Preparing for first coastal voyage
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 сер 2020
- This week was an extremely busy one getting my steel trawler Renko ready for a coastal voyage down to sydney for a few days. I cleaned and painting the bilge, installed the ballast lead ingots in the lazarette, installed some LED lighting, a VHF radio and a safety chain across the boarding opening. The seats have also been recovered with new vinyl and the old work bench cleared off the deck ready to head off on Tuesday morning. Video on the trip when I return next weekend! :)

Nothing like the inspiration of a deadline. Nice work for a 'boring' week that was a lot of one percenters
So true!
So many hours on that boat working and it’s still like if you’re started yesterday.
For sure.
Have fun on the trip and don’t forget the toilet paper. 👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
Vicki never forgets that type of thing! :)
Protip for drilling holes: hold a small dust pan up against the wall to catch all the filings/sawdust/gypsum that the drill bit creates.
You Will take us along on this better shake down cruise won't ya?
Honestly really excited to know you are starting to get to enjoy the fruit of you labours.
Enjoy!!
Thanks mate, will do some filming for sure.

Good To Hear!!
Holy cats! Look at all the stuff you did! Very nice. Such pleasing progress. I can tell you're excited to take it out and have a little fun. Enjoy!
Thanks Randy.
I really enjoy the little backyard business you do after the video, it's quite neat
Glad you enjoy it!
A simple solution for the flag, is to attach an eye bolt to the roof, and another to the mast (or even use the awning attachment point). Then run a string from the lower eye-bolt to the eye-bolt on the mast and back down, and add an extra foot or so. On each end of this string put a 'flag clip'. You can then attach the flag to the flag-clips and hoist it to the top of the mast. You can also clip the two flag-clips together to stop the line flapping when not in use.
Sounds like a good system. :)
Awesome progress. So true about having a deadline. Marine engineering is fascinating and with lorikeets and chickens t'boot this is perfect Sunday chill viewing. Thanks Stu.
My 24ft trailerable Texas lake cruiser is much different but oh how fascinating this ride with Renko has been. Like living a dream along with you Stu. I could no longer watch without being a part. Just ordered my Renko t-shirt. Hey everyone, all sizes are available. Click on into the shop and become a part and you will feel amazing as you keep up!
Thanks Todd, appreciate you supporting the channel! :)
sending hot sparks down the fuel tank breather like a boss 😎
Never a boring video from you. I hope your thumb heals fully. Your a smart guy able to work, design, fix install repair it seems anything. I hope you have a great trip. Keep safe diving. I’m a bit like you pushing physically even when injured so I understand. But carful you know. Thanks for sharing I have been watching from the beginning. Bonzo Mate!! 👍🇺🇸
Thanks mate, glad you enoyed it. :)
Hi Stu, Good luck and have fun on the forthcoming trip. I plumbed my primer bulb in parallel with the fuel feed pipe line to the engine after the filters. In that line you need two tees with an isolating valve between them, there is a loop of clear hose (so you can see the air) connected to each tee with the primer bulb in the vertical up section of the loop, there is an isolating valve at each end of the loop before the tees. When priming, the valve between the two tees is closed and the other two valves are open, once primed the valve positions are reversed enabling the fuel to by-pass the primer bulb. I also installed a Murphy vacuum switchgauge at the helm so I can check my filter condition and have an adjustable audible and visual alarm that I have set to actuate at 7" Hg before the filters need changing at 10" Hg.
I hope that helps, cheers from Doug in NZ.
Yes, I think that is a great way to go. I'll have to gather all the bits and install it that way one day.
I'd love to see a video of the mooring contractor working with that interesting barge
I have been meaning to talk to Vic about that.
Ok, so this better be one heck of an adventure with all the hustle you put in this week!!! Great vid, glad you are buttoning up all the small jobs, boat looks real good.
Thanks Michael.
Rory - drill legend.
Los of odds and ends cleared up. Well done!
Good to see you are nearly there. The trip will be a good chance to see what does not work before you go to far offshore Be careful in the bulge with a generator running,we don't want anything to happen to you.
