  • If you visit Warsaw you're guaranteed to find many places bearing the name of Frederic Chopin, a world famous Polish composer. Chopin was born in a small town near Warsaw in 1810 and lived in Warsaw for about twenty years before moving to Paris where he spent the rest of his life and died in 1849. Upon his death, he requested that his heart be brought back to Warsaw where it now rests in the wall of Holy Cross Church. In this video, we visit the Fryderyk Chopin Museum to learn more about the life and work of this musical genius and favourite son of Warsaw.
Huge thank you to the Polish Tourism Organization for having us!

Eileen here is a gift for you. The best pianist on Earth, our polish pride, genius Mr. Rafał Blechcz (we call him Chopin reincarnated because he even looks like Ch. ) playing Chopin Sonata N°3. Sounds bold I know but please listen to it. Find him on better quality streams or just buy his CDs. You will not regret :)

He was less introverted than people think. He was into comedy acting and liked playing mimicry with his freinds. People just seem to romaticise him a lot and make him seem more inward than he actually was.

Great video, didn’t know much about Chopin before watching these last couple of videos, but really interesting to learn some more. Sad that he died relatively young, seems older when you look at his portraits. Years ago I passed by the house where he and George Sand stayed in Majorca, seems that was only for a couple of years though. Will have to listen to some more of his music.

I hope you enjoy his music, Shaun! I obviously love Chopin already but it was a real treat to be in Chopin city and surrounded by so much of his music and life. That's cool you passed the house where they stayed. I think he wrote a lot of music during their trips to France as well.

To me he was a painter. His brush and canvas was piano and music.
When I and I think many Poles listen to his music we see Polish country side with golden wheat crops and poppy flowers in between woods and his heartache for lost motherland.
Also you could go to the church of Saint Cross where his heart was placed, his body was laid down in Pere Lacheise cementary in Paris
Polish tragic history imo is best expressed in Chopin’s the Revolutionary Etude. Gives me goosebumps

Fun Fact: Chopin left Poland for France (his parents sent him to France) because of the polish November Uprising against Russians. He composed later the "Revolutionary Etude" inspired by his anger and sadness after the fall of the uprising. Also Russians destroyed his piano in 1863 (during the polish January Uprising against Russians) while rifling the Zamoyski family's palace and a polish poet whose name was Cyprian Kamil Norwid wrote a poem about it "Fortepian Szopena" - it's from this poem:
„I znów widzę, acz dymem oślepian,
    Jak przez ganku kolumny
    Sprzęt podobny do trumny
    Wydźwigają… runął… runął… - Twój fortepian!
    [...]
Lecz Ty - lecz ja? Uderzmy w sądne pienie,
    Nawołując: „Ciesz się, późny wnuku!
    Jękły - głuche kamienie:
    Ideał - sięgnął bruku - -”."

I wonder if Chopin skipped town to avoid the 1830 uprising. Those hands were not fit to fire a rifle.

No. He actually wanted to fight in the Uprising but his friends persuaded him to leave.

He didn't skip the town to avoid the 1830 uprising. He left Warsaw one month before the uprising started. The uprising started as a plot of a limited number of Polish officers against the Russian Prince Konstanty and for sure Chopin was not privy to the plans of conspirators. He wanted to come back and fight but was dissuaded by his family and friends afraid of him due to his poor health condition. His mood of this time is presented in Scherzo h-moll op. 20 known among others for the inclusion of the "Lulajże Jezuniu" carol.
