The term "shit up my arse" springs to mind here. Our gut has a lot of sway over the human condition, so utilising the gut flora of a healthier being, or even going as far as to grow a healthy gut microbiome in a lab, could help resolve a lot of our problems. I thought it'd be important to mention this, specially as an autistic woman.
Hello, this comment is two months old but I was a bit curious. So, I just googled about this and a study entitled 'Role of the Gut Microbiome in Autism Spectrum Disorders' conducted by Joby Pulikkan, Agnisrota Mazumder, and Tony Grace (2019) came up. I didn't really digest it properly but from what I can understand, there are reported to be more gastrointestinal problems with people who have autism than with others who have different neurodevelopmental disorders. They present it could be because of the gut-brain axis (like the relationship between the gut and brain; how the health of these parts influence each other), as there is a gut microbiome, it is possible that these microorganisms could contribute to one's mental health. However, don't trust me. I encourage anyone reading this to read the research article yourselves.
So whenever I crave a certain type of food, it's because some bacteria in my gut that likes that kind of food is murdering all the other bacteria. That's nice to think about.

They game us, and we can game them back. When we layer our food with bites of sweet, and then bites of spicy, and then bites of vegetables, then no single bacteria can dominate, if they have to process all the mixed up food.
I'm so used to watching Kurzgesagt videos on things I don't know about that it made it an interesting experience to watch one on things I already know about. It really gives you some insight on how much of a nutshell the content really is. As always though, excellent video Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell.
Three brains when you consider that left and right hemispheres are perfectly functional independently when disconnected. In fact when they are disconnected procedurally the left hand will sometimes knock things off the right hand when it disagrees.
@@Hannikost I think you misinterpreted @Asta Buchmann's comment. She's not complaining about the science, what we take issue with is calling autism a disease, which isn't how psychology characterises it anymore - it is a neurodevelopmental disorder / difference, present (or at least genetically determined) from birth. If you're not born autistic you can't just "become" autistic, and if if you are autistic there is no "un-diseased" version of you that isn't autistic. You are wired differently.
@@whosacleverbirdie Ah my bad. In my language we use one word for anything like "illness", "disease", "sickness" etc and the definition of the word is that if it at all reduces your quality of life, it's (closely translated to) a "disorder" which for pretty much all diseases or words like it makes more sense to me. Autism is more often than not in our society something that makes life more stressful, so personally i love to use this definition for it since it's not wrong, but it's also not without any pain. I hope we can normalize most conditions as "conditions that doesn't fit into our way of life" rather than "wrongs"
Infographics Show got a _lot_ of facts wrong on many things, the best source they have consists of Wikipedia articles (not even the references), websites with zero credibility, and random blog posts. When they got things wrong they either ignore it, delete comments and silence any criticism, or straight up delete the video and pretend it never existed. Plus they use the same .png clip art pack all the time to the point where it's an eyesore. Putting Infographics Show on the same sentence with Kurzgesagt is a sin.
Any possibility of doing a video discussing Neurodiversity with updated information? Since autism was labeled in the video as a "disease," I think it might be helpful given how far we've come in understanding in the past 5 years. Sincerely, an autistic person who loves your videos!
DragonRaider 749 it’s not just that, I can’t speak for you specifically but in general it’s usually caused by multiple factors, this might just be one of them.
It could possibly be just that, but not necessarily - for example, SSRIs/SNRIs/NDRIs do work for some people (I know not all), and so it could be that even if they have a healthy microbiome, perhaps someone's brain isn't too efficient at keeping certain feel-good neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft - similar could be said in regard to the ~60/70% for whom Ketamine is effective: perhaps they need a restoration of certain connections. Or, it's environmental factors outside one's control in addition or just those alone, or a dash of each. Point being, depression can get pretty complex in terms of causes. I'm sorry you're dealing with it - I know how that goes and hope you're hanging in there.
XXXBIG-UZI-HORIZONTAL It’s still quite useless, we should have some classes that give life lessons as to how to cook, get a joke and pay taxes. Everyday things…
I've often heard that the appetite of the mother during pregnancy affects the food preferences of the child. For example, while my mom had me, she had a big craving for tomatoes. My dad even had to buy a pack of them while she was in the hospital. I personally love both tomatoes and ketchup, even from my childhood. Could this be due to the bacteria and immune system being carried over from my mom?
I love your videos, but I'd really appreciate you posting your sources somewhere. I use your videos as inspiration for a lot of my college papers, and I'd love to find the original articles that provide this information.
Have you guys ever thought about the fact that we are actually just a collection of millions of trillions of smaller individual organisms working together to survive? I think I'm having an existential crisis.
Yes, I'm almost sure about it. We do what they want and they want to survive. While we are thinking we are the ones who rule the world, in fact we are only made to serve the micro world - the owners of this planet.
i don't think autism should've been counted as a 'serious disease' alongside *cancer*. i say this as an autistic person who's become fascinated by your videos ever since i discovered them the other night. your videos always inspire me, but i don't want to know if you think my way of thinking/feeling is a problem.
Yeah, I was having a wonderful time watching the video when that popped out of nowhere. Talk about a blow to this content creator's credibility Autism isn't a disease, it's a different type of brain structure. Improving your gut health doesn't completely rewire your brain! Plus, it's insulting to lump neurodiversity into the same slide as cancer.
"Neurodiversity"? Like allergies are just a way of saying you have diverse tastes? Some allergies are extremely mild, manifesting as minor bouts of itchiness, but when people say "allergies" they *almost always* mean the life-threatening type that you need an EpiPen for. And yet even people with serious allergies are mostly independent and have a chance at living a somewhat normal life. Autism may be a blanket term but obviously given the context the video means the type of Autism that requires constant caregiver support. The fact that Autism is so widespread and yet can devolve into the type of illness that would seriously impair someone's quality of life (ASD Level 3) is one of the reasons why people are trying so hard to find out what's causing it.
Kurzgesagt, I was rewatching your first video earlier today! Even back in 2013 your videos were really, really good but comparing them to your latest ones, I have to emphasize heavily that you have made a stunning progress over the years! You are an inspiration to our channel and, I believe, to many others as well!
Thank you for the advice, Ideally Jekyl! We are actually trying to create a pen drawing effect and that's why we are using blue and red as main colors but we have been considering adding more colors as well