Yes, a short shakedown cruise is a great way to see what works, what doesn't, what's missing etc.
If it weren’t for deadlines, nothing would get done. Great motivator.
They sure are.
Enjoy the voyage today!
No need to apologize for video content. I enjoy seeing you catch up on all the little tasks. You get a very real feeling of satisfaction as each is ‘ticked’ off the list. Plus, I get to see more of your boat - all the nooks and crannies.
I appreciate that!
I am greatly enjoying watching these, thank you for posting them.
Give the girls clean beds for 4 egg's....Yaaa that will work....Enjoy your trip....Thanks mate..!
Thanks Steve.
Wow! All coming together! Very happy for you!
Thanks a bunch!
For cables in weelhouse take a plastic cable channel and glue it on double stick tape. You will always can acess them, change or add another. If surface is prepared carefully double stick tape will hold untill weelhouse will rust off :)
Yes, I added a couple of double sided tape clips for now, but a channel would be great.
Great removal tool, Sawsall
Nice one... You should have put a bed in there from the start.. you know, for strategic napping... very important during excessive boat work... 🙂
All the best!from New York! -Renegade
Thats a very friendly lorikeet! Great vid 👌
It really is!
nothing like a deadline to get stuff done! :) Do film the trip, if it's not too much of a pain in the whatsit. Would love to see Renko out on a voyage
For sure, if I'm not under the pump I don't like to push myself too hard! Will definitely film as much of the trip as I can. Sitting on a mooring near the zoo looking at the Harbour Bridge right now. :)
re the mounting of the led ingots
- if you put every second ingot piece upside down, they will nest into each other nicely and form a tight pack that will be easier to secure with the wire
"Vitamin A"... "get the right tools for this"... loved it!
Lots of tedious work, nice job Stu!!! Enjoy you guys trip and be Safe!!!
Thanks 👍
Great job! Hope you enjoy the trip! Catch plenty of fish! Dig up some treasure and enjoy some diving!
Thanks! Will do!
Noice video; never underguesstimate the entertainment value of your little jobs, never mind the odd tips the rest of us boat fiddlers pick up along the way. Of course the odd Stu-ism doesn't do any harm either. Really looking forward to hearing more about the trip.
Thanks mate.
not only is there no rest for the wicked, the way of the transgressor is hard. BTW Stu have a safe trip! and enjoy yourself bro. Eh!
Thanks mate.
So, glad you included the birds they are beauties... and Daffey and her crew.... They are part of the classic atmosphere around you , and I can dig it....
Have Fun Be Safe
Love your videos. I'm learning a lot from you about marine maintenance. Keep it up. Thank you
Safe travels Stu & Vicki
Thank you. :)
Favourite parts: 1) Vitamin - (A)cetone and 2) nav light removal tool. Thanks for the update Stu. Very happy for you heading out tomorrow. Take care hope it’s a fantastic outing!!
Fair winds and following seas, Stu...
Thanks mate.
I really like the way you end your vids
Thanks Tim.
Laughed at the “tools to remove this...” I was thinking a hammer. You were much more refined with a saw! 😀
So was i 😂
went through the fix spot and nut sizes, then the saw comes out. The jokes are subtle but there’s quite a few of them.
I was thinking the same exact thing
At first I figured he would GAS Wrench-all to remove the nav light, but a Saw-all is quicker in every aspect. Ya, and the Vitamin A (aka Acetone)
After much listening to Stu, I now feel I can speak a fair amount of Straya speak. If I'm ever down under and need to order razor blades I'll pop in to a Servo and just say, "rise up lights" please!
LOL
You would be surprised how entertaining this "boring" fussing around is to us armchair-bound viewers. Remember, you are fixing up a boat. You are on a boat. A boat. Getting ready to go out on the sea. In a boat.
A fair point, made very poetically. :)
exactly Cliff ! :)
AvE has made a whole channel doing just that.
...good one, bon voyage. have a great week and keep safe...
Thanks 👍
Have a safe trip down in Sydney harbour Stu. I was a couple of mile behind behind you as you were leaving Broken Bay today as I was returning to Pittwater after a couple of nights up Smiths Creek. Enjoy the beautiful weather and RENKO looked sweet heading out to sea 😎
Thanks mate! I hope you enjoyed your time in Smith's Creek. It's a beautiful spot.
