    A similar salt mine for Wieliczka, and located near, but 40 years older, is the salt mine in Bochnia, founded in 1248. Till the end of the eighteenth century both mines constituted one enterprise. The exploitation of its salt deposits in Bochnia was completely stopped only in 1996. You can also tour it. The specificity of this mine is the underground sanatorium for people with respiratory and pulmonary allergic diseases. Patients spend nights at Ważyn Chamber, located at a depth of about 250 meters and having a specific microclimate. An underground sports field with an area of almost 300 m2 and a mini playground are attractions for those who prefer active leisure.

    Legend says that a Hungarian princess promised to the Polish king threw a ring into a salt mine in Hungary. On the way to Krakow she made a stop in Wieliczka. The service awakened her, scared by a rumble from below the ground. She immediately ordered them to dig in this place and there they extracted large lumps of salt. after shattering in the middle of the salt block they found a ring thrown into a mine in Hungary

    Oh wow, I've not two weeks ago! It was super interesting and the guide had this rather deadpan kind of humor which kept things from getting too stale. He kept telling about how we can safely lick the walls to test if it was really salt, while also reminding us that the salt mines are visited by thousands of visitors, who probably may have done the exact same thing as we were going to (licking the salt). I licked it a bit. It was indeed salt.

    I was there 3 years ago. I got crazy dizy and out of breath from descending those steps. Those steps go on forever. You are not expecting the steps to wind down as long as they do. It seem like 10 flights and turns into 100. Amazin place tho. loved the chapel n sculpture of PJP. We met a couple from Chicago there. Of course, they were visiting the homeland. We're from PA. Polish descent tho. Poland is ballin. Love the country. People are friendly. I can't wait to return. I really want to explore Krakow more. ANd, go up country to the baltic region.

    Being there for the first time as a kid on a school trip, probably somewhere in the late 1970s, walking at the end of the group I got lost on my way to the elevator, of course... There was some panic, more among my teachers and guides than me, but it all ended well after 45 minutes or so. At that time, everything wasn't marked and lit so well down there, and from time to time you could turn and enter into a wrong corridor. As far as I remember, the mine was still in commercial use back then, and salt was produced there until late 1990's. Anyway - I was back to Wieliczka few times in my life, and I always advice my friends who plan to visit Poland to go there.
    BTW - great job, thank you!

    Wanna know another uses of old salt mines in Poland? :) Inowroclaw city, salt mines below whole city, flooded with water several decades ago. Now they sell this water as mineral water in bottles, it has as many minerals as a dietary supplement :)

  • @LukaszSebastian
    @LukaszSebastian 4 роки тому +7

    Some people compare Wieliczka mines to mines of Moria 😄 The tour only shows a small fraction of the mine, with salt chapels, salt statues, salt halls, old mining equipments and constructions, underground super salty lakes and more, and with restaurants, cinema and shops at the end. There is also an underground museum, including a museum of art (it's an additional tour you can take without extra charge), and completely separate geological and speleological tour into a more wild parts of the mine (its more expensive and much longer). There is even an underground sanatorium for people with asthma. And all of that is still a smal fraction of the whole mine, some of the rest isn't save enough, or have to much water, to little oxygen or is simply being preserved. And there are more mines like this in Poland (salt mines, silver mines, coal mines etc.), opened as a tourist and educational attractions, but Wieliczka is the largest one (at least the part available for tourists).

    • @mskk2004
      @mskk2004 Рік тому

      Not to mention that the tourist route only goes through a fraction of the entire mine. There's more. The miner's route leads through parts of the mine where typical visitor wouldn't go. If you choose it, you'll get all the miner's equipment, like hard hat, lamp, gas detector, delve into darkness wearing miner's clothes and do miner's tasks on the route. Very exciting. Check that up too.
      And besides Wieliczka, there's another salt mine nearby, in Bochnia. It is worth seeing too, it has attractions that Wieliczka doesn't, like underground river with boats.