I'm so used to watching Kurzgesagt videos on things I don't know about that it made it an interesting experience to watch one on things I already know about. It really gives you some insight on how much of a nutshell the content really is.
As always though, excellent video Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell.
My gut feeling tells me that the gut can be considered a second brain communicating with our primary brain
Chow Tom I believe that would support the theory that males think with their stomach, and perhaps we may extend it some day to females as well.
So our body is basically two brains working together with a protective exoskeleton
Three brains when you consider that left and right hemispheres are perfectly functional independently when disconnected. In fact when they are disconnected procedurally the left hand will sometimes knock things off the right hand when it disagrees.
Julian Franco You are two. Well, three now.
Chow Tom I've actually heard that as a legitimate theory before
"...Serious diseases, such as autism..." I'm usually a really big fan of these videos, but that line in particular really rubs me the wrong way.
I was searching for a comment about this, thank you.
literally that was stupid of them
Things like gluten can actually trigger autism. If you're mad about it then sorry but that's science for you, autism is complex just like us
@@Hannikost I think you misinterpreted @Asta Buchmann's comment.

This is like a smarter infographics show
infographics is dumb, no comparison

When I can't buy strawberries every time I walk into the supermarket I get sad
yes

So, what kind of videos do you usually watch?
I've often heard that the appetite of the mother during pregnancy affects the food preferences of the child. For example, while my mom had me, she had a big craving for tomatoes. My dad even had to buy a pack of them while she was in the hospital. I personally love both tomatoes and ketchup, even from my childhood. Could this be due to the bacteria and immune system being carried over from my mom?
Yes, but not the immune system, just your bacterias.

Have you guys ever thought about the fact that we are actually just a collection of millions of trillions of smaller individual organisms working together to survive?
I think I'm having an existential crisis.
Or a paradigm shift. Which is good.
Yes, I'm almost sure about it. We do what they want and they want to survive. While we are thinking we are the ones who rule the world, in fact we are only made to serve the micro world - the owners of this planet.
We are a product of determinism
legit have been thinking this almost my whole life..

i don't think autism should've been counted as a 'serious disease' alongside *cancer*. i say this as an autistic person who's become fascinated by your videos ever since i discovered them the other night. your videos always inspire me, but i don't want to know if you think my way of thinking/feeling is a problem.
Yeah, I was having a wonderful time watching the video when that popped out of nowhere. Talk about a blow to this content creator's credibility
Autism isn't a disease, it's a different type of brain structure. Improving your gut health doesn't completely rewire your brain! Plus, it's insulting to lump neurodiversity into the same slide as cancer.
Right?? Like it’s a pretty gross thing to say. I was hoping I misheard them. Makes it sound like autism is something to be cured.
