a few other pointers to add to this: - if your guitar has a HH (two humbuckers) setup, play with it in the middle position with the neck pickup lowered (physically or with a knob) for a brighter tone - with a SSS (strat) setup, I recommend position 2 (bridge and middle pickup), with the tone slightly adjusted to avoid over-brightness. When John plays his silver sky for dead and co he usually uses that position. Position 3 also works to get more of the early Europe 72 sound - along with the amp settings mentioned, an eq pedal with the mids and treble boosted helps drastically. - a slight clean boost/overdrive is essential, but never too much gain to where it sounds distorted - always have the volume not entirely up, that brings out the higher tones without it being too piercing. Awesome video btw
We are all connected in this universe lol that's me too pretty much. That middle pickup is a god send when it comes to that thin yet solid sound. Perfect for rhythm and amazing for lead.

And, I agree about the 70's tone being his best sounds. By the mid 80's his ears were suffering from his epically loud stage volume. The first thing to go is your upper frequencies, which I think is why both he and Bob got ridiculously treble-y in the later years. Everything was eq'd to make up for the frequencies they couldn't hear anymore. Half the time it sounded like broken glass. Give me that '74 tone all day long!
Bob’s tone these days just sounds like a series of jangles and pops with some open strings thrown in for good measure lol. He should stay away from single coils altogether in my opinion, but I don’t picture him busting out the 335 too much at this point. That 335 tone was absolutely sublime and fit in the mix so well, man. I’d love nothing more than to see him at least dabble with his older 70s tone some in his various projects.
i may be wrong but i think 80s technology had alot to do with it. i can imagine all the soundboard and tech guys wanting to keep up with all the new inventions coming out in those days.
@@ryanmoore2779 dude I've never even thought about that before, but Jerry is ABSOLUTELY cracking up at Bob these days lmao. It is clear that his tone is the main problem for him now more than anything else. I mean, for the most part, his actual playing is still decent. You take his playing now and put it through his classic 335 tone and it would instantly sound so much better. What I would give to have seen a D&C show with bobby playing his old 335 through a classic Fender amp again. That tone would have done nothing but make the whole group sound better and more balanced. He definitely is way overcompensating his treble these days, as others here have said. Who knows though; maybe we will hear a classic Bobby tone again at some point.

Hey now I just wanted to add a little information regarding the Jerry Tone on songs like Shakedown, Estimated Prophet Ok Jerry used a Mu-Tron Envelope Filter these now are costing around $1000-$2000 for an original one. You can get really good Jerry tones out of a Fender Blues Jr. too. I dial up my reverb to about 5, mids & bass around 8 and treble at 12 o clock. Pair that with a compressor, clean overdrive and a Qtron and it’s awesome.
@southmeckstunna, did you mean to say treble at 12 o’clock or at 12 on the dial? 12 o’clock would be like 6.5 on the dial and most Jerry tone guys say treble all the way up. I just got a Blues Junior so I’d love your input. Thanks. And sweet video Davvy!

Thanks for the kind words! As long as people keep watching, I’ll keep posting. I’m actually going to be doing a series like that on our Patreon called “Rock My Soul” where I go over the most important dead songs to me.
that's a really great tone- id really love to hear about the mods on there. I dig the differences because it sound to me kinda like a combo jerry 70-72-78 mixed with bobbys best tone from 72- it works well. but i gotta disagree with a compressor being important (and im a compressor freak- fuckin love it- because I am not the pick attack master of control that jerry was) all tube... jerry only used the preamp section from the twin reverb (one of the least compressed- mid scooped- lowest gain guitar preamps ever) and routed it to a macintosh audiophile home stereo/club dj amp of the time. these were about as far as possible from a tube guitar power amp of the time (well really the fender twin was about as close as a guitar power section ever got to a mcintosh power amp back then) but jerry wanted LESS compression- the onboard buffer- brings just that little extra bit of dynamics. every part of his setup was designed to make his pick attack be more defined- part of the reason his mistakes are so obvious. but that's what separates everyone from jerry- its like he's playing to a and 8 armed conductor- like there's more than the normal 3 dimensional melody of articulation and tone and melody. like there's a second melody. its really awesome hearing mayer start to really go after it now- to hear somebody getting really good at that volume melody in ultra high resolution (LESS COMPRESSED) recordings. BUT- and this is HUGE for making a case for mild compression- then again if you're listening to old dead they did have the ultimate compression of their shows being recorded with vintage mics into vintage transformer based preamp boards and vintage PA systems and speakers (which they did everything they could (aka the wall of sound) to make them less compressed because everything was so inefficient and compressed back then) so now when you've got people playing an axe fx into a digital mixer with ultra clean digital power amps and ultra efficient crossovers on the sound system- and digital preamps. You start making a really big case for putting compression somewhere. Ill try to cobble together a spider v jerry tone with a post mic modeler compressor
Thanks for dropping the knowledge, but this video is for folks that don't have the money for the gear Jerry had. Which means, compression and tubes are very necessary. Especially to get the crispness and detail that Jerry had. Even with my compressor on, I can still get all that subtle flavor. It's still very sensitive and delicate, so you still have to have great pick and attack control. But again, I really appreciate you breaking it down like that, homie.
