirm that microbiome is new hot 'target' in research for mechanisms such as gut-brain axis, but also more neurological diseases; possibly addiction, mood disorders and many more :)
Awesome!
As someone with chronic atopic dermatitis I just wanted to thank you and your fellow scientists for all the work you do,
My daughter has like 30 food allergies she shows no signs of growing out :(.
Can you please point me in the direction of possible treatments ?
Her pediatrician says avoid all allergens for a year. That didn't work. (She's 2.5)
Other medical voices say give her small amounts of the food.
She gets extreem eczema and hives.
Thanks for reading ❤
One possibility for reverse correlation: acid indigestion (often treated by PPIs) can be the result of _Helicobacter pylori._ _H pylori_ does a number of nasty things to the body. Perhaps what is being observed is the result of _H pylori_ infections.
Bacterial infections can also do several nasty things. Again, maybe what is being observed is the result of bacterial infections that are serious enough to require antibiotics.
It sounds like more research is needed to decide.
H pylori and SIBO?
Where's the JAMA podcast link? I don't see it in the description.
Could you perhaps do a video on sport nutrition and supplements. It's hard to find anything concise and evidence based. Beyond that, I don't even have the background knowledge to understand most of what I read.
Your triage is fantastic. The review of scientific literature and critical analysis is fantastic. I didn't know about the podcast, but I'll add that to my podcast list!
Does anyone have link to the study?
I don't seem to hear the title mentioned or authors anywhere
bogcom just got to the website from jama pediatrics, should be on the frontpage
It fits with the hygiene hypothesis

Just had a blood test and came back highly allergic to many foods I eat everyday!! Whaaaat
In line with research and my personal life. I had lots of ear infections in the first 2 years of life and was repeatedly given antibiotics. I then developed severe asthma and allergies. Connected...I think so but I can’t prove it. Luckily I mostly stopped having asthma attacks after a series of allergy desensitization shots.
How many shots and for what length of time?
Interesting topic!
Antibiotics are prescribed for babies who have thrush. I know because my son received medication for thrush. Which he got from me through breastfeeding. Very interesting because I'm wondering how many parents were informed that their kids medical records were being reviewed by Austin I know I sure wasn't and my kid was born in ft. Lewis Washington in 2011. Right near the tail end of this study.
Thrush is a *fungal* infection. If your doctor treated it with an antibiotic, change your doctor.
Loved this video.
Could you please apply captions to all of your videos? Only about half of the ones i have watched from you have them. UA-cam's auto captions are decent if that's all you can mange.
Mystee Pulcine I think the captions are added later. There are a handful of viewers who transcribe and then translate the captions into other languages
ja boy got an ad
im kinda dumb can someone help lol. maybe expalin in a simple way or something idk! hr explained rlly good btw im just dumb
I have a really interesting question that I would love to hear your opinion on. I was born with cat and pollen allergies. Now at the age of 32, I went vegan and after 90 days no longer had allergies at all. No more eczema, anxiety attacks, carpal tunnel or allergies. Is this because I no longer am ingesting antibiotics daily? Is my gut bacteria now mature and in much larger numbers since it is now allowed to thrive without antibiotics & its preferred alkaline environment? Because we are not omnivores? If we share 98% of DNA with chimps how are we not Frugivores like they are? If we are Omnivores, why are we not acidic like they are? Wouldn't that give us the ability to dissolve cholesterol rather than getting strokes and heart attacks?
Yet the Mediterranean diet, in which they eat fish and sometimes other meats, is considered one of the healthiest in the world. Maybe it’s moderation that’s makes the difference. Diet is a very personal thing though, what’s healthy for one person, like soy, may be deadly for another.
@@boopdoop2251 maybe it was before we polluted the waters that we grow fish in now. However now farmed and Lake caught fish are the most polluted thing you can eat and no matter who you are beans are the number one predictor of elderly survival!

Well I used to spike fevers when I was a baby - to the point where mom would panic, they'd pump antibiotics in me and well allergies to trees, grasses etc.
Why are we prescribing kids these drugs? Money.
The microbiome idea is not a theory it's merely a hypothesis. By misusing the word "theory" in the scientific context you are contributing to its misunderstanding by the public.
