Having watched Kotare Chief's mighty effort the year before to smash the track record, I would never have expected that it would get beaten again just one year later.
Yes I was on the course that day and Kotare Chief was pretty much responsible for the record getting beaten plus Whetu's burst in the strait keep the pace up as well. Philip Leishman and Grant Nisbet should just stick to rugby. Keith Haub gave them the winner and he is a pretty astute cookie as far as horses go. He had a great run with McGinty didn't he.

They were never going to let Kotare Chief get away with a lead again when it was challenged by Whetu then it was all over for the Chief.