my budget jerry rig, used squier bullet $100, mojo tone pickguard HSS setup $300 , fender pro jr amp on sale $350, EHX Qtron mini sale $120, pigtronix class a boost sale $59, donner mini pedals, blues driver, reverb, octave and compressor $40 to 50 each
Thank you so much for all the GRATE dead content you’ve given us!! I’d love to see you do a video explaining how you get a fire on the mountain tone with the q tron!
Really enjoyed the video, but I do have a question for you. What compressor do you use, and how do you have is set up? I cant seem to get that range without getting that clicking sound when the pick hits the string. I did not notice this with you. Yours sounded big and smooth. Thanks man.
Paper thin?!? Paper thin?!?! How dare you! Lol just kidding, I stumbled on your channel last week and have been loving these vids. Have been super helpful, appreciate all of them ✌🏼
I built a tele a while back and I decided that imma add a middle humbucker so I can have an HHS pickup configuration like Jerry Garcia. I also am making the middle pickup a DiMarzio Super 2 which Garcia used. Hopefully that’s not copying Jerry too much lol
Toby & Davvy thanks. I don’t post on youtube except for one video but I’ll upload a video or something demoing the pickups and wiring if ya would like to see it when I finish
@@markiszak I did end up getting the pickups and installing them. The dimarzios sounds great imo but I do have to fix some wiring for the middle pickup as it cuts lout sometimes so I think there’s either a bad connection or somewhere where the circuit is short
His tone has changed through the years. But I think really the main reason he sounds the way he does is that's the Fender sound. That, not really overdriven but flavored clean sound. It's like it's just kissed with some overdrive. Just enough to get that sound.
I’d really like it if you did a Moonlight Midnight lesson…..not the basic chords but how Jerry picks in the first position cowboy chord spot and sings ……what is he picking as he’s singing the verses……that would be great…..!! Thanks
Hey Davvy, thanks for the great videos! I love your Jerry style leads! Eyes of the world especially for example. Could you do a video on what scales you use to play your lead guitar style. (or direct me toward a link if you've already done that) I know my pentatonic, blues, and a bit of major and minor scales, but I'd say my leads always sound like basic blues leads. How does one get that jerry style sound on leads?
A boss of, decent envelope filter and some delay going through a clean amp gets u close. I decent boost pedal or an old on low gain for that edge. I agree with lowering the bass . Tube amp is nice but u can do ok with a decent s amp.
Nice vid. Two things I'd add. Middle single coil or split coil is a hallmark of Jerry's tone. Second thing, I don't think he ever really used compression. But you sound great!
Thanks, man! And yeah, you’re absolutely right about all of that. Jerry was also loud as fuck on stage. Haha. A compressor may cut down on your dynamics a bit, but you also don’t have to kill yours and your band mate’s ears to get those highs you need out of it.
When you crank up your amp loud as hell and really get the tubes cooking, there’s a lot of natural compression. In that case a pedal would be overkill. A pedal is great for playing at lower volume but still getting lots of sustain and articulation..
Hey Davvy, thank you for this video. I'm curious if your compressor is an always on pedal for Jerry-esque tones? Compressors are a bit of a mystery to me, so I would greatly appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions on knob settings.
I used to use my compressor as an always on. I liked having more sustain and bite, but as others will tell you, Jerry didn’t really use compression. So for a more “pure” Jerry tone, no compressor. BUT, if you want to do kind of a mix between Jerry and Trey, compressor can give you a pretty cool tone. It just squashes your dynamic range. As far as settings, I would usually have everything around 12 o clock then tweak depending on taste. I really have to do an update on these videos soon. I’ve learned a lot since starting these.