Mate you certainly cracked on with all that work. Obviously your ahead of video in real time but, P & S running lights you can get a set of battery operated as temp thing or as an emergency set if main lights go PT. Looking for ward to the trip video. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Great video. It’s all coming together for you.
Thanks Allan. :)
hey stu! that was me waving at you as you approached the spit bridge. boats looking good.
Thanks Paul! :)
Wide angle is good........The colour of that sky.........That's one thing I miss about Australia, the intensity of the sun, and the light.
love this vid, and I love your chickens.
Thanks Rob.
On the subject of the Diver "A flag," I use a sheet of plastic Corrugated board, one meter in height by one and a half meters in length in the pattern of the code flag A. I also have temporary NUC lights rigged up that can be hauled aloft for night work. This will ensure that you comply with Colregs which is important if you are engaged in commercial workboat operations.
Yes, will look into adding the extra lights when we do all the mast lights.
Hahahaha, was expecting a screwdriver and a wrench, got the sawzall. Well done sir 🤣
During the drill disassembly I totally expected you to pull apart the old one and then open a box and pull out a new drill. Glad you didn't have to spent the coin on a new one.
That would have been nice! It was very kind of Rory to send me the parts.
All right man,lovely bird
"Renko" sounds like a 70's Crime Drama Starring Frank Cannon! !
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I mean 😡😡😡
Great video and working Stu hope you have a great trip. Jeff in LA USA
Thanks 👍
Enjoy your trip and hope the boat runs great!
Thanks, will do!
Hello from Marseille, France.
Hello!
To prevent corrosion under the bilge I would suggest you contain it in a basic wooden box
Could be a good option.
You can try twisting the chain to take up slack, the actual door is is the best thing
There's nothing like a deadline to get you motivated to get stuff done.
Absolutely.
You think you have a lot to do now. Wait till you come back and laundry list of stuff you want to do after you stay on it. Haha. Absolutely love the videos Stu! I would totally come and say hi and even help a bit if I lived in Australia. Cheers mate!!
You dead right. Time staying over night will give me a huge list of thing I need to change, remove, improve, add. It will be long!
If I ended up on dessert Island I would want Stu there for the practicalities and humour, great vid mate.
mmm an island of dessert, lots of ice cream and cake!
Have a great maiden voyage Stu! Try not to hit any icebergs while you're at it, will ya?
I’ll try!
Busy as a bee stew, good progress in prep for the trip. I hope all goes well and is trouble free. Looking forward to seeing trip Video
"I'll go get the tools" Out comes the electric saw hahaha
I got tired just watching.... Here's wishing you a very good trip.
Enjoy your trip
30:45 - You guys are blessed with the coolest birds. Here in North America none are as inquisitive and as beautiful. Probably feels common to you. Nice bit of work you did this video, enjoy the trip
geekdomo rainbow lorikeets are beautiful... and far too damn noisy!! But yes... we have pretty amazing parrots.
We've got them in Florida, believe me it is no blessing when they are nesting in the trees outside your bedroom windows.
@geekdomo they are Rainbow Lorikeets, also known as Eastern Lorikeets, and are just everywhere on the East Coast of Australia.
(Stu also occasionally has a rarer Parrot, the King Parrot, which in the sexes is easy to differentiate, the male has a bright read head, while the female has a drab green head).
Australia is home to seven species of lorikeet, of which the rainbow lorikeet is the best known.
The Budgerigar known across the world now is native to Australia, living in mostly desert areas in flocks up to 10,000 strong.
Living primarily in the desert,
they are always looking for water.
Budgerigars have an extensive natural range - they're found through most of Australia's interior west of the Great Dividing Range. They're not found in Tasmania, Cape York, or the coastal areas of eastern, northern or south-western Australia. 🦘🇦🇺👍
@@kevlarandchrome I grew up in Coral Springs (1973-1989) and I recall some parrot types. It may have gotten worse since I left. People do release animals into the wild all the time down there (dont ask how I know ;) ).
