That looks a yum crab curry. Just to share something that my mom used to do for tye crab curry. Roast some coconut, rice together with fennel and cardamom. Grind to a paste add to the coconut milk and add to the curry. It will give a rich flavour and also thickness to the curry.. try this Anoma the next time you make a crab 🦀curry
Thanks grandma . I like to cook im ten yaers older . This is my momies phone . My mommy made this crab curry it was super yummy gradma again thankyou . Im from colombo .
Thank you so much for this recipe. Looks absolutely delicious! Could you please tell me the best way to season clay pots before using it for the 1st time? Many thanks!
Good one Anoma. Preparation with lagoon crabs instead gives a more unique taste for a Jaffna crab curry. Using moringa leaves is a must for their (jaffna) crab curries. Those leaves have more vitamin C than in oranges and more K (Potassium) than in bananas & plus plenty of antioxidants. You are right Anoma, you should use gingerly oil instead of sesame oil. (Process of making gingerly oil is slightly different to the latter and it has an Amber colour). Great recipe. All the Best, Stay safe. Bernard from Solomon Islands

Wonderful presentation. I have been living in Jaffna for the past 3+ years due to work. Love Jaffna food, full of flavours. I wanted of having aunty in North for her to do a program of learning their authentic food and to show them the preperation of Sinhala food but we had to transfer back to western province unfortunately. Now no idea when such will be possible with Covid. Really appreciate what you are doing on your channel, people love amazing Jaffna food. They use Gingerly oil (තල තෙල්) lots of cumin seeds when cooking day today. Their coconut sambol different from Sinhalese, that is very tasty too. With crab curry they always prepare Spinach (a different preperation from Sinhalese) Crabs available in north are blue/ purple color, soft shell crabs unlike what we mostly get in western province (Colombo we get gray color crab) that is also one secret for the unique taste. Crab curry and pittu is a very popular dinner combination in North. Lovely presentation, all the very best with your future endeavours
That’s awesome to have a taste of Jaffna food. Surely the cuisine is very unique and so tasty. Thank you for the comment! Few things to note. We use more of fennel seeds (not cumin) and only time we use spinach is by adding into dal curry. We don’t have any recipes with spinach other than cooking with dal. I guess you are talking about other leaves. Yes crab curry with puttu is a signature food in Jaffna!
@@premisiva9049 you have corrected me with fennel. Thank you. I have eaten spinach without dhal, a different preperation from Sinhalese many times during my stay in Jaffna. Not really appealing it but yes i ate 😊 Thank you very much anyway
@@TheCrystalsss Okay now I understand which one you are talking about. The one you ate is not spinach it’s Amaranth leaves. If it’s like a gravy kind of curry (not dry) with coconut milk then it’s Amaranth. That’s the leaves we cook with fish curry or any seafood curry in Jaffna. And in Sri Lanka usually amaranth is mistakenly called as spinach. Amaranth is thampala and spinach is nivithi in Sinhala. I’m very sure what you ate was thampala or ‘mulaikeerai’ in Tamil. We use nivithi/spinach/‘pasali’ in Tamil only in dal curry. I’m glad you have tasted different Jaffna curries.
@@premisiva9049 yesh you are very correct about the curry i was talking about 😊 Thank you for letting me know "amaranath leaves" never knew that I have tasted many Jaffna food and in so love with them. Highly recommend anybody of visiting beautiful Northern part of the country and not to forget to try all all their authentic food. Thank you for correcting me @Premi
@@TheCrystalsss You are very welcome dear. I lived in Colombo whole time & had my postgraduate studies in Kandy so I was able to really eat variety of Sinhala food. They are unique in their own taste too. When I was working, during every lunch break I & my Sinhala colleagues used to eat together. So I was able to taste variety of homemade food daily for more than a year. And they enjoyed my mother’s homemade Jaffna food too. 😃 Nice memories. Now I’m in USA, and I miss everything.
Hi Aunty.. I love your recipes and presentation style. I have watched lots of you tube cookery programs. But your one is very special for me. Are you from Down South? From which city? Keep up your good work
Please make a note, Jaffna crab curry is never without murunka leaves. Original curry you don’t temper you mix with all the incidents and towards the end you put the murunka leaves.