Also, teach some dead songs! I'm still quite fresh to the dead and loving the vibe. I'm from Yorkshire in England, I don't know any dead heads unfortunately 😔
@@samrobinson141 learn how to play mixolydian and you can fake your way to Garcia. Also from the UK and I don't think there are many deadheads over here like there are in the US
Hey Now! I'm surprised that there aren't any "Jerry Garcia" settings on the fancy digital modeling amps that are all the rage now... Oh snap..u just dissed them...hahaha Nicely done brother
What part of Tennessee do u play in ? My brothers been living there for years and no much of a music guy but I’d love to come out and and listen. Like how u explain it, it’s more so giving a shout out to Jerry or using ideas of Jerry’s more then “PLAYING JERRY”
Sounds great but the Humbuckers don’t sound quite right to me. I like to use the middle pickup on my Strat and roll the tone down to about 6-7 with no compression and a klon instead of a tube screamer. Basically all the same amp settings though. Works great with my twin reverb.
Hey Davvy...and fellow mid pickup strat players.. I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on a APII from an online retailer (Wildwood) and I am wondering if you guys think the middle pickup on these new Strats will work to get close to this Jerry tone we are all looking to make our own???
Sounds pretty Jerry to me; You's need Jerry hands, and just playing at a arena volume and moving that kind of air; but for the pedestrian deadhead; you're pretty dialed in. I was watching some of your other vids, your hendrix chops are also on point. When I'm going for that jerry vibe on my SG I'm on the neck humbucker through a sweet spot on my wah pedal which compresses and brightens it up while keeping it mellow - counter intuitive as that sounds - into a deluxe reverb, also a bit a tube screamer, guitar volumes rolled back a bit. I fake the envelope filter with the wah as well.
i always like ur videos :). so, your blue marvel quit? thats ok, the 4 terns were the best part of that amp anyways......... i loved u using a behringer ...... u make thast rig sound better them all the other 10,000$ ones..... right on sir :)
Here’s the link to my rig rundown. I’ll be shooting an update soon. Also have a ton of dead lessons on the channel. So check those out too! ua-cam.com/video/bihku0aG6lw/v-deo.html
I recommend any guitar that feels good to you. ALSO, for Jerry sound a middle pickup and coil tapping ability are pretty standard. But you can still get a good throaty tone by running your neck and bridge pickups at the same time.
I don't know about the "Tube is a must" thing, man. I'm getting fantastically accurate tones out of nothing more than Hypergravity Comp.>Boost of the Dead>Q Tron+>Ditto X2 Looper>Roland JC22. There are so many options to get there... and I think it's kind of a dangerous, elitist misnomer to tell people they absolutely cant get there without a tube amp. It's just not true and I bet you turn off a lot of newcomers from seeking the Garcia tone by saying right off the bat that you cant get there without tubes.
I’m pretty far from an elitist, and I think you’d see that if you watched any of my other videos. I’m all about people doing what they want, so if it works for you, do it. This video is almost two years old, so I’m planning on doing an update to include different tube and non tube options. But thanks for letting me know how you feel, I guess.
@@TobyDavvy I'm not saying YOU are an elitist, I'm saying the idea that you can't get Garcia tone without tubes in your amp is elitist. I genuinely enjoy your content and I know you use all sorts of different gear... I just think being closed to anything besides tube power for Garcia tone is, well... maybe elitist isn't even the right word... misguiding? I didn't mean this as an insult to you, and again, I generally really dig your content. I look forward to your next video on the matter and I hope you include something about non-tube amp options. Like I said, I'm running a JC-22 right now, for multiple reasons- cheaper than a twin, I can run it super quiet at home and not have to deal withwimpy, underpushed tube sounds, and as a pedal platform, I can make it sound quite literally however I want. The Boost of the Dead pedal's Tiger buffer seems to be giving me some really nice, fat, clean tube-like response and if I had a blanket over my setup, most people wouldn't be able to tell it from a proper tube Jerry setup if it weren't for how utterly bad I am at guitar.
I’m still learning. We’re all still learning. This video was made before I was really willing to give digital/ solid state a chance. I’m honestly trying to work out a deal with Milkman for one of their The Amp 100s. Which is a tube preamp with a class D amplifier in a pedal setup. Nowhere near what I thought I’d play, but damn it, I want one.