@@MrBillchair Absolutely gorgeous. I had a budgie as a kid and raised cockatiels for a few years. Would love to see them in the wild.
Hi Mate, Really glad the old bench served you well. Have a great trip and enjoy a little R & R. Cheers PB
Seeing you barefoot aboard that boat is giving me the willies! I’m still nursing a smashed finger with no nail from putting the lead in our 40 foot fishing boat, cannot imagine getting one of those ingots on the foot! Good call cabling them together. We just put them in the lazaret in a pile and they kind of stuck together.
I’ve learnt to be careful after 20 years of working without shoes.
Have a fun trip!!
Thanks Frank..
I enjoyed the 3 Beers, watching you work so hard Stu.
Legend!
You look well knackered, Stu. I hope the coastal trip is a welcome break and all goes well. I look forward to your update on Sunday.
Thanks Brian, definitely looking forward to the break.
Great music, I like this guy, Chickens. Eggs, are great, A real productive man. I think I’m going to order some DANGAR MARINE Shirts.
Love it. Have a good, safe trip.
Thank you! Will do!
you know, I've never once taken apart my drill before. Fun to see what's inside.
Four eggs is the favourite beer up here in Queensland 😜
LMFAO
Thanks for showing us all your hard work. I worry about the underside of the solar cells being exposed to heave objects. Murphy is alive and well, and someone is going to sling a tank over their shoulder and bashbone. Maybe a screen if some kind...that would let air through.
Good sailing. And thanks.
i'e been working my ass off, and now I'm watching you do the same. Why? Why oh why? Lol. Thanks fro sharing matey.
Ah, it's always good to know you aren't the only one. :)
You're setting the bar high for Brupeg, with all the projects you completed this video. ;)
I'll have to give Damien a ring this morning and rev him up. ;)
Poor Stu.. Just seem so soul-drained. We know it's been rough Stu, but we're all cheering for ya. You've got more people than the populations of many cities silently supporting you.
Maybe after the trip up to Sydney you should take a break. 2 weeks off just to relax and enjoy the incredible progress you've already made.
We'll still be here when ya get back, as excited /with you/ as ever. :)
Thanks mate, hopefully this trip will be quite restful.
@@DangarMarine just don't wanna see ya get burned out.. happens to everyone on long projects at some point. No shame in taking a breather :)
love that rainbow Lorikeet!!!!
Best of luck on your trip!
Thank you!!
well done mate starting to look good
Thanks 👍
"10 mm on this side, flat head on this one, I'll go get the tools to remove this..." Returns with Sawz-All. :D
One sawz fits all.
That's a reciprocating wrench !
i laughed so hard
Good on you Stu another great video boat starting to come together awesome little boat keep it up
Thanks 👍
Nothing better than a hard deadline to get stuff done ☺️
Have fun on your trip 😎
Thanks! 😃
Good work mate. Keep at it!
Thanks, will do!
Looking at you installing the cabin light, make sure you always have an emergency lantern of some kind. We always had a good quality, gimballed paraffin lamp in the cabin, with a pack of lighters in the nearest locker. Over about ten years it was amazing how often we used the thing, marine electrics and torch batteries being what they are.
Yep, have the oil lamp that you see on the dash and about 5 battery lights too.
Good work Dangar!
Thanks a ton
That was quite a punch list. I know you made it to Sydney, so I suppose wishing you "bon voyage" is a bit redundant. But in the spirit of a willing suspension of disbelief...Bon Voyage! Thanks for the eggspedition. Always good to see the chicks. They don't really roost in the nest boxes, do they?
Thanks mate. No, they roost on a pole above them and just get in them to lay their eggs.
Good luck, hope things goes well
Fair winds and calm seas! Wish I was “down under” so I could craft a custom table for you!!! Safe travels!!!
that boat looks like hard work
Just found your channel. I know Jack s#it about boats .but started to binge watch from No one. very addictive .I come to the conclusion you are completely insane lol you should be proud of yourself. I am up to the engine rebuild bit .stay safe
Welcome aboard!
