I was there on the Roof of the Old Grandstand he payed like $38 I like Twelve Gauge we all thought he would stop but he never did!This field had about 10 top horses in it way surperior to Auckland Cup fields these days I loved it even though I lost my money

She was a freak. Just names of all of those that followed her home that day brought the fondest of memories. Broke my heart when Sangster then exported her to Ireland 🇮🇪.

This is one of my favourite Auckland Cups. He may not have been the best horse in the race but he was the best horse on the day! I think all the other senior riders were called before the stewards after the race to explain why they didn't take action sooner as he got away from them ... but who would? It wasn't as is he was dawdling along as the time proves? I was lucky enough to have thrown him in as one of my first leg of the double runners and was pretty damn confident because I had Diamond Lover and Courier Bay in the second leg.😀

If there was one horse that got me seriously hooked on horse-racing as a child, it was Grey Way. Raced from 2 years to 10, when I went from being a primary schooler to a teenager. He raced 154 times - you could follow him on tv on Saturday afternoons and support him like he was a footy team, that’s how regularly he competed. I begged gramps to take me to the ‘77 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, pegged myself on the rail at the finishline. What a race. What a gutsy horse!

A great ride on a very fit horse. I had him among others in my doubles and I was over the moon because I had Diamond Lover and Courier Bay in the second leg. I knew it was in the bag!

What a field! I can remember when this was the norm, great horses doing battle every week .... how I miss those days.

The winning jockey here passed away several days ago. RIP.

When I was 18 a trainer from Westport, Terry McManus took 2 horses to Trentham. While I was there I got to gallop Grey Way before he raced in the North Island Challenge Stakes. I eventually got to ride in Melbourne for some top trainers. John Hawkes, the Snowdens, Geoff Murphy, Robert Smerdon just to name a few. I retired at 58 and although I rode many great horses, the day I got to ride the mighty Grey Way will always remain my greatest ride ever.

Would have been interesting matchup between La Mer and Winx in their primes

I remember listening to this race on the radio that day and La Mer was giving away about 7 kilos in weight to the runner-up, the ex kiwi Taksan, who would later that spring win the Caulfield Cup.

One of the best weight for age fields assembled back in the day and La Mer showed just what an outstanding horse she was, to have defeated those top horses so easily.

Tiny filly with a huge heart seen her run in te rapa in the lion brown sprint she ran third fresh up beating bonecrusher the horses on display that day was stunning, man we had some good horseblood back then she had a chest like arnold schwarzenegger with a tiny frame and skinny legs she was a impressive looking filly I cried when she won the Canterbury guineas with a broken fetlock I salute u tidal light one of my hero's.

I'D have loved to have seen her race against Winx from 7 furlongs to 16 because she'd have been hosed down by the x this horse finished🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