Definitely agreed there. Jerry was running his fender pre's into behemoth headroom via his solid state power amp section. Guitar guru Steve kimock also has suggested jazz chorus for all sorts of applications in and around the clean guitar world - especially when compared to the majority of a million Twin reverbs out there. He's not saying that they're all better than fenders, just that it's pretty much way easier to get a great sound out of a random jazz chorus vs. a random fender twin. Anyways! Good thoughts. I think maybe OP misunderstood your part on tube amps being a necessity.. oh well, good video anyway
Nice video and playing. Understand what you are saying but the title of your video should read “ My tone when playing Garcia style.” I think in this video I here more Trey Tone than Jerry except when you use the Q tron.Trey uses a compressor and tube screamers, Where as Jerry did not. One component that would get you a little bit closer would be a JBL D, E, or K-120 Speaker. And another one would be a single coil middle pickup or a middle humbucker that can be coil tapped. I agree with not trying to copy Jerry and be yourself. Therefore your tone is very versatile for playing different styles of music. But again, the video does not represent the exact formula as stated in the title. Thanks
I appreciate your feedback, friend. However, I will not be changing the title because I do tell you how to get a “Jerry tone” out of any tube amp with pedals. Jerry may not have used green screamers, but there were compressors and really bad distortion/overdrive pedals. I hear your opinions though and respect them. Get out there and play some dead tunes!
Also, maybe go give Tennessee’s Dead a listen through the link in the description of the video to hear the tone in action and see what you think. I’m fond of our “He’s Gone” and “Scarlet/ Fire”.
Hey thanks for replying, just want to say I enjoyed the video. The main thing is guys like you are keeping the music going. I did check out your band and they sound great!
Sounded pretty close to Jerry Tone to me. Too bad it has to be tubes. I'm really kind of surprised at all the different tones that can come from a Katana. I just got one. Maybe, just maybe, someone will have a work around.
Bro! I think you can totally get something out of it. Just turn your highs and mids almost all the way up and your bass almost all the way down on a clean channel, then add some reverb and that should do you just fine!
Well, we are in Tennessee. And when we were workshopping names, One of the members said what about “Tennessee Jeds” and then it clicked to me, no, Tennessee’s Dead. It’s possessive, it’s like we are Tennessee’s Grateful Dead. Get it? What sucks about it, is that a band in Nashville stole our name a year after we formed. They go by Tennessee Dead, and when I approached them about changing it, cuz ya know, they stole it, they told me no, because it’s different and they had already copywrited the logo and bought a website domain. They also suck.
Reppin Knoxville here bubba! Just wanna say thanks man. I've learned so much from you. Loving that podcast too y'all. Keep killing it, and I'll let the crew know about you fellars.

But again, I really appreciate you breaking it down like that, homie.
my budget jerry rig, used squier bullet $100, mojo tone pickguard HSS setup $300 , fender pro jr amp on sale $350, EHX Qtron mini sale $120, pigtronix class a boost sale $59, donner mini pedals, blues driver, reverb, octave and compressor $40 to 50 each
Just got done watching your video,, well done thank you right to the point,, sounds like Jerry's right there with you
Thank you so much for all the GRATE dead content you’ve given us!!
You do you, baby girl! Sounds like a great plan. Let me know how it turns out!
Toby & Davvy thanks. I don’t post on youtube except for one video but I’ll upload a video or something demoing the pickups and wiring if ya would like to see it when I finish
@@thomashamilton914 were you able to add the dimarzio in the middle position and if so, how did it turn out for you?
@@markiszak I did end up getting the pickups and installing them. The dimarzios sounds great imo but I do have to fix some wiring for the middle pickup as it cuts lout sometimes so I think there’s either a bad connection or somewhere where the circuit is short
I attached a phase switch to control the middle pickup and I think it’s too tight a space for the wires so I’ll have to prolly fix that up sometime
Thank You!!! This is awesome!! Yes, So important to be your own player playing the music.
Just got a Qtron this year and it's a blast! Great video dude, thanks! Subscribed.
I would really love to know how you set up the effects chain and effects settings and amp settings more in depth! Hope to see a video of this soon!
Absolutely! Stay tuned! I’ll do a run down and a few song tutorials.
My Jerry Garcia Rig Rundown ua-cam.com/video/bihku0aG6lw/v-deo.html
The mixolydian scale is a great place to start
A boss of, decent envelope filter and some delay going through a clean amp gets u close. I decent boost pedal or an old on low gain for that edge. I agree with lowering the bass . Tube amp is nice but u can do ok with a decent s amp.
So helpful... you have great ability to educate ...
Nice guitar I have one just like it red color best sounding guitar I own thank you for the video
Great vid....dugg the message behind the tone and videos on your rig would be neato too. Thanks meeeaaaan!
Thank you for the helpful hints!!! You da man!!
Great job on getting Jerry's 'tone', or close to it...FYI on Scarlet, you're mixing Jerry's and Bobby's parts...
Thanks for the feedback, homie. And I’m aware that I’m mixing their parts. I think it sounds dope
@@TobyDavvy Thank you so much, this is very helpful!
Also, teach some dead songs! I'm still quite fresh to the dead and loving the vibe. I'm from Yorkshire in England, I don't know any dead heads unfortunately 😔
Any particular tune you’re interested in learning?
Althea! Ha, but any mate. Also, maybe just the scales and where to start with a his type of Garcia playing. Pleaseeeee ha. Thanks man
@@samrobinson141 learn how to play mixolydian and you can fake your way to Garcia. Also from the UK and I don't think there are many deadheads over here like there are in the US
Hey Now!
I'm surprised that there aren't any "Jerry Garcia" settings on the fancy digital modeling amps that are all the rage now...
Oh snap..u just dissed them...hahaha
Nicely done brother
Bugera v22...I've been looking at them... yours sounds sweet!
It’s all about working with what you got sometimes. You know?
Hey Davvy...and fellow mid pickup strat players.. I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on a APII from an online retailer (Wildwood) and I am wondering if you guys think the middle pickup on these new Strats will work to get close to this Jerry tone we are all looking to make our own???
QUESTION.... thank you for the tone settings on the amp. what about the treble/bass settings on the guitar?
What make it guitar is that? I love it.
What brand guitar?
here i am playing on a spider line 6 right when you said that
Sounds pretty Jerry to me; You's need Jerry hands, and just playing at a arena volume and moving that kind of air; but for the pedestrian deadhead; you're pretty dialed in.
I like your approach, that’s pretty neat. I need to do another one of these videos on my current setup. A lot has changed with what I’m doing.
Thanks for directing me here! Cheers
Sounds epic. Thanks for the tips!
Happy to oblige
It does help to have the right reverb.
Hey man, I absolutely love your cover of Dear Prudence...what scale are you playing D Major? Mixolidean?
Yessir, it’s mix of mix and pentatonic
Estimated prophet was FUCKING PERFECT. Great video
Thanks, Dave. You the man
How about that big fat crunchy tone from the 1971 Fillmore shows that gave us Skull and Roses?
i always like ur videos :). so, your blue marvel quit? thats ok, the 4 terns were the best part of that amp anyways......... i loved u using a behringer ...... u make thast rig sound better them all the other 10,000$ ones..... right on sir :)
Would love to see the breakdown of everything. Nice vid man!
Here’s the link to my rig rundown. I’ll be shooting an update soon. Also have a ton of dead lessons on the channel. So check those out too! ua-cam.com/video/bihku0aG6lw/v-deo.html
Great advice!
Amen, brother. This was an awesome video.
Thanks, homie!
Wow! Thank you. Can you come over and play?
Great tones! And great hair!
Thanks, homie!
Speed up the release on your compression, it's squashing your voice after the guitar triggers it can't hear you
Great vid thanks man
Thank you. New subscriber
You spoke about equipment, but what about the guitar? What guitar do you recommend?
I recommend any guitar that feels good to you. ALSO, for Jerry sound a middle pickup and coil tapping ability are pretty standard. But you can still get a good throaty tone by running your neck and bridge pickups at the same time.
My amp only has Treble, Bass and obviously volume what should I do for the treble?
Thanks, Davvy ! ! ! !
Dudeski again...... Thank you so much for sharing this advice man! Shit
@@TobyDavvy I wonder if that could bypass the digital preamp on something like a THR10.... that could make home practice a lot more satisfying.
Yep. Subscription engaged.
Nice video and playing. Understand what you are saying but the title of your video should read “ My tone when playing Garcia style.” I think in this video I here more Trey Tone than Jerry except when you use the
Q tron.Trey uses a compressor and tube screamers, Where as Jerry did not. One component that would
get you a little bit closer would be a JBL D, E, or K-120 Speaker. And another one would be a single coil middle pickup or a middle humbucker that can be coil tapped. I agree with not trying to copy Jerry and be yourself. Therefore your tone is very versatile for playing different styles of music. But again, the video
does not represent the exact formula as stated in the title.
Are we not gonna talk about how this guy is actually John Mayer with dreads???

Crying over my newly purchased Boss Katana 😂😂
Nice kephra :)
Dude I feel my ears going deaf watching this through a phone lol
Sounded pretty close to Jerry Tone to me. Too bad it has to be tubes. I'm really kind of surprised at all the different tones that can come from a Katana. I just got one. Maybe, just maybe, someone will have a work around.
Bro! I think you can totally get something out of it. Just turn your highs and mids almost all the way up and your bass almost all the way down on a clean channel, then add some reverb and that should do you just fine!
Hey man, what made y'all choose Tennessee is Dead?
